Yoga pavilion

  • The Lodge offers daily morning and evening yoga classes in an 80-square-meter, semi-open pavilion made of recycled wood.

Fitness area

The fitness area is not a common gym with just weights. It focuses on balance and core training and use elements from functional, cross fit and TRX. You will find various balance boards, slack-lines, swiss and bosu balls.

Palm tree garden

  • Relax on a sun lounger in the beautiful garden, lined by colorful flowers and majestic palm trees, giving you a tropical sensation.

Common kitchen

  • A fully equipped, shared kitchen is at your disposal.

Yoga session

In the evening, 1-hour yoga sessions focus on restoring your energy by relaxing your muscles and calming your mind after an action packed day. Private yoga sessions takes your yoga to that next level, or if you want to learn about certain exercises to improve your surfing / climbing / mountain biking, a private one-on-one 1 hour yoga lesson is the solution.

Mountain biking session

Get the most out of your trip, and use the local knowledge of our guides, to one of Europe's most exciting and diverse regions to explore by mountain bike. The tours will lead you along the rough Atlantic coast with its steep cliffs and into the heart of the Serra de Sintra, with its dense and varied fauna, deep valleys and high mountains, breathtaking views guaranteed. The tours include single and double tracks and dirt roads.

The Lodge

The Lodge is the only place in Europe where you are in a 50 kilometer radius of 129 kilometers of stunning coastlines, 64 surf spots, 376 kilometers bike path, 40 climbing spots, a 100-square-foot yoga and fitness area, spa and countless other sports facilities await. It is located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, one of Europe's most diverse and enchanting regions.

Sintra

15 minutes inland from The Lodge lies Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This historic town has been a summer residence for the Portuguese Royal families from the 14th to the 20th century and thus there are several impressive royal buildings to visit. Dominating the city's center, you find the Palacio Nacional, with its two famous conic chimneys. On top of the Monte de Pena, you can see the fantastic 19th century Palacio da Pena from as far away as Lisbon. Surrounded by a beautiful and exotic garden, this combination of Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic and Neo-Renaissance architecture is a must-see and the view of the surrounding area will blow you away.

The remains of the Castelo dos Mouros, the Castle of the Moors, date back to the 8th century, the period of Arab occupation of the Iberian peninsula. Nowadays, the ruins of the castle invite the visitor to get lost in time and enjoy the majestic view from its ancient walls. Brightly illuminated at night it still seems to protect the city of Sintra.

Further sites not to be missed include the Palacio da Regaleira estate, a romantic palace and chapel surrounded by four hectares of park, featuring fountains, lakes, grottoes and wells and declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, or the Palacio de Monserrate with its laid back park, where you find one of the richest botanical gardens in Portugal.

Good choice for the breakfast, simple, testy & always fresh. You have the option to cook at the kitchen available for all guests 24 hours, very convenient! Yoga teacher is professional & attentive to each person in the class. Her classes has perfect combination of meditation, pranayama & asana's. Thank you very much to Ralph who built such great place!"

"I've had a great time at the lodge!"

"The rooms are perfect! They have everything you need. The breakfast buffet is varied and the common kitchen enables visitors to prepare meals. The place looks very neat and taken care of with beautiful looking gardens. They basically thought of everything! The atmosphere at the Logde is really nice. Many people came alone (as I did) and everyone is in for a chat."

"Then there was the great staff!!! They are there for you if you need anything. They are open en friendly and make you feel at home."

"Last but not least, the Yoga was amazing! Madeleine is a great and inspiring yoga teacher. I would definitely recommend any yogi that wants to deepen their practice to go there and take as much classes of Madeleina as you can! :)"

"I stayed in the mini suite with my partner and couldn't have had a better time. We booked an extra night immediately (we were lucky there was the availability). The photos don't do the Lodge justice, it is a stunning place with great facilities (pool, gym, spa, sauna, all set in the pristine garden). The staff are amazing, the food at breakfast is super fresh and delicious. Although I was there with my partner, The Lodge is perfect for families and friend groups. You won't be disappointed."

"If you have teenage children you'll know how impossible it is to find a holiday to please the whole family. So this was perfect for us. Both teenagers wanted wi-fi. Tick. One wanted a pool and local beaches - tick. The other wanted activities like surfing and rock climbing - tick. My wife and me like yoga - tick. And we all like visiting places like the Pena Palace in Sintra. I could go on but you've got the picture. Oh and the staff are lovely - kind, thoughtful and very helpful. Great mixture of hotel and self catering as well. Please don't share this with too many people - we want to go again."

