A 300-hour yoga teacher training is all about training yourself not about teaching others only. The self-practice and development of your skills and awareness are most essential. It is not only about physical postures (asanas), it is about the management of your mind, making it still and quiet.
“Sthiram sukham asanam” is how sage Patanjali describes the yoga asanas. Does it mean that asana is that in which one is sthira and sukhi, or does it mean that sthirata and sukha are outcomes of practicing asana? Sthiram and sukham, stability and comfort, are the outcome of asana practice. Once attained this outcome the posture too will become still and comfortable to hold.
Are you able to sit at least for five minutes without moving? Stillness does not come naturally, for stillness is not the nature of the senses. The body and mind are ruled by the senses and therefore making it very challenging to become still. Many distractions and challenges are caused by the senses.
Distractions and disturbances in the mind are possible to remove through the practices of yoga and to reduce the hyperactivity of the senses. Once the hyperactivity of the senses is reduced, the body enters into a state of comfort and ease. Then after all it becomes easy and comfortable to hold your asana for a longer period of time for meditation.
Patanjali is advocating only those asanas which are static and comfortable. His first sutra is Atha Yoga Anushasanam – Now, instructions on Raja yoga. This is interpreted by many people as meaning that raja yoga is a continuation of previous yoga, and that previous yoga is hatha yoga. By the time you come to Raja yoga, you have done all the physical movements that you need to do. Therefore, the focus of Raja yoga is not on the practice of asana, but on the maintenance of physical posture.
During the course, it is allowed to take food outside of the ashram, except for fruits. Each student has personal difficulties that need self-acceptance without blaming institutions. However, all teachings will be as on the mental and physical abilities of the students. All kinds of teachings of TTC will be traditional as per the Samarpan School of Yoga.
A daily notebook is essential to have, for training the mind. Writing down digitally is not allowed. All desires of the student can not be fulfilled and students must prepare to surrender to the possible challenges during the course.
