Suryalila Yoga Retreat Centre is a beautiful, old-renovated olive farm consisting of eight houses that form the cortijo. In typical Spanish style, there are two inner courtyards, one of which blooms with orange and lemon trees. The property sits on 45 acres of land and is still a working olive farm with 350 olive trees.
The houses on the property are all artfully and tastefully furnished and decorated with careful attention to detail. Every room is uniquely beautiful with impeccable feng shui. Suryalila has three yoga halls. Ganesha yoga shala has a gorgeous wooden ceiling as well as a wooden floor and is filled with light from windows on both walls as well as a skylight. It also has a lovely balcony with benches for enjoying the expansive views. Ganesha yoga shala comfortably holds 30 people.
The Om Dome has been dubbed the most magnificent yoga hall in Europe. The sacred geometry creates a cathedral-like space, which is awe-inspiring. The dome overlooks rolling hills, olive groves, and a ruined convent. Inside, the dome boasts underfloor heating and cooling and two long walls for practicing inversions. The walls have been beautifully decorated with colorful murals of Indian gods and Tibetan imagery. There is a state of the art sound system as well as atmospheric lighting.
The dome can comfortably hold 60 people practicing yoga and a lot more for concerts and other events. Both of the yoga spaces are fully outfitted with yoga props. Apart from three gorgeous yoga halls, Suryalila Retreat Centre boasts a saltwater swimming pool, eco sauna / sweat lodge, and views of the most magnificent and vibrant sunsets. On your arrival day, your room will be ready after 4 p.m. and you are welcome to arrive earlier and enjoy the facilities at Suryalila. On your departure day, Suryalila asks that you vacate your room by 10.30 a.m. After you have left your room, you are welcome to use the facilities until you are ready to leave.
Note: Here at Suryalila, the staffs have cats, peacocks, chickens, horses, and the neighbors' dogs often come onto the property so it is best to leave your pets at home. There are also hunters in the area at different times of years.
At a certain point, Catia Garcia realized that there was plenty of action and striving in her life but she felt very little rest and acceptance. She could see that this imbalance, clinging to yang and ignoring the importance of yin, was causing her to suffer. It is bringing physical discomfort and metabolic disharmony into her body. At that time, she was working as the occupational therapist in a hospital to understand the importance of balance and acceptance. It was propelled her to search deeply for more knowledge and teachings in different energetic bodywork fields. She is grateful to her teachers in this field who are Cyriac Joseph, Fabian Scarpan, Till Heeg, Jack Chaya, Rosemary Wallace, Krishnatakis, David Lutt, Sahji Sivanada, Sara Power and Thich Nhatt Hanh. They led her to look more deeply at Thai and Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Taoism, and Buddhist philosophy.
Tarthang Tulku, a Tibetan lama, said:
“in brief tranquil moments when the senses are relaxed and responsive when the heart is easy and the mind light, we can hear the voice of silent space speaking… Awareness responds, and the blessing of healing and knowledge flows forth.”
In many wisdom traditions around the world, there is an understanding of the balance between striving and acceptance. This balance allows you to be in your natural state of joy and health. Whenever the energy (known as chi, prana, lom, lung or life force) is stagnant, deficient, or excessive, the physical body is affected. Consequently, the emotional body is also affected or it might also be vice versa.
“… all emotional stress is stored physically as tension in the body. The stress of past traumatic experiences, neurotic patterns, and of day-to-day living cause physical blockages… Emotional and physical problems can block your growth as individuals in many ways. Physical and emotional health, however, creates a strong foundation for developing and unfolding on all levels of your being which are physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual.”
Michael Reed Gach with Carolyn Marco, Acu-Yoga (Tokyo and New York: Japan Publications, 1981), 17.
Many people are out of touch with what they are feeling because they are lack of time and space in their lives to explore the deeper aspects of themselves. In this weeklong retreat, Catia Garcia will offer a practice that allows the individual time for inner listening, tuning the body, and bringing harmony between the visceral (organs), emotional, and energetic layers of the body.
As traditional medicine, this retreat is opening its doors to ancient healing arts. Now, there is a great opportunity to integrate the concepts of meridians from Chinese medicine, the power of herbs from ancient Greek medicine, massage, and steam, as well as integrative breath work and holistic healing yoga born from the Taoist and Ayurvedic tradition. You will also develop body awareness and release old stored patterns using osteopathy, cranio-sacral, and biodynamic concepts. Last but not least, you will employ the mindful practice of meditation from the Buddhism.
The aim of this week is to offer a variety of tools to take back home that can facilitate the healing process. You will be given a manual where all the practices will be shared, including the Therapeutic yoga poses that you will practice each day in the retreat, the name and properties of each herb used for the herbal cleanse teas and for the hot herbal compresses, different meditations, qi-gong / tai chi exercises, etc.
Please note that on day four, there will be a cleansing day. You will only do a gentle therapeutic practice in the morning and a lying meditation. The rest of the day will be for resting and relaxing in the sauna and swimming pool. You will do a belly releasing massage and there will be a special day of cleansing food. Meanwhile, on day five, after breakfast, there will be a free day to visit some of the interesting local attractions.