"Two parents - one child - five days. Easy and accurate booking, pick up and drop off from Sintra and everything as promised. Mother did yoga and meditation every morning and evening. Beautiful friendly teachers! Catering to both experienced and beginner yoga practitioners. The rest of the family joined the last day and wished they could continue. Surfing lessons every day for father and son, with skilled instructor. We did several days of sightseeing in beautiful Sintra with surrounding hills and castles. Easy to get there, about 20 min trip by bus. Met several interesting, friendly, fellow travellers and Ralph and his crew were perfect hosts. Beautiful, clean rooms, great healthy breakfast and make-your-own-lunch. We made friends, went biking to the store, walked to the beach, chilled in the hammock, swam in the pool, went horseback riding, played football, had both self-made dinner and takeaway pizza at home as well as several good restaurant dinners. Highly recommended! Wish we could go back soon."

"I had a lovely stay at Starpine Lodge. The accommodation was great amazing and it was lovely to stay in such a new, clean, homely environment. The staff at Starpine Lodge were also very friendly and helpful, young and vibrant and clearly enjoying their work at The Lodge and Starpine Lodge. The barbecue they cooked for us was great and the breakfasts, although basic were very tasty and fresh every day."

"I attended for a 'yoga retreat' although sadly the yoga side was a big let down. I would question whether the yoga 'teacher' actually had any qualification in training. I have practiced various types of yoga for over 15 years and this lady was veering on the side of dangerous with the practice she led. There was no physical warm up prior to her encouraging us into some a few very strenuous positions, and no structure to the classes. She spent approximately 30 minutes of each class talking about nothing in particular which wasted time from the actual yoga. I understand about the meditation side of yoga and have attended meditation classes, but this was not even meditation, it was clearly ego-focused chat that had no benefit to those attending the class. When asked what style of yoga she was teaching she told another participant she preferred 'Freestyle' yoga. This is all very worrying given the lack of understanding she had for the physical dangers of yoga and also the ego centered time wasting in her classes."

"I had a lovely time in terms of the relaxation, food and accommodation, but this wasn't a yoga retreat, in my opinion, as she wasn't practicing yoga. "

    "Organizer Response:"

"Thank you for sharing your opinion. I am glad to hear that your stay itself at our new venue, Star Pine Lodge was pleasant and the staff great. I am sorry to hear that the yoga did not live up to your expectations. I know that sometimes people have trouble to adjust to one of our teachers spiritual approach to yoga. The general feedback about her classes are very positive, and I can assure you that she has been practicing yoga for 15 years and taken various courses as yoga instructor along her “yoga journey”. One fundamental misunderstanding is about her style of yoga: it is called "Yoga Livre“, originated in Brazil and does not have a proper English translation, which could be "Free Yoga“ or “Freestyle Yoga“. But that does not mean that it is a random combination of yoga elements without any concept. Yoga Livre teaches you to accept yourself and enjoy the beauty of life no matter what the circumstances (in a very short summary). The teacher in question is the least ego-centered person I have ever met. I think she was simply trying to explain this approach to life. I have given these explanations as I felt I had to clarify a few things. In your review, you mentioned that our very rich breakfast buffet is "basic" but we do offer such a variety of products, all fresh and regional. And almost every guest leaves a very positive comment during their stay. Sunny regards, Ralph (Manager)"

"The Lodge is a fantastic place to stay. Ralph and his team were great. The stable rooms are spotlessly clean and have great beds. The rooms look out onto the beautiful gardens with hammocks to relax in. I was doing yoga at The Lodge which I really enjoyed. The studio is nicely positioned and the teaching was good. Breakfast was excellent and the shared kitchen was well organised and perfectly clean. The honesty bar enables you to grab a beer at the end of the day. Colares has it's own micro climate so can be misty and chilly at times so warm clothes are needed even in August when I stayed. The cooler evenings mean that one sleeps well. The Lodge is a peaceful place to stay, the other guests were made up of singles, couples and families and this made a nice atmosphere. I hope to return soon."

"The place is beautiful. Staff is very available and everything is well organized. My daughter discovered yoga and was completely seduced, the teacher had a real personality and was very soft, open mind and kind. The same for surf, the team seemed to have one purpose: " to help you to get the best experience in your surf live!"

"Near the swimming pool every body is quiet and you can read and rest. 5 days very zen and athletic!"

