Villa Mandala, the perfect yoga and surf escape, is located on Banana beach. Mandala is the best accommodation we offer and is our dedicated Yoga Centre where we run Yoga Surf Retreats year round. With large terraces and a pool looking over Banana Point, Villa Mandala incorporates privacy and soulful individuality.

The area immediately surrounding Villa Mandala is not a tropical paradise but the sea views are beautiful and great beaches are in walking distance. It is a distinctly North African beachside location that is susceptible to the constant natural and man made changes that rapidly occur in the developing world. It's part of the experience and it's what makes Villa Mandala a true gem hidden off the beaten track and Banana Village's best kept secret!

The Yoga shala

Our rooftop wooden yoga shala boasts ocean views stretching more than 180 degrees in front and the foothills of the Atlas mountains behind. It measures 6m by 11m, with wooden flooring and surround glass sliding doors its a naturally light and airy space. Blessed with the first magical light each sunrise and the last rays at each colourful African sunset it is a perfect haven for a deep and unforgettable yoga and meditation practice.

There are several accommodation types in Villa Mandala. The package given on the prices are for certain room types only. Please contact Surf Maroc for the prices of the other accommodation options.

Turtle room (en-suite double or twin room)

  • The Turtle room is on the ground floor of Villa Mandala. It is spacious, well appointed and has its own bathroom.

Bougainvillea room (twin or double room, shared bathroom)

  • The Bougainvillea room is named after the flowers that grow abundantly in the garden below. It is a peaceful room and shares a bathroom with the Indian room.

Indian room (twin or double with a shared bathroom)

  • A Mandala style Indian themed room with hanging lights and decorated with trinkets. The bathroom is shared with the Bougainvillea room.

Butterfly room (en-suite double or twin room)

  • This Butterfly themed room is quiet and calm. It is well proportioned and has its own bathroom.

Light room (sea view en suite double or twin room)

The light room is cool, characterful and stylish with its white finish and dashes of colour. The big windows give epic ocean views and you can watch the perfect sunset from your pillow.

Emerald room (sea view en-suite double or twin room)

The Emerald room is in the middle of the villa with views over the pool and the Atlantic Ocean. The en-suite Emerald Room has a wholesome feel to help you recharge on your holiday.

Scarlet Room (sea view en suite double or twin room)

Rich in colour, the Scarlet Room has a sumptuous sea view. One wall is made entirely of glass, the wild Atlantic ocean goes as far as the eye can see and with an en-suite bathroom the Scarlet Room is a unique treat.

Red room (spacious en-suite sea view double, twin or triple room)

This master en-suite bedroom is the largest of Mandala's rooms yet the red interiors create an authentically Moroccan and homely feel. It looks out onto Banana beach, Banana point and the lefts of Onze and Douze.

Garden room (spacious sea view en-suite double, twin or triple room)

The stunning Garden room is the ideal place for a calm, inspiring and restorative holiday at Mandala. It's big open windows make it light and airy. The organically decorated bathroom has an open, walk-in shower with pebble flooring from the beach and with the bougainvillea blossoming up to the window from the garden below, it's one of our favourite rooms.

Surf Maroc is located in the Agadir region of southern Morocco. Taghazout is a unique gem on Moroccos Atlantic coast. Conveniently located 40 min from Agadir international airport its a short hop ( 2-4 hrs) from most central European cities. Its the closest place for any European surfer to get year round warm water, perfect waves and a unique cultural experience.

There are an abundance of restaurants and cafes in Taghazout, including our own ocean front Auberge restaurant and Mouja Cafe. There are plenty of grocery shops selling fruit, vegetable and other essentials. There is a well-stocked pharmacy and four surf shops. There are also lots of internet cafes with ADSL connection.

There are a few surf shops in Taghazout. They now stock a fair bit of hardware: leashes, wax, deckgrip etc. The surf board and clothing selection is also growing. Most of the shops offer board repairs, they are often great value and of good quality.

The yoga

Yoga Surf Retreats with Surf Maroc offer an excellent detailed introduction to all aspects of yoga for beginners and the chance to dive deep into an enriched intermediate or advanced practice. The week is progressive, studying specific sections of the body anatomically and in relation to each chakra. Each class is carefully crafted by the expert teachers, Tara and Kimberly, to strengthen, stretch, inspire and relax each student on all levels of their being. The morning classes are 90 120 minutes of creative invigorating Vinyasa flow. When the morning classes are 90 minutes, there is an optional 30 minute workshop, posture clinic or further practice at 9.00 a.m. each morning.

