The designer decor is both soothing to the soul and delightful to the eye.

Cozy living areas and fireplaces

There is a cozy, communal living room area with couches and a library shelf. In the few cooler winter months, a log stove keeps this area toasty. There is also an upstairs mezzanine with comfortable couches next to Ganesha yoga shala.

Retreat location

The retreat will take you exploring the authentic and culturally rich area of Spain. The cities include:

Rhonda

Rhonda is famous for its spectacular views, ancient Roman bridges, and bullfighting! Ronda is just under a one-hour drive from Suryalila Retreat Centre. Similar to many towns in the region, it is a fortified white town on a hill with stunning views and cliffs that was once a center of Islamic culture. The old town is situated on the other side of a gorge, with a beautiful bridge connecting it with the newer part. Many travelers and writers have written about Ronda, most famously in the 20th century, Ernest Hemingway and Orsen Wells. Both were enamored with the culture and landscape and in particular.

Hemingway wrote about bullfighting. The ring is still used occasionally for bullfights, as well as being a site of tourist interest, with its lovely architecture. The history of Ronda can be traced back to the 9th century BCE, making it one of Spain’s oldest towns. Walking through the town and the old quarter and then taking the path into the gorge below gives one a good impression of this picturesque town.

Sevilla

Sevilla is one of Europe’s most charming and romantic cities. It is probably the most famous historical town in Andalusia, along with Cordoba and Granada. It has a stunning cathedral and Alcazar (Moorish palace). With the original minaret of a mosque incorporated into the Christian cathedral, it is one more example of the fusion of Islamic and Christian architecture in Andalusia. Sevilla’s history is woven into folklore, with Bizet’s Carmen capturing the image of a steaming, sultry city fueled by colonial passions. Columbus’ ‘discovery’ of America in 1492 led to Sevilla gaining a monopoly on Spanish trade with the new-found continent.

Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera, is about 45-minute drive from Suryalila. Its old quarter surrounds the Alcázar de Jerez, a Moorish fortress founded in the 11th century. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is a famed riding school with horse shows and a carriage museum. The city is also known for flamenco music and sherry production in the so-called Sherry Triangle lying to the west.

Arcos de la Frontera

Arcos is one of Andalusia’s most dramatically positioned pueblos Blancos (white villages), Arcos balances atop a rocky limestone ridge, its whitewashed houses and stone castle walls stopping abruptly as a sheer cliff face plunges down to the river Guadalete below. Declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1962 in recognition of its exceptional architecture and impressive location, the old town is a tangled labyrinth of cobbled streets that lead up to a sandstone castle, the Castillo de los Arcos. As you’d expect from such a spectacular vantage point, there are exhilarating views over the town and the rolling plain below.