"Small bad point, the room street side are very noisy during the night. Two times, we were awake by music and firecrackers at 4 a.m. and by people talking loudly at 1 a.m."

"I really enjoyed my stay at The Lodge! The staff is extremly friendly, always there to help out in any way. Great service! They have bags and bikes for free to drive to the supermarket, which is a 15 minutes bike ride. I stayed in the pool-house and it is a nice house, fully equipped. The lodge itself is beautiful, with a nice garden, outside dining area, bbq, and I enjoyed the yoga. Tip:If you go there, its good to know that the weather, in this particulair area is often cold, because of the mountain, so bring warm clothes. "

  • Review by The Lodge Portugal in response to the review sent by a Traveller

"Thank you for your positive feedback about Star Pine Lodge and the staff working there. I usually don´t respond to (negative) critics, as we value our guests opinions and try to learn and improve from it. But in this case your comment is extremely negative, and personal, so i would like to say a thing or two to it. First of all, the critics about my person came a bit as a surprise, as I don´t recall any negative encounter with you or your friends. As i manage The Lodge, and not Star Pine Lodge, we actually didn´t meet that often. For somebody to leave such a negative review I would have expected to have had a serious argument or discussion with you. None of that happened. Second of all, I went through our email communication again. I cannot find any unprofessional or unfriendly behaviour from my side. On the contrary, I responded friendly and patiently to the inumerous turns and twists your booking procedure involved, as you and your friends couldn´t decide on dates and packages, even though I had informed you that we were talking about very last availabilities at The Lodge, where ou wanted to stay in first place. By the time you took a decision (diffferent arrival and departure dates for all 3 of you, no problem from my side), The Lodge was fully booked, and I recommended our new property Star Pine Lodge, in the vicinity of The Lodge. You finally booked into Star Pine Lodge, thanking me in several emails for my patience and recommendations, and not showing any sign of irritation or frustration. I´ll just post an answer you sent about a week after the booking to the manager of BookYogaRetreats, where you found us:"

"Hello Maya, Everything is settled already. Ralph (CCed) was of great help. "

"That doesn´t sound like there were any problems, does it? :) Till this point I have no idea where your rather harsh critics of my person and professional behaviour come from. Well, till the moment I asked you how and when you will get to us, in the normal reminder i send out to all our guests about a week before arrival. There you even thanked me for the helpful travel description I had sent you again. You then said that you and one of your friends would arrive at Lisbon airport at 18:00, wait for the luggage, go into Lisbon centre, have dinner and some drinks, and then get to Sintra by train to be picked up by us around midnight. I guess the turning point of our „relation“ was when I explained politely that we are happy to pick up guests at early or late hours if their flights make it necessary, but that we do not wait all night for somebody to have a nice evening out. In the end a pick up around midnight including driving and check in keeps us up till about 1:00. We are fully aware that we work in a service industry and my team and me are working hard to give everybody the best possible time, but there are limits to everything, and RESPECT is a mutual thing. You might also consider how much you jeopardize a new small business like Star Pine Lodge and the jobs of the people working there (which you liked) by publishing such a negative review about my person, who you hardly met. Just wanted to share my point of view. Sunny regards, Ralph"

"Let’s start with the small negative part from our, beside that, awesome and really good feedback. Before I go any further I would like to stress that the negative feedback is only related to one person there, who is the manager. All other staff is more than friendly, helpful and cheerful – everything you can ask for. The E-Mail communication with the manager of Starpine up front was in our opinion unprofessional and unfriendly, when it comes to communication in the tourist sector. Also as we met the manager in person, he was reserved, snooty and gave us an unfriendly and unwelcome feeling. Now coming to the major part, the very good feedback part: We (3 females between the ages of 30-34) stayed for one week in Starpine Lodge in June 2016. Overall we had a great time in the lodge which includes accommodation, breakfast and the individual and really friendly service of the staff. We stayed in a separate bungalow in a four bed room which had enough space for the three of us. We liked the interior design which was dominated by self-made wooden furniture which put a really nice tough to the room (compliments to the carpenter). The bath was small but very clean and had everything we needed. Coming to the breakfast, it was a breakfast buffet in the main house, which we liked as we got in touch with other guests at the long breakfast table. The breakfast varied slightly every day which was a nice twist and had nearly everything you would also get in a Hotel with continental breakfast (besides scrambled eggs, grilled bacon). The beach is 10 minutes by foot. The sport activities we did was biking, climbing, bouldering, yoga and horse riding. Each experience was great. The yoga classes were okay, but we were not overwhelmed. Overall we had a great time."