Each session includes time for meditation, pranayam, reflection, visualisation, and relaxation. Tara offers optional informative afternoon discussions on yoga philosophy. Evening classes are deep yin style or restorative practice to rebalance the body and mind after a day in the surf. Although nothing is obligatory and every guest may do as much or as little as they wish, we offer the chance to practice at least 4 hours of inspiring yoga every day

We have many years of experience teaching yoga to surfers and you will be amazed how much the yoga practice helps you in the surf. For beginners and experienced surfers yoga is an essential practice in developing the mental and physical strength required to surf and keep surfing. Its a sublime combination.

Our surf coaches provide safe, fun, rewarding surf lessons every day of the retreat. Morocco's year round good climate and consistent small to medium sized clean, easy waves mean that it's the perfect place to learn and progress. Our coaches' friendly, dedicated approach will ensure that your progression over the course of the week is beyond what you ever thought possible.

This region is of course a paradise for experienced surfers with every type of point, reef and beach break available. Higher level surfers on the retreat can join our surf camp groups to surf more challenging waves if they wish.

Level 1

You have never surfed before. Designed as an introduction to surfing, the week will be focused on giving you all you need to know to get going. We'll start on the beach and then move to waist deep water working on board handling and safety, reading ocean conditions, paddling, catching broken waves in the prone position. You'll be up and riding in no time!

Level 2

You have surfed before, know the basics and are practising getting up in the whitewater. The course will focus on increasing confidence in the waves in order to progress to an efficient stance and increase your wave count. Key points will be paddling into waves and catching waves un-assisted, accelerating your board and the all important pop up.

Level 3

You are outback progressing to green waves, standing up and turning. The level 3 sessions focus on solidifying the levels 1 and 2 with a view to you progressing beyond the white water. Youll learn about the paddle out and the techniques to make it easier, board control, quicker take offs, weight distribution. Focus is on wave selection and catching and riding those elusive green waves.

Seasonal information

Morocco is an all year round destination for great surf and great weather. Surf Maroc is open all year. The summer months (April - October) see small to medium swells with surf mostly on the beaches and reefs on the more exposed north west coast. This is a great time for anyone looking for fun, uncrowded warm water surf. There are some bigger days during this time for those looking for something more challenging.

During the winter months the waves, that have made Morocco famous, come to life. There is a huge variety of surf in this area of Morocco. There are not many places like it in the world. The region has something for everyone, from ideal beginner waves to challenging reef ledges. Intermediates and those new to the sport should not be put off or worried. Due to the nature of the coastline there is almost always somewhere sheltered and manageable, and those looking for something challenging wont be disappointed. Morocco is blessed with well over 300 days of sunshine a year. Between the months November to February there is a small chance of rain, although statistically it is unlikely.

Dressing information

Morocco is a liberal Muslim country, and men and women are welcome to wear shorts and t-shirts. Swimming costumes and bikinis are normal on the beach but it is advisable to cover up your arms and legs a bit when walking around town. Shorts, tees and flip flops are the norm. Trousers and jumpers are sometimes needed particularly in mid winter when the evenings can be chilly so warm clothes are a good idea during that period.

Your choice of wetsuit comes down to personal choice and tolerance. The best all rounder is a 3/2mm full suit.

Mobile communication information

Nearly all networks work in Morocco. Contact your network for call charges. Coverage is good. There are an abundance of public phones (coin and cards) in Taghazout. International call charges are relatively cheap. There is free available at the L'Auberge, Taghazout Villa and Villa Mandala. There are also broadband internet cafs in Tagahzout.

Electricity information

  • Morocco is on 220 volts with two-pin round plugs.

What to bring

Yoga clothes, beach clothes, beach towel, sun cream (buy it at the airport if you don't have room, as it's more expensive here), something warm for the evenings & early morning (almost any time of year, just in case, especially between November - March)

The Moroccan currency is the Dirham. Exchange rates at last time of checking were around 14 dh to the 1 GBP, 10 dh to the EUR and 8 dh to the USD. Dirhams can only be obtained within Morocco. There are exchange facilities and ATMs in the airport. There are also plenty of ATMs in Agadir. There are no ATMs in Taghazout, the nearest is Aourir, a five minute drive from Taghazout. This machine and many other ATMs in Morocco do not accept Maestro and can be unreliable, if you have a VISA card we recommend you bring it.

Traveller's cheques are not a good idea for Morocco. They cannot be exchanged at the airport or in Taghazout and there are only a few places in Agadir that will change them.

Special menu request

  • Food allergies and other specific dietary requirements are catered for. Please just let us know before you arrive.

