Each of the 42 meticulously crafted guest rooms has been inspired by the African heritage and natural splendour, welcoming guests to experience the romance and simplicity of a 1920's lakeside retreat. %Designed in the manner of a stone cottage, all accommodations are clustered around a village square adorned with beautifully tended lawns and extensive gardens. In warm hues of red and crisp shades of white, rooms feature classic country house design touches like tile floors, leaded windows, and French doors giving way to garden and lake views.

Mount Kilimanjaro, on the northern Tanzania border with Kenya, has become a major destination for mountaineers and trekkers from around the world. The mountain’s ecosystems are as strikingly beautiful as they are varied and diverse.

Your hike will begin at 9:00 a.m. You will hike through the rain forest from the Marangu Gate (starting at 6,000 meters) to Mandara Hut (9,000 meters), which will take about three to four hours. You will stop halfway to enjoy lunch, reaching the Mandara Hut at about 1:30 p.m. After a short tour at the hut, you will descend back to Marangu Gate and return to Arusha Serena Hotel for hot showers, a yoga stretch, group dinner, and a chat about your exciting day on the mountain.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park

After breakfast, you will depart in the early morning for Lake Manyara National Park for your first game drive. Lake Manyara is a scenic gem with a setting described by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa” and is considered a must visit as part of a Tanzania safari. Its famous tree-climbing lions are another reason to pay a visit to this park.

In addition to the lions, the park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world. Also, more than 400 species of birds have been recorded, including thousands of pink-hued flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, and storks.

After your game drive, you will visit Mto Wa Mbu village where you will enjoy a local, cultural experience with an English speaking guide who grew up in the village. Via bicycle, you will visit local farms, schools, a kindergarten, local homes, and the market and milling machines. Local lunch will be served in a lovely banana plantation deep inside Mto Wa Mbu village. Later in the afternoon, you will drive to Lake Manyara Serena Hotel for dinner and sleepy time.

  • Transfers, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, game drive, overnight at hotel

The vast majority of people who travel to Tanzania come to experience the amazing wildlife that can be seen while on a Tanzania safari. Thousands of wild animals and tropical birds make Tanzania their home. With its wide plains, dense forests, majestic mountains, and shimmering lakes, visitors will be spoiled for choice in both animal and bird life viewing.

Day 4: Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai language, meaning endless plains. It is also well known for its wildebeest migration which takes place twice a year.

Nearly one million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras move from the northern hills to the south every October and November during the short rains. They then move toward the west and north from April to June. Nowhere else on Earth is there a sight to rival the spectacle of hoofed animals on the march. Serengeti has the highest concentration of large mammals on this planet and is famous for its lions, the highest concentration found anywhere.

Apart from the big five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), one can view the majority of other well known species of animals on a Tanzania safari.

On this day, after breakfast, you head to Serengeti National Park. En route, you will visit the Olduvai Gorge site of archaeological findings, where traces of prehistoric men dating back to three and a half million years ago have been discovered. Mid-day you will stop for lunch at the lodge before an afternoon game drive, followed by a sundowner with canapes. Watch the beautiful African sunset while enjoying some adult beverages!

  • Transfers, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, game drive, overnight at lodge

Day 5: Hot air balloon over the Serengeti

This morning you will enjoy a magical hot air balloon safari. This is a very early morning wake-up. Grab your tea or coffee in the lobby and head out before the sun rises to the balloon staging site. Just as the sun rises, you will start your flight.

During the flight, you will ascend to a high altitude to take in an amazing panoramic view of the Serengeti National Park and then descend to treetop level and silently glide above the wildlife below. If you are lucky, you will get to experience seeing the wildebeest migration from above. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Upon landing, your pilot will pop the cork on some chilled bubbly which you will enjoy along with a bush breakfast. Many consider this day one of the most amazing experiences of their life and the highlight of their holiday.

Following the balloon safari, you will have a morning and afternoon game drive with picnic lunch in the Serengeti National Park, and a bush dinner that evening back at the Serengeti Sopa Lodge. If you are lucky, you might spot some animals grazing nearby.

  • Transfers, breakfast, lunch, dinner, hot air balloon, game drive, overnight at lodge

Day 6: Karatu, Ngorongoro National Park, and the Maasai

After breakfast and morning game drive, you will visit the Maasai village to experience the beautiful culture of the Maasai people. You will be greeted by Massai warriors and the inhabitants of the boma (Maasai community) and experience what a day in the life of the Maasai tribe looks like. Meet the locals with a jambo (hello) or jambo rafiki (hello my friend).

During this visit, you will have the opportunity to trade or purchase authentically made Maasai jewelry and other unique Maasai goods.

Transfer afterwards to the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge for a yoga class and dinner.

