Driving directions from San Jose

Pavones is a 7-hour drive from San Jose. This is one of the routes to get here.

Leave San Jose on the new highway heading to Jaco. Before entering Jaco, take the coastal road south.

Travel south passing turns for Playa Hermosa, Quepos and Dominical.

In Palmar you will meet with the Pan-Am Highway, go right.

Fill up on gas/ diesel here. This is the last real gas station, unless you are going into Golfito. You can get fuel in Pavones but only from a drum at the hardware store.

Then, in Rio Claro go right again. There will be a sign for Pavones around 4 to 5 miles on the right side of the road, but be aware and pay attention.

You will need to take a hard switch back left turn at this sign. The Rodeo Bar is on this corner. If you get to Golfito you have gone too far and missed the turn - go back and watch for the Rodeo Bar.

The rest of the way will be marked with new signs and will take around 1.5 hours.

Make a right in Pueblo Nuevo.

Make another right in Conte, there is a supermarket and bar here.

You will be on the road to Pavones (45 minutes from this point).

Stay left at the two forks in the road after Conte. The other roads go to Zancudo.

Upon arrival to Pavones, you will pass the grocery store, Rio Claro Bridge and Pavones Point Break. Stay on the beach road about 6 kilometers more passing over a couple bridges and through the Pavones beach.

Look for Tiskita Jungle Lodge on the left. Casa Marea Alta is directly after them. You’ll see a sign for Casa Marea Alta.

Arrival by airplane

You are suggested arriving at Golfito Airport (GLF). Surf with Amigas will pick you up from the airport. The transfer to and from the airport are included in the price.

Arrival by bus

  • You can take the bus from San Jose to Punta Banco, Costa Rica. Although it is very inexpensive, but this bus ride can take upwards of 8.5 hours. That’s a long time on a bus. But you get to stop in some different places, eat some good food on the road, and save a few bucks.
  • From San José you can buy a ticket at the Tracopa Terminal (every taxi drivers knows where it is). If possible, we advise you to buy your ticket a day in advance, because it can get crowded, especially on the weekends and holidays.
  • Buses depart San Jose for Golfito from the Tracopa station at 7:00 a.m. The trip takes about 8 hours and costs 12 USD. Tracopa Tel: 2222-2666. Buses to Pavones depart Golfito daily at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. They depart near the supermarket across the street from the hospital. The trip lasts two and a half to three hours and costs 2.40 USD.
  • To return to San Jose, buses depart Pavones daily at 5:30 a.m and 12:30 p.m for Golfito. They depart Golfito in front of the Deposito Libre at 5:00 a.m and 1:30 p.m. The trip takes about 8 hours and costs 12 USD.
  • In case of a lack of time, you can get off the bus at T-junction kilómetro 14 (between Golfito & Pavones) and get on the Pavones bus there. Whatever you do, make sure you are on that bus, because it only goes to Casa Marea Alta once a day! Tell the driver to drop you off at Casa Marea Alta, Clyde Aspinall’s house, next to Tiskita Jungle Lodge. Plan to arrive around 6pm.
  • If by any chance you miss the last bus to Pavones, you can take a taxi from Golfito to Casa Marea Alta, which will cost you around 80 USD.

"If you are considering booking a retreat with Surf with Amigas, do it! This trip was so incredible. Every part of it. First of all, I was the least experienced with surfing and the coaches and the amazing girls I met were so helpful and encouraging! There is coaching in the water, coaching on land and videos to review after each surf to help with technique. The week was packed full of adventure, there was surf and yoga everyday, horseback rides, hiking to waterfalls, a boat ride to surf, a girls night out, chocolate making and a wildlife hike! Just incredible. All of this and there was still enough downtime to feel rested up for the next adventure. "

"I cannot forget to mention the food too because, oh my goodness, everything was so delicious! I’m now home and trying to recreate all of the meals I was lucky enough to get at this retreat. This was such a great experience all around and I know I now have lifelong friends from this trip. I will be back the first chance I get!"

"This is my second trip with Surf with Amigas and I honestly did not think a vacation could have been any better than my last trip with them in February 2016 in Costa Rica. Truly amazing in every way! The surf and yoga instructors, accommodations, food, location, Magnific Rock staff, zip lining, volunteering for an afternoon with a 15 kids from the local area and all the new friends you meet and bond with are hands down an epic adventure that I promise you will never forget! You will not find a better surf and yoga retreat in my opinion. I love the outdoors and adventure without crowds mixed in with a spectacular places that not many people know about or have seen. I am extremely lucky to have found this retreat and plan doing another one in Panama next year!"

"I have been on all types of trips but this one has stabbed its place at the top easily. I went alone and immediately felt the great energy and friendliness of the surf instructors. They are there to make sure you improve your surf experience but also to have fun at the same time. Even though it was only a week, the closeness you felt with the instructors was very strong so it was hard to leave them. Yes, it was a kind of experience that will never make you feel alone or bored."

"I went on a Costa Rica retreat and had previously done a Nicaragua retreat. The surf was a lot of fun. The instructors were fun and insured we caught a lot of waves. The water is super warm. The instructors were very laid back in that you didn't have to surf. I actually went on a bike ride and explored the area one day. The horseback riding was phenomenal. It was a jungle tour and then running on the beach. The staff were very nice. The accommodations were what to be expected. We were in a dorm type room and shared with 4 other women. It was right in front of the beach so I could hear the waves crashing at night."

"I did two Surf with Amigas retreats in 2015, both in Nicaragua. They were both fantastic. The instructors work very hard to make sure you learn, feel safe, and push yourself to the limit you are comfortable with. The food is also authentic and delicious. There is a reason everyone is obsessed with second breakfast-my favorite meal of the day!"