EU passport holders with a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date do not require a visa to enter Morocco for tourist purposes. If you hold a passport from outside the European Union we strongly recommend that you check with your nearest Moroccan Embassy.

Additional information

More information about extra activities can be read on Surf Maroc website. You can also ask your questions directly to Surf Maroc who would be glad to assist you. Simply click on the Contact Organizer button to send a message.

Tara will ensure you are challenged in your own practice whether you are new to yoga or an experienced yogi, enjoying a beautiful vinyasa flow practice delivered with lightness and a sense of humour. As well as teaching all levels of Yoga, Tara is proof that living healthily means living happily even a little crazily!

Ever since Bee first tried Vinyasa Yoga, in 1999, she has practiced regularly. After more than a decade of following dynamic and vigorous styles like Jivamukti and Ashtanga Yoga she integrated Yin Yoga into her life. The combination of this quiet, muscle-relaxed Yoga method and the poweful, yang-orientated Jivamukti Yoga keeps her personal yoga approach very balanced.

In 2007 Bee completed an 800 hour Jivamuti Yoga Teacher Traning in New York (with Sharon Gannon & David Life) and Munich (with Antje Schaefer). Since then she has taught regular classes, workshops and retreats in Germany, Austria, Italy and Morocco. In 2013 and 2014 she studied Yin Yoga with several American instructors, all inspired by Paul Grilley.

Bees All Level classes ensure that every student from the absolute beginner to the more experienced practitioner is able to feel challenged and relaxed. She insists on the deep understanding of the yogic principles of sthira & sukham (sanskrit for steady & joyful), whether young, old, strong or weak, it doesnt matter how your asanas look, it is all about how you feel. Bees highest intention is to make every yoga pose feel steady and joyful through teaching options & variations or pauses in childs pose if necessary.

Bee is convinced that peace is inside everyone of us, often hidden deep inside. Sometimes one week of regular intensive yoga practice combined with an even more intensive connection to nature (surfing!) can help to dig it out, on and off the yoga mat.... biggest smiles on your faces guaranteed!

Indulge in delicious, nutritious vegetarian food, so you can enjoy maximum energy and vitality throughout your stay. Using only the finest and freshest local produce, our talented chefs, make each day of the retreat a 'taste sensation'.

After every morning yoga class, quench your thirst with cleansing smoothies, freshly squeezed orange juice, special herbal teas & freshly brewed Moroccan coffee. Enjoy hot bread fresh from the village bakery, local honey, jams, yoghurts, eggs, crepes, dried fruits, nuts and a rainbow platter of seasonal fruits. Sit back, relax & take time over a sun-filled breakfast banquet beside the pool. The perfect way to ease into each day!

  • Our varied and delicious lunches are taken to the beach and include pastas, salads, filled baguettes, falafels, energy boosting treats and fresh fruit.

At sunset, our fantastic local chefs, create an irresistible array of traditional and contemporary Moroccan & international dishes. From tapas by the pool, to aromatic tagines, subtly spiced cous cous, vegetarian delights and divine desserts. A star lit mouthwatering feast is guaranteed to delight every palette.

A meal out on Thursday night (chefs night off) is not included in the price. We do a great BBQ on the rooftop of our Auberge, thats 130dh / approximately 9 GBP for eat as much as you like starlit feast, transport to and from the villa, live music, and fun! "I've just spent a week on a Yoga Surf Retreat at Villa Mandala, and had a wonderful time. The yoga classes and instructors were excellent, and I really enjoyed trying some new things. The surf instructors were also excellent, I am basically a beginner, but having witnessed surf lessons in the UK before, there is really no comparison - the Surf Maroc instructors teach you properly and teach you well. The week was perfect to relax and restore, no need to think apart from to make sure we were ready for the surf bus at 11am, or ready for a yoga class at the right time. Everything else seemed to just happen for you (although we all helped out clearing away after breakfast/dinner), Surf Maroc (in particular the villa hosts, Jenn and Tara) really looked after us well.Happy Memories of Villa Mandala!"

"My partner and I stayed for three nights at Villa Mandala and absolutely loved it here. The Villa is everything you could hope for - peaceful, relaxed, comfortable, stylish, a great place to hang out and read, or chat, play games etc after a long day in the sea."

