Refugios Los Cuernos is an amazing, small, and cozy mountain refuge located on the shores of Lake Nordenskjold. You will stay there during one night in this holiday experience.
The camp is nestled in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park and with a prime view of the majestic Torres (towers of rock). Sunset is usually around 11:00 p.m. during the summer months, meaning that there will be enough daylight for you to admire the Patagonian steppe with its guanacos and snow-peaked mountain horizon.
Scattered across the hilltop site of EcoCamp, the quaint standard domes have 10 square meters and pop out of the foliage, opening up to reveal a compact but charming interior with a large warm bed. A special feature of the standard domes is its skylights, which allow you to look up at the stars as you fall asleep.
Without heating but cozy and snug with fleece blankets, these domes are the perfect home to return to after a day's trek. The domes also have separate gender shared bathrooms, which are large, comfortable, and gender divided.
Both male and female bathrooms have showers with ample space to dry and put on clothes, hot water, composting toilets, and hand wash basins. Standard domes do not have electricity but you can charge cameras and other devices in the community areas.

On this trip, you will enjoy three yoga classes, explore Grey Glacier by kayak, trek to the world famous Tower Base, one of the most spectacular sights in all of Patagonia, travel by horseback through the wilderness of Torres Del Paine National Park or cycle through the breath-taking estancia Laguna Azul, explore the French Valley, and be part of the famous W Trek! There’s no limit to the adventures you’ll have on this epic Patagonia retreat.
The trip begins with you being picked up at Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport (PUQ) in the morning and driven to EcoCamp Patagonia located in the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park. En route, you will make a stop in Puerto Natales, a small, lively town on the shores of “Seno de Ultima Esperanza”, where you will enjoy a hearty local lunch.
The journey is scenic and highly atmospheric, featuring many wild birds and wonderful Patagonian landscapes. The day ends with your arrival to enjoy a yoga class to stretch out after a long drive and with an overnight stay at EcoCamp Patagonia.
After breakfast at EcoCamp, you will head off at 9:00 a.m. to Grey Lake in the western sector of the park located about a two hour drive away. You will cross the glacial lake in a boat, during which you will get to enjoy views of the Paine massif in addition to the impressive glacier which forms part of the Southern Patagonian ice field.
Near the glacier, you will leave the boat and spend the day kayaking on Grey Lake. Kayaking gear like neoprene suit, waterproof-jacket, gloves, life jacket, spray skirt, and boots are all included for this excursion.
Then, you will paddle out onto the lake and head towards the eastern face of the glacier. Navigating in between gigantic floating icebergs, eventually you will come almost face-to-face with the mighty wall of the glacier itself. You will stop to enjoy lunch and a hot drink to replenish your energy while admiring the immensity of the iceberg and its myriad shades of blue. Then, you will take the boat back passing the glacier, returning to land, and boarding the van to EcoCamp for your evening aperitif and meal.
You will walk from EcoCamp towards Hostería Las Torres before ascending to Ascencio Valley on the Tower’s eastern face. Mountain ridges, beech forests, and small rivers line the scenic walk towards the valley. The big challenge comes in the form of the steep moraine, a huge mass of boulders which will lead you to the iconic base-view of the Towers, three gigantic granite monoliths, the remains of a great cirque sheared away by the forces of glacial ice.
After a tough uphill climb, the Towers eventually come into full view, rising majestically before you, with the glacial lake visible below. Is there any better place in the world to have lunch? After feasting on the view and our picnic, you backtrack along the same trail through Ascencio Valley and return to EcoCamp for a well-deserved dinner and relaxing yoga class.
One of the best ways to enjoy all that Patagonia has to offer is by riding through it on horseback. This excursion departs at 9:30 a.m., after a hearty breakfast at EcoCamp. You will admire the most spectacular parts of Paine hill with a full day of horseback riding. Venturing through forest and crossing streams, all the while surrounded by amazing greenery.
There are five different prairies along this trip and experienced riders are welcome to gallop through these parts at their leisure. If you visit in February, you will be able see the Encantado valley. Lunch will be served at the Seron campsite, where you will enjoy a spectacular view, featuring parts of las Torres, Mount Admiral Nieto, the Blue lagoon, and the Paine River.
Depending on the group, you can decide to stay out riding past 4:00 p.m. or choose to head back early to EcoCamp and enjoy an evening cocktail. If you are a horseback riding fanatic this is the perfect adventure for you and if this excursion is cancelled because of climate conditions, it will be replaced by a trek to French Valley.
After breakfast, you will start your biking adventure. The roughly 10-kilometer morning bike excursion follows a route inside the Laguna Azul Estancia close to where it meets Baguales, heading up to Saltos Las Chinas.
Once you are back at Laguna Azul, you will enjoy a box lunch with a beautiful view of the Towers and when you are ready to continue, the van will take you to the next bike track.
The second excursion is a 17-kilometer biking track through Cañadón Macho, finishing at a junction with the road near Cascada Paine. Although the cycling is not too demanding, there are some sections of the trail that have some difficulty at the point where Cañadon Macho crosses a meadow and starts climbing, followed by an undulating stretch of descent, which is a little steep and rocky.
You will begin this day with a pleasant walk through the sinuous Cuernos Trail which leads you alongside the beautiful Lake Nordenskjold. During this warm-up walk, you will have the opportunity to admire the exquisite flora and fauna, as you enjoy the magnificent views of the park’s central lakes and the Paine’s Horns, majestic black horn-like peaks of slate atop gray granite which crowns the center of the Massif. The trek ends at Refugio Campsite Los Cuernos, a small and cozy mountain refuge located on the shores of Lake Nordenskjold. The evening is free for relaxing and enjoying dinner.
After breakfast at Refugio Los Cuernos, you will begin the challenging trek to Valle Frances (French Valley), along a steep trail that leads to the very heart of the Paine Massif. How far in you go depends on the group’s trekking rhythm. A swifter walk will lead you to the hanging bridge over the French River, located at the foot of the south-east face of the Massif, where you will be treated to fantastic views of the valley.
You will then continue to ascend towards the upper section of the valley where you will be able to marvel at the extensive mass of the valley’s geological formations; "hoja (Blade)", "máscara (Mask)", "espada (Sword)", "catedral (Cathedral)", "aleta de tiburón (Shark’s Fin)", and the magnificent "fortaleza (Fortress)". After your upward trek, you will pause for a picnic and relax a while.
This day’s trek will end as you descend through an undulating terrain of mixed grassland and light forest which will take you to Refugio Paine Grande area where you will take the catamaran across Pudeto Lake and a private transfer will be waiting to take you to Ecocamp. After the arrival, you will have one hour to enjoy a relaxing yoga class before dinner.
After breakfast and goodbyes, you will board an early morning transfer to the airport. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a scenic ride back to Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport (PUQ) to catch your evening flight.
