Tattwa Shuddhi Yoga Retreat in India

  • Shuddhi literally means purification and Tattva is element, referring to the five elements. In western culture there are four elements and in eastern traditions there are five. The fifth being ether or the space between spaces, in more modern parlance what is being referred to is the space between spaces by most traditions. As this is quite quaint, it is really incorrect. The zero point energy field as postulated in quantum theory is really what ether is described as. In the science of Tantra, the science of inner experience has been adhering to illumination as true reality beyond the atomic and sub-atomic perception is the realm of Brahma or Atman, which is illumination.

    The thrust of the Tattwa Shuddhi practice is to purify the subtle elements of the mind rooted in the physical body and prepare the way for the experience of illumination in the tradition of Sanatanadharma (eternal culture or religion). The nature of the course is intensive but it is not a deterrent for beginners. All who are any spiritual-religious faith and of any yoga tradition are welcomed to join. The main requirement is an open mind and the 'readiness' to learn well past our cultural and social limitations.

    The course is broken into two sections - week one is an intensive study and test of the material and week two is the actual practice of Tattva Shuddhi. What SWAN wish to do is to ground the aspirant in the practical experience of yogic traditions and rituals well past the design of other retreat centers. Realizing that this type of intensity is nearly impossible in the modern world full of distractions, SWAN Yoga Retreat offers to bring you the idyllic setting in which to do this traditional Tantric Sadhana. Strict discipline must be voluntarily maintained through the course. During the period of the Mantra Sadhana course isolation within the boundaries of Swan Retreat Center is recommended for the entire period.

    Schedule for Tattwa Shuddhi

    Day 1

    • Arrival (you are expected to be at the Swan Yoga Retreat Center after lunch)
    • Evening gathering in the yoga shala or temple
    • Introduction with each other student and teacher explanation about the days to come
    • Hawan (fire ceremony to invoke blessings for the successful course)
    • Dinner and lights off

    Day 2

    • 06:00 to 06:45 - Morning meditation
    • 07:00 - Shatkarmas (yogic cleansing practices) neti, kunjal, shankahaprakshalana. There will be no asana this day.
    • 12:00 - Yoga Nidra
    • Evening lecture and evening puja/hawan.
    • Mantra chanting initiation (They will provide the people the mantras which will be used throughout the course. In this case, it will be Gayatri and Mahamritunjaya).
    • Dinner
    • Kirtan (if singers can be arranged)
    • Lights off

    Day 3 to Day 12

    • 06:00 to 06:45 - Havan (sacred fire ritual)
    • 06:45 to 07:15 - Tattwa Shuddhi meditation
    • 07:15 to 07:25 - Tea break
    • 07:30 to 09:00 - Asana and pranayama
    • 10:00 to 11:00 - Brunch
    • 11:30 to 12:30 - Yoga Nidra with Tattwa visualization
    • 12:30 to 14:00 - Practice lecture
    • 14:30 to 16:30 - Karma yoga
    • 17:00 to 17:30 - Sandhya Vandanam
    • 18:00 to 19:00 - Dinner

    Day 13

    • Morning Hawan and Puja
    • Meditation
    • No asana and pranayama
    • Interactive session with all the participants about their experiences
    • Evening Manasika Puja and culmination of the course

    Day 14

    • Brunch
    • Departure of guests

    Practice includes Shatkarmas, Trataka on Tattwa symbols, worship of elements, sacred purifying fire rituals.

    • Shivendra

      Yoga became a life-understating tool for Shivendra. The leaning about life and sharing the experience with like minded people is still on for him for the past 12 years. He is also doing multi-tasking and taking care of communication and administration besides delivering lectures and conducting work-shops as and when time permits.

    • Gyanmitra Saraswati

      Gyanmitra has a Bachelor’s degree in Yogic Sciences, and has been involved in learning and teaching yoga for the past fifteen years, conducting programmes and workshops in Europe and the Middle East

    • Dayamurti

      Dayamurti is the guiding force behind the asana and pranayama part of classical Hatha yoga being taught at SWAN. She is a disciple of Swami Niranajanananda Saraswati of Bihar School of Yoga. She is very dedicated towards her teaching and her simplicity and spiritual living is quite enriching for the guest staying at Swan.

      At SWAN Yoga Retreat Goa, Omtirth is responsible for the Tantric and Vedic rituals conducted here on a regular basis besides teaching and conducting the special yoga retreats organised from time to time. His simple yet very passionate way of talking is loved by one and all. A lot can be said about him, but to make it short: he is OM.

      Dimple firmly believes that the body is the best teacher and always let the breath lead the movement. Dimple found yoga at a difficult time of her life and willingly or not has been having a torrid love affair with it since. “Amateur face off with Yoga” is her motto which she experienced herself a decade back.

    SWAN Yoga Retreat is located in an orchid land with trees of cashew, banana, papaya, coconut, mango, teak and various other wild varieties surrounding it. The retreat center is in the village of Assagao one of the quite and picturesque villages of north Goa. The surroundings are forestland, which attracts a lot of bird life, the only "noise" you hear is the sound of the birds. Tucked in nature away from the normal "tourist" places of Goa is the beach. Yet not so far away, the nearest beach being Anjuna and Vagatore are just 15 minutes away on a motorbike.

    Arrival by airplane

    To get to SWAN Yoga Goa you will need to fly into Goa Dabolim airport, which serves international charter and domestic flights. If you are booking online the airport code to Goa is GOI.

    You could fly a scheduled airline to any gateway city such as Mumbai, New Delhi, or Bangalore and change to a domestic airline for the journey to Goa Dabolim, which is a 1-hour flight from Mumbai and 2.5 hours from New Delhi and Bangalore. Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines fly from Heathrow and have excellent connections to Goa in India.

    Arrival by taxi

    If you are already in Goa and making your own way to SWAN Yoga Goa by taxi you will need to tell the driver that they are on the small road down from Mapusa at the DMC College, towards Badem. The yoga retreat is on the first right road immediately after the bus shelter, after you have turned right follow the sign "SWAN Yoga" and we are located in the end of the road, behind the Ganga Tiles Factory.