"The hosts (we had Karim and Jen) are charming and just lovely people. (and both are fantastic, unique yoga teachers too, with very different yoga styles that they teach in the stunning Villa Mandala yoga studio). All the other guests were really cool people and it was really fun getting to know them a little bit in the brief time we stayed at Mandala. One of the real highlights at Villa Mandala are the meals - breakfast and dinner are fantastic! What a feast! Breakfast and dinner are both served at a huge banquet dining table in the downstairs communal area. The food is delicious and plentiful and the meals are very fun and sociable. One night we were lucky enough to go to a BBQ at the Auberge that was organised by Surf Maroc - all the guests from the three Surf Maroc locations came together to eat on the terrace at the Auberge. This was really fun, the food was incredible and it was a great atmosphere. One thing you should know before coming to Villa Mandala is that the environment surrounding the Villa is not that nice. You have to drive through a weird kind of wasteland to get there, with lots of trash everywhere, and random little fires sometimes. (The locals burning off trash from the market I think). This just happens to be the location, and once you're at the Villa itself it doesn't matter at all - but I'm writing it here in case you are expecting a tropical paradise. Be warned! The Taghazout area is a little rough around the edges, so if you're looking for somewhere pristine and perfect, maybe go elsewhere.Another thing to expect is that all of the prices at the Villa are more or less what you'd pay in Europe. (prices for the meals, classes, board rental, drinks, snacks etc). It's not overpriced or expensive, but it is not cheap either. I wouldn't recommend Villa Mandala if you are on a tight budget. One more thing - I have no idea if this is the fault of the Villa, or if it was a weird bug in the local sea water or what - but almost everyone that was staying at the Villa on our trip got sick with a real nasty stomach bug. I got it, my boyfriend got it, and pretty much everyone else too.I feel bad saying this because it may have been an outside factor, but be aware that this could happen and it ain't pretty!"

"I ended up having to take pretty strong antibiotics and Immodium etc, and it cut a good couple of days out of my trip. It wasn't fun being sick!Apart from these points, honestly I can say that I LOVE Villa Mandala and I would love to go back. It's a special place - check it out you won't regret it ! (just remember to pack that Immodium!)"

"Great yoga teachers, amazing food, brilliant organisation and the surfing was fantastic. You really don't have to think about anything except yoga, surfing and eating. Becky and Jen were great hosts and have an excellent yoga programme in place - vinyasa flow in the mornings and restorative in the evenings. Red and Youness were extremely thorough in their surf lessons and I was surfing out the back after four days."

"This was my first surf trip abroad. From the moment you arrive they make you feel totally at home. The accommodation is clean and comfortable and the communal eating and socialising adds to the whole experience. The food is amazing. There are several little chill out zones around the so you can be sociable or have a bit of quiet time in the sun or shade. The surfing experience was just what I had hoped for. They take you to the best spots (even if it means a long drive). Dawnies were no problem. The surf guides really new their stuff and were incredibly friendly. The tips and pointers I got also took my surfing to a new level. The country is amazing.I would recommend it to a complete beginner or an advanced surfer. What ever your level you will be looked after."

"My friend and I have just returned from a week long surf camp at Taghazout Villa and would recommend it to anyone. The atmosphere was super relaxed, the hosts were welcoming, and the guides really went out of their way to make sure we got the most out if our surf trip. The surf camp option gave us the perfect balance between being looked after but also gave us heaps of flexibility, for example the guides were keen to accommodate our need for early starts so that we beat the wind. Thanks again we miss you already!"

"This place is truly special, its all in my title, to have my feet in African soil is a piece of home for the heart and Surf Maroc has so much spirit, bags of it. Its incredible to see how much ones spirit can shine when doing what you love. A good reminder to myself :)We did the Roxy Girl surf week, all inclusive package, was great fun and learnt so much, incredibly helpful and something I will always remember when surfing again. Coaching was brilliant, for anyone who wants to learn how to surf or improve their skills this is definitely one to go for, girls only of course ;) The coach Lisa is wicked, she has such a fiery spirit and is one heck of a little dynamite, very special energy indeed. Her knowledge and experience helps one feel safe and reassured. Lovely Rosies assistance and gentle guidance was very warming. The whole package of the trip was just awesome, food is amazing, (thank you chefs) and the locals are great fun, and everyone at Surf Maroc is awesome. The Taghazout Villa we stayed at was perfect, simple, refreshing and overlooking the beach, what more could you want.Yoga at sunset was lovely, thank you so much Vicky for your warm love, energy and help. For someone who has never done yoga before, it is hard but I cant wait to get into it fully. This also wasnt just a sunny getaway for me, I took something special away from this experience, you are faced with your fears and faced with yourself, the hardest things to overcome.I will definitely be going back there and will be making a longer trip of it, Surf Maroc and Morocco, such a special gem of the world. Thank you guys so much, to all of you, thanks to Tom for a very warm welcome and throughout our trip, you guys rock!!!! "