"We really enjoyed our stay, a lovely setting with a very friendly group of guests. The staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Our room was very clean with a good outlook over the garden. The breakfasts were delicious. The yoga was challenging, we were pleased we improved over the week. The teacher was extremely warm and encouraging. We would have liked to have the evening meal included as it would have given us more opportunity to speak to the other guests. The BBQ evening was very enjoyable. We would recommend the lodge to anyone who would like a yoga holiday near lovely beaches and the wonderful historic town of Sintra"

"The Lodge is a little hidden peace sanctuary 10 minutes from a magnificent beach with few excellent restaurants but still free from the usual "junk places" traditionally associated with crowded, touristy beaches. The place was fully booked when we were there but it truly didn't feel that way, remaining calm and quiet throughout and we barely saw anyone other than for breakfast and yoga classes! The staff were very accommodating and friendly and the facilities were everything we could have wished for. The rustic look of the stable conversion was just perfectly charming yet practical and very comfortable. The surf school they use was also very good. It's not a good place if you're looking for a city break of hard partying but if you're after a calm, relaxing reboot then that's your place. I'm not one to go back to the same place twice but I may just have to make this a yearly trip! "

"We absolutely loved our stay at The Lodge. It was the perfect holiday and even better than we had hoped for. In the run up to our stay at The Lodge communication with Ralph was very easy and informative, he got back to me quickly and answered all of my questions. We were met by the lovely Cindy at Sintra station who drove us to The Lodge and gave us a full run through of all the information we needed. So by the time we got there we were already very happy and were even more delighted when we saw The Lodge itself which was much more beautiful than on the website!!! The website doesn’t do it justice!!! It had a lovely garden, swimming pool and yoga studio and our rooms were very clean and stylish and the staff were wonderful. They had thought of everything to make your stay comfortable – there were bikes you can borrow, an honesty fridge, well equipped kitchen and BBQ, bus timetables, maps, you name it - There was even a bottle of wine, two glasses and a corkscrew left in our room on arrival which was such a lovely touch. We were there for yoga and surfing and we were very satisfied with the service. Very friendly yoga and surf teachers and a very nice vibe in all the classes. Thank you so much Ralph, Cindy and the team. Your mixture of chilled, friendly, efficiency is really a winning combination and you made our stay so relaxing and comfortable. We are already thinking about when we will return!! Till next time…"

"Amazing place for surf and yoga holiday and relaxation. I expected something more of a hostel, but it turned out to be a great villa with nice rooms, common area with a dining table, nice garden with the swimming pool. The staff is extremely helpful and nice. The surfing sessions were intense, and I really enjoyed the session. Surf Instruction was of superb quality. I don't think I'll ever be a pro at surfing, but I have definitely found my new hobby. The yoga teacher and the yoga classes were amazing with an emphasis to meditation and pranayama. The area is rather quiet, but there are still several restaurants around, with tasty food and great wine."

"I had the pleasure of staying at The Lodge for 8 days at the beginning of April. First of all, the staff are very very nice and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable, guide you where to go and are always available to answer your questions. The place itself is very comfortable and you can see the love the staff put into making it welcoming, cozy and beautiful. The food was great - succulent and healthy breakfasts and thought they didn’t have to, they encourage you to make a sandwich to take away for lunch. As for the yoga, I would say it is not a yoga specialized lodge. One of the three teachers was very good - Masha knew what she was doing! Unfortunately, the other two were not as qualified and the language barrier made it hard to understand the practice - postures often didn’t flow and they looked improvised, often leaving the students lost to the point where we just did our own thing. All in all, this is a great place, perhaps more suitable for beginner yoga students or surf enthusiasts"

"I have just returned from a very nice few days at the Lodge, on the 4 night full yoga package. It was easy to get there from Lisbon airport by metro and train and easy to get around the area by bus during my stay. It was my first time going there and I found it to be a very relaxing, low key place to stay. The accommodation is simple but clean and comfortable. The kitchen facilities are also good if you want to cook. The breakfast buffet was varied and plentiful and the packed lunch a great idea. It was also nice to have fresh fruit and tea available in this area all day. I liked the honesty fridge (containing chocolate, soft drinks, water and beer) which saves having to carry these heavy items back by bus/ walking. I was traveling on my own and found that there were many solo travelers there, all friendly so there was company for day trips and dinner if desired. There are shops, restaurants and beaches within easy walking distance and all the food I ate in the restaurants was very good and very reasonable. (mostly fish). The yoga teacher Maddelena was very good. The yoga was challenging at times but varied and covered all aspects of yoga practice. I enjoyed my time at the Lodge and was sorry I wasn't staying for a full week. I would go there again. "

