The retreat will be hosted at Dar Il-Hena, meaning house of happiness, peace, and tranquility, a beautiful 300-year-old converted farmhouse with all mod cons in the village of Ghasri. It is fully detached so peace and quiet are guaranteed, making it the ideal location for a retreat with its stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

The farmhouse has an outdoor pool, indoor and outdoor spaces for your yoga practice and a treatment / meditation room. It has four bedrooms, two of which are en-suite and two with their own separate bathroom. Two of the bedrooms can sleep up to three people, the other two rooms sleep two. One of these rooms is superior with its own private terrace.

Ghasri is the smallest village in Gozo with a supermarket and a lovely family run restaurant serving local and international cuisine, both of which are five minutes away from the retreat. You just have to walk out the door in any direction and there are beautiful country walks. Ghasri is dominated by Ta Gurdan Lighthouse standing 180 meters above sea level on a flat-topped hill, high above the village.

A steep path leads up to the lighthouse, with the reward of spectacular 360-degree views across the island. The village lies nestled between the hills of Zebbug and Ghammar overlooking the Ghasri Valley, which is ideal for walkers and cyclists alike.

The scenery ends in a beautiful tight gorge dropping into the sea, a site popular with divers & ideal for swimming. Ten minutes walk away is Ta Pinu church, famous for its healing powers.

This is an experience that will relax, revive and restore you. After the great success of Sunra Yoga's first two seasons, Sunra is delighted to offer retreats for the third season in this stunning location. A jewel in the Mediterranean with its wonderful weather, stunning scenery, and pristine beaches, steeped in history and as yet quite unspoiled, we invite you to come, relax, and enjoy the beautiful and unique island of Gozo.

This is a great opportunity to deepen your practice and for beginners to jump in at the deep end. Although this retreat includes meditation sessions, it focuses mainly on the yoga practice. There will be two daily one and a half hour classes per day based on the Sivananda system.

Both will include asanas, pranayama, and meditation. All levels can be catered for and classes are tailored to suit each student individually. In your free time, you can just chill by the pool and relax, wander around the village or take a sightseeing tour around the island. Scuba diving and snorkeling trips are also available as well as a boat trip around Camino Island. All other activities are not included and you will be able to arrange them at your leisure.

Instructors

Barbara Gordon
Barbara has been teaching yoga for over thirty years. She has taught yoga to over a quarter of a million people over the years and trained many of London's now leading teachers. She teaches yoga and runs courses all over the world and to date has certified over three hundred yoga teachers. Born in Scotland, she began her yoga studies in London and from there went to the Sivananda Ashram in Val Morin Canada to study with Swami Vishnudevananda in the Sivananda style of teaching yoga.
Jane Nayar
Jane teaches Dynamic Yoga, a deep Hatha flow, allowing the movement to take you into a journey of self enquiry within your yoga posture practice. Jane has been practising yoga for 22 years & completed her training in September 2013, although she continues to train and practice with her teachers whenever possible. You can expect a safe and gentle approach to your practice within her teaching, with the experience of knowing how to take the body into a deeper level of consciousness during posture practice.    

Retreat location

Gozo is easily accessed by a 20-minute ferry ride which runs 24/7 from the port in Malta, about one hour from Malta International Airport (MLA). Airlines fly daily from all over Europe offering inexpensive flights all year round.

Sunra Yoga is delighted to include brunch and dinner, prepared and served by the fabulous Philen, That Indian Food Guy, your personal chef for the week. He specializes in the use of spices according to India's 5000-year-old Life Science, Ayurveda for their healing and health-enhancing properties.

Drink spiced teas and eat a variety of exciting vegetarian meals, let your taste buds tingle with exotic aromas and flavors, feel your body's digestive system heal and your immune system and energy boosted. Having your personal chef means that every meal is tailor-made for you.

Speak openly with him, ask questions and allow yourself to be healed by nature during your retreat. Personalised spice blends can also be prepared for you to take home. Take advantage of his free cooking class, where you'll learn simple techniques that you can take home to spice up your veggie life with exciting flavor, aroma, color, and health.

You'll be tasting the results of your newly honed skills for dinner. Special dietary needs can be met, Sunra Yoga requires a seven-day advance notice. Herbal teas are available 24 / 7 and you can use the tap water for these. They will also provide you with drinking water.

Things to do (optional)

In each week there will be one free day giving you plenty of time to travel around the island sightseeing as well as between morning and evening classes. Public transport is very cheap and easy to use. There is a flat rate of 2 EUR for any bus journey or you can purchase a seven-day Explore card for 21 EUR. You can go to all the sites of interest, in any part of Malta and Gozo.

You can hop on or off anytime, as many times as you want, and at any time. This card is valid for travel on day services and night services. You can also hire cars, bicycles, and scooters locally, please ensure you bring your license. The nearest place to swim in the sea is Ghasri Gorge, a 15-minute walk away from the farmhouse.

There are many steps up and down but it's totally worth the effort. Another fabulous location to swim is at the inlet at Dwejra where you will also have a yoga class and sunset meditation, if weather permits. The beach is very picturesque with traditional colorful fishing boats bobbing up and down, and with beautiful nature surrounding the lagoon.

It has shallow, calm and safe waters with a pebbly shore and seabed. There are two sandy beaches on the island. Ramla Bay, which is the largest of the two, offers sun beds, umbrellas, a cafeteria, and San Blas, which is small with a very steep walk from the road, but worth the trek.

There is a jeep service available for 3 EUR each way if you prefer to take it easy. There are also sun loungers, umbrellas, and a cafeteria here. The bus stop is a five-minute walk from the retreat and from there you can take a 15-minute bus ride from Victoria and then another bus on to both beaches.

Please note from Ghasri to Victoria the buses run once per hour. Victoria, the capital of Gozo, is buzzy and lively, full of shops, restaurants, and cafes where you can sit outside and watch the world go by. You can also visit Gran Castello, a citadel in an area of Victoria which has been inhabited since the Bronze Age.

The Cittadella is a combination of a medieval castle and an early modern gunpowder fortress, with its northern walls retaining a largely medieval form and its southern walls dating back to a 17th-century reconstruction. Ġgantija in Xaghra is a megolithic temple, the oldest known ruins in the world, even older than the Pyramids. Coach parties stop here but if you wait for them to pass through it is much easier to get a sense of the scale of the temples and the effort it must have taken to construct then so long ago.

There is some information given out and tickets for here also get you into the Ta Kola windmill and can be used once for each attraction over a couple of weeks so you don't need to visit them both on the same day. Most villages in Gozo have a quaint square in its center with a church. These squares are generally surrounded by bars and restaurants. The churches are stunning and always worth a visit.

How to get there

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Malta International Airport (MLA). Transfer from and to the airport is included but can be arranged for 35 EUR each way per person. You will be met by their transfer company Thames Garage at the airport, the driver will be holding a sign with your name/s and will drive you to the ferry.

This takes approximately one hour, depending on traffic and the ferry ride to Gozo is a further 20 minutes. Another driver from Thames Garage will meet you on arrival in Gozo and take you to the retreat, a further 20 minutes drive. You do not need to pay for the ferry on the way to Gozo, there will be a 4.70 EUR fee on the way back.

Alternatively, you can make your own way to and from the retreat, Sunra Yoga recommends using Shuttledirect for door-to-door service.

Gozo is easily accessed by a twenty-minute ferry ride that runs every day from the port in Malta, half an hour from Malta International Airport (MLA).