  • Transfers, breakfast, box lunch, dinner, cycling, overnight at lodge

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a park in the north-west of Tanzania and is often called Africa’s Eden and is considered the eighth natural wonder of the world. It contains an ancient extinct volcano that has collapsed and formed a deep crater with steep sides that have become a natural enclosure for a wide variety of wildlife on a Tanzania safari.

Lions are in the highest density in the world in the crater, so there is an excellent chance of seeing them while on your Tanzania safari. There are herds of wildebeest, zebra, and a lot of buffaloes and gazelles. This is also one of the best places in east Africa to see a black rhino. Hyenas are a common predator and cheetahs are frequently seen. Leopards are in the conservation area but rarely seen, along with wild dogs.

Just outside the crater’s ridge, the Maasai herd their cattle and goats over the green pastures through the highland slopes, living alongside the wildlife as they have for centuries. It is also home to Olduvai Gorge, where the leakeys (world renowned archaeologists) discovered the remains of a 1.8 million year old skeleton, one of the distinct links of the human evolutionary chain. Fossils found here on a Tanzania safari show that the area is one of the oldest sites of human habitation in the world.

Continue to Arusha Serena Hotel for canoeing on Lake Duluti. Glide across the smooth surface of this small crater lake and view the giant kingfisher, fish eagle, darters, and many more. Surrounded by forested crater walls, this is a very special and quiet one and a half hours canoeing experience. A well-trained guide will accompany the safari. He will ensure your safety and enjoyment while explaining more about the natural environment, wildlife, and cultures living in and around the lake.

  • Transfers, breakfast, box lunch, dinner, canoeing, overnight at hotel

Day 8: Departure

Enjoy your last rise and shine yoga class before breakfast and goodbyes. After breakfast and packing, you will board for a transfer to the airport.

  • Breakfast, airport transfer

Note: This holiday is for outdoor enthusiasts and nature and animal lovers alike. If you love the outdoors, being active, off the beaten path adventures, culture, and traveling, this holiday is for you.

Optional Zanzibar add-on

If you wish to extend your stay and spend some time relaxing after a week in the wild, Zanzibar, the spice island, is an island of dreams about 35 kilometers off the coast of mainland Tanzania. This extraordinarily beautiful island is one of the most un-spoiled and enchanting of all the tropical islands, steeped in tradition and culture.

The Arabic influence in the old Stone Town lives strongly and one can wander for hours through the maze of ancient streets, exploring the busy market stalls and little shops, famed particularly for their beautiful wood carvings. Alternatively, pass the days relaxing on one of the 25 brilliant white beaches, or snorkeling in the clear blue warm waters.

Zanzibar offers some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world, and the locals are always at hand to take the visitors canoeing in their beautifully carved dhows (a lateen-rigged ship with one or two masts).

Your airport transfer to Arusha Airport (ARK) to Zanzibar departs at 1:00 p.m. and arrives at 2:15 p.m. On arrival at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), you will be met and transferred to the Ocean Paradise Resort for three nights in a standard garden or sea view room.

Ocean Paradise Resort is set within six and a half acres of colorful gardens and an extensive natural palm grove, which leads to a white sandy beach and the azure Indian Ocean. An east African influence is incorporated into the design of the hotel from its traditional thatched buildings and interior décor, to the Maasai warrior who greets you on arrival.

Activities abound in and around this luxury resort. You can choose to do water sports, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and scuba diving, as the resort is a licensed padi center. Other activities include beach volleyball, billiards, and table tennis.

You can also take part in one of the many excursions to see the sights of the exotic island of Zanzibar, such as visiting the spice plantations, Jozani Forest, or historical Stone Town.

Accommodation at Ocean Paradise Resort consists of 100 traditional, Makuti-thatched African roundhouses. Some rooms are positioned on a rise on the escarpment, while others are set closer to the beach in the large palm grove. Rooms are fully air-conditioned and decorated in a tribal African style with comfortable twin or king-size beds draped with mosquito netting. Facilities include satellite TV and radio, direct dial telephone, mini-bar, and a unique curved en-suite bathroom, with shower, toilet, and bidet.

While in Zanzibar, you may want to take a day trip to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage center. Stroll along Stone Town’s seafront promenade, fill your stomach at the forodhani gardens food market, wander the old fort, visit the giant tortoise on Prison Island, learn about Zanzibar’s sultans at the Palace Museum, go to Africa House Hotel to watch the sunset from their rooftop terrace, pay witness to the former slave market - this is definitely one of the absolute musts when it comes to things to do in Stone Town.

Get lost in the narrow streets, make an international phone call at Jaws Corner, take a spice tour where you’ll get to sample local spices, as well as learn about their history and production within the context of the great trading port of Zanzibar, enjoy some souvenir shopping, and visit Freddy Mercury’s house.

Note: The trip to Zanzibar excludes tips, international return airfare, airport tax (pay directly at the airport), and drinks. Zanzibar bed night tax is 1 USD per person per night, infrastructure tax is collected from the guests directly by the hotel on arrival.
