The covered bridges of the White Mountains are an integral part of the landscape and a place to wait out a summer shower, steal a kiss, or watch raging river waters swollen by the melting winter snows. Covered bridges were often called "courting bridges." Their distinctive shapes form a signature for New Hampshire. The reason why the first covered bridges were built has been obscured by time. Some say that horses were more comfortable crossing an enclosed span than an open trestle. Others point to the fact that a bridge lasts longer if its heavy timbers are protected.
White Mountains of New Hampshire is a home to stunning waterfalls, relaxing swimming holes, and incredible wildlife, such as moose, black bear, loons, fox, turkey, and rainbow trout. You might spot some of this wildlife just by walking on one of the thousands of hiking trails in the White Mountains.
You may also get an insider's glimpse of where wildlife live by taking a Moose Tour. If you spend a little time in one of state parks, you will witness some of New Hampshire's finest flora and fauna.
There are short hikes that, for minimal effort, can take you to a waterfall or a spectacular view, as well as longer hikes to scenic outlooks, lakes and ponds, and mountain summits.
