Ulaanbaatar hotel

When in Ulaanbaatar, the accommodation is a comfortable well-facilitated hotel in central Ulaanbaatar. Rooms provided in the tour cost are same sex twin shares, so you may be sharing a room with a fellow adventurer. Upgrade to a private room is available for an additional fee. Please mention when booking.

Tourist ger camp

A traditional style of hotel in the country. Ger camps usually consist of 10 to 20 comfortable Gers (a.k.a Yurt, traditional style home) containing 2 to 4 beds in each Ger. They often have Ger restaurants and souvenir shops or some entertainment spaces. Most camps are equipped with toilets and showers facilities.

Guest ger

Guest ger camps are more basic than tourist ger camps. Normally there are 2 to 7 gers that are operated by nomads who are experienced in dealing with travellers. Facilities are usually basic and may rarely have a shower and modern toilet. Staying at a guest ger is a great way to support local small businesses and sustainability.


This is one of the best ways to experience Mongolia. Here, you can set up your tent anywhere you want. You will mainly use nature toilet when camping. SteppeYoga will provide camping shower tents so you can wash. You will camp by the lakes and rivers where you can swim and refresh yourself.



Day 1: Ulaanbaatar City Tour

Welcome to Mongolia! This is the official first day of the tour. SteppeYoga will pick you up from your hotel at 10 a.m. and take you on a tour of Ulaanbaatar City (UB). You will visit the National Museum of Mongolia, and Chinggis Khan Main Square. You can also pick up essential supplies for the trip if you need. In the evening, join the welcome lunch at a traditional Mongolian restaurant and get to know your host and fellow travelers.

Day 2: Kharkhorin Ancient Capital City

Let the adventure begin! Today you will drive to Kharkhorin town where the Mongol Empire was once governed. Located at the crossroads of The Silk Road, this ancient city was founded by Chinggis (Genghis) Khaan in 1220.

In Kharkhorin city, you will visit the impressive Erdene Zuu monastery. This monastery was built in 1586 and is surrounded by massive 400 x 400 meters stupa walls. Not a single nail was used in the construction of the ornate temples, it is one of the few in the world that remains standing after the communist purges.

Day 3: Orkhon Waterfall

Every morning from this day, you will start the morning with yogic practices such as yoga asana, pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation in the open air, nature’s yoga studio. You’ll drive 70 kilometers to the Orkhon waterfall, the biggest in Mongolia. The amount of water present will be dependent on recent rainfall.

The waterfall was formed by a unique combination of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes about 20,000 years ago. It cascades from an impressive height of 20 meters and its width is 10 meters. The Orkhon waterfall area is one of the best places to observe the Mongolian nomadic lifestyle, with plenty of photo opportunities.

Day 4: Orkhon Waterfall

Rest day in this beautiful area and preparation for your horse riding journey.

Day 5 to 8: Eight Lakes Horse Riding Journey

After the morning yoga ritual, the exciting horse riding journey starts! You will ride across Mongolia’s wild, wide open steppe on one of the strongest, toughest, and resilient horses in the world. Today, you will be riding along a steppe for a few hours to warm up before heading out on real adventurous rides for the next

few days. If you are a first timer to riding horses, do not worry. SteppeYoga will give you all the necessary safety instructions and support that you need.

You will have your tour leader Selenge and also horse riding guides, who are experienced at handling horses. Get excited about embarking on a wild adventure, that you have only watched in movies; now this time you get to experience it yourself!

Each day of the horse riding, you will have 1 to 2 hours of morning yoga practice, depending on how you go with horse riding each day! You will leave most of your luggage with the drivers and only grab what you need for next four days and load it on top of the horses; like warriors in ancient times!

The land on the way to the Eight Lakes area is truly wild, rough and stunning. There are high mountainous areas and stunning pine tree forests rough volcanic side tracks. You will be granted the jaw-dropping landscapes and most satisfying adventures of your life.

Connect with yourself and with your beloved, sturdy, and intuitive Mongolian horse and get ready for a wild adventure! The area of Naiman Nuur aka ”Eight lakes” is locked between several extinct volcanoes and high mountain peaks. The lakes are supplied with fresh water running from the mountains, making dramatic scenery. You will be staying next to a nomadic family and the best way to connect with them is playing and partying with them!

On day 6 and 8, you will ride horses 4 to 6 hours. Day 7 will be a full rest day. Morning yoga sessions will sooth the body and mind. There are a few perfect nights to gather around the bonfire and exchange stories with your friendly fellow travellers.

Day 9: Elsen Tasarhai aka “Mini Gobi Desert”

Today, you will drive to Elsen Tasarhai (Mini Gobi sand dunes). Elsen Tasarhai has stunning nature and culture; a perfect way to experience true authentic Mongolian culture. You will witness 80 kilometers long streets of sand dunes, desert that contains fragmented forest in the midst of wide open green steppes. The area is surrounded by the Sacred mountain range Khogno Khan.

Day 10: Elsen Tasarhai and Khogno Khan Mountains

First, you will do the morning ritual. Then you will do some two humped camel riding, you can hike along the sand dunes! Later in the day, you’ll visit a small temple in the sacred mountain Khogno Khan, the landscape here is stunning. In the evening, you will have the official closing ceremony!

If you are continuing onto the Gobi Desert adventure then let’s call this the half way ceremony. Elsen Tasarhai is Selenge’s favourite place to practice yoga. The simplicity, pace and culture of this place will astonish you.

Day 11: Drive back to Ulaanbaatar City

After your morning yoga session, you’ll travel back to Ulaanbaatar City.

Day 12: Departure

This is a free day, with no organised activities. Enjoy the day at your own pace. If you’d like to discover more of UB, Steppe Yoga can advise (in advance) about shopping visits, museum tours, and taxi ride back to the airport.

Things to consider:

  • While no yoga experience is necessary, a moderate level of physical fitness is required.
  • Please note that the weather is significantly colder in Western Mongolia than the rest of the country.
  • The mountain tours are in western Mongolia.
  • You will be engaging in physical activities such as hiking, horse riding, and camel riding
  • You will sometimes be sharing a sleeping area with your fellow group members.
  • Some days will include long drives with bumpy roads.
  • In rural areas, squat toilets are often used and hot water is not always reliable.
  • Drinking clean water and being aware of food contamination is important.
  • Again, what you might be used to around OHS and general hygiene is not always the same as home.
  • Being flexible is very important. The schedule may have to change due to weather, or other unforeseen circumstances
  • That said, travelling through this beautiful country you will witness breathtaking sights, make new friends, meet friendly locals and much more. This will surely be one of the most fulfilling life changing adventures of you’ll ever have!

This tour will take you from Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin, Orkhon Waterfalls, Eight Lakes, Elsen Tasarhai, and Khogno Khan Mountains in Mongolia.

Nature of travelling in Mongolia

While Mongolia is an amazing, magical place, it is a developing country; so things don’t always work like they do at home, and some luxuries or creature comforts are not always available. These trips are for intrepid types who are comfortable in isolated natural areas, often with very basic amenities.


During this tour, you will be provided with daily meals as stated in the itinerary. Drinking water is also included. The SteppeYoga team are committed support your health as a whole throughout the travel. They will cater for vegetarian and as well meat diets. All meals are freshly cooked by the local tour chef everyday and it’s healthy nourishing food to keep up your energy! While travelling though remote areas, it’s sometimes hard to eat ultra healthy as you might in towns and cities, but SteppeYoga strive to provide as healthy food as possible.