"Stayed here for a week and had a wonderful time surfing and doing yoga. Easy to get to from Lisbon and the staff there made me feel at home instantly. Everything was clean and comfortable - really high standard. Although I was alone, it was easy to meet people and the group BBQ was a lot of fun. The supermarket was a bit of a trek (especially for city folk like me used to having shops 5 minutes away!) but the surrounding walks are beautiful so not a huge problem. A wonderful place."

"Only got to stay for a week, but would definitely like to go back. Both Ralph and his staff are great and he did a great job renovating the horse stables into comfortable rooms. I felt right at home. We had dinner at a really nice restaurant close by and a barbecue at the lodge with the whole group, which is not mandatory of course, but really added to the great feel of the week. I had a rental car which I found really useful. Both for getting groceries if your want to cook your own dinner and getting around to Cascais, Sintra, Lissabon, and Costa da Caparica. But you can also get around with public transport or one of bikes they have at the lodge. The free yoga style was something I had to get used to, but our teacher Madalena was very sweet and intuitive and she gave good massages. Really worth the money. Also the other guests were a true joy. I didn't go surfing or climbing, but heard great stories about it from the other guests. Good teachers and good vibes all around. Until next time!"

"What a wonderful place - great location, staff, amenities and activities. Ralph and his friendly team have put together a fantastic facility which offers a wide range of options for their guests. If you want to partake in the activities on offer (surfing, yoga, bike riding ) or simply enjoy a relaxing time out in one of Europe's premier locales, then this is well worth a visit. I'll definitely be back!"

"Stayed at The Lodge, it's beautiful, clean and very comfortable. Great for relaxing and having a peaceful time. Staff is really nice and friendly and you feel like home!Rooms are beautifully decorated and beds are very comfy, It could do better with one more pillow. The only slightly downside of it is the fact there isn't any supermarket close to The lodge and you better of having a car to go around at least I prefer it this way but overall experience is really good. I had a good time :)"

"Normally I am too lazy to write reviews, but I had a really, really good time at The Lodge, so this one is well-deserved. The staff was super friendly and made us feel at home right away. They organized barbecues and a restaurant trip together. Ralph was really accomodating organizing climbing trips, mountain biking, surfing for us from one day to another; everything was very uncomplicated and flexible. We could get the mountain bikes last minute for grocery shopping, Jacuzzi and sauna times and even doing archery. The location is amazing, the lodge itself beautifully equipped and the surrounding with the mountains and the sea, and Sintra and Lisbon being close by was perfect for us. We had an optimal mixture of relaxing, sports, food and culture and will make sure to come back some time!"

"Imagine a place where German super-efficiency meets laid-back surf cool. Sounds unlikely, but Ralph and company have achieved the near-impossible. The result is wonderful - a place where groups of friends, families, solo surf bums and yoga freaks from all over will feel equally at home. The owner-managers have gone out of their way to think of everything, so that you don't have to - to the point of physically signposting two different routes to the beach. There are board games, garden games, an honesty fridge stocked full of beers, and nothing is too much trouble for the always friendly staff. The entire place is new, super clean and beautifully finished with a real creative touch. It's also a great location for exploring the Sintra and Lisbon areas. Thanks for a fabulous week from the 5 English girls."

"The Lodge is located in a quiet area outside Colares village very close to the beach, around 2 minutes by car. Lovely large garden with pool, sauna, jacuzzi, and hammocks. Guestrooms are located in perfectly renovated and refurbished former horse stables. Rooms are beautiful, but not big, with private bathroom and private terrace viewing into the nice garden. Good bed, great sleep comfort, quiet. A tranquil place and perfect to relaxing. Further, different sport activities such as yoga, surfing and archery are offered. Very good breakfast buffet including different yoghurts, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, good cheese and ham, different bread types and pastry in dining room and outside on the big terrace. Possibility to prepare lunch packs with breakfast items. A common guest kitchen fully equipped is available. Additionally to the beaches, Sintra and surroundings can be easily explored from Colares by private car. The Lodge is a very charming and peaceful B&B and has a great location."
