The YogaWorks method is a beautiful blend of three strands of the Krishnamacharya lineage Ashtanga, Iyengar, and the teachings of Desikachar. It consists of intelligent sequencing that is specifically designed to meet the needs of average yoga students. The dynamic and conscious practice of asana is the cornerstone of the YogaWorks method. YogaWorks teachers will provide you with intelligent, accessible tools for teaching and a safe and effective yoga class
Ashtanga is an intense yoga; it has flowing style in which the same poses are done in the same order. It follows the primary series and focuses on breath, drishti (gaze) and bandhas (internal locks) for a dynamic practice. This is a great practice for type A people who are driven and dedicated. Those who want an intense practice will have visible results. Ashtanga classes are done with a 90 minute practice and the short method is the primary series condensed into a 60 minute practice.
This is a series of asanas that flow in a synchronizing movement and breath. This style of yoga requires physical energy for your mind to stay focused which allows you to be in the present moment with your body rather than being stuck in your head. This practice is very often done with music so the movements become smooth and flowing and almost dance like.
Hatha yoga is a slower paced style which is great for beginners. It focuses strongly on alignment and pranayama (breath work) and relaxing in to the held asana (posture) will really give you the opportunity to feel yoga and not just do yoga. This is the perfect introduction to your yoga practice.
This is a very relaxing form of yoga. Yin balances out your dynamic life style especially if you are always busy and on the go. Yin enables us to tap into a much softer energy. Yin yoga is primarily for the joints and not the muscles. In Yin yoga the postures can be held for several minutes at a time in order to stretch out the connective tissue around the joints. This type of yoga is suitable for almost all levels of students.
Prana which means life force, yama means to control. In this session you will discover the breath to clear the physical and emotional obstacles in your body so that you can breathe freely and deeply and allow the prana to flow freely within yourself. Through a regular pranayama practice you can re-charge your entire being. Since your breathing patterns are linked to your state of mind, you will breathe very differently when you are angry and when you are calm. Different breathing techniques will be used for energizing and detoxing such as kappalabhati others are calming and relaxing such as nadi shodhana. To experience the real benefits of pranayama a regular practice of ten to twenty minutes a day will make you feel more alive, alert and relaxed. During the program, you will have pranayama with a 15 minute meditation. You will learn new meditations from japa, to mantra, and mindfulness meditation.
Two activities are included to compliment with the yoga program. The activities would be an afternoon trek and a horse riding session.
Vanessa began her yoga journey in 1997 whilst living in Miami, Florida. It was her friend, Sarah-Jayne, who first showed her a sun salutation and she took her first Ashtanga yoga class which was held on a rooftop overlooking the sea with a full moon rising which was a truly magical experience. In 2001, her interest in yoga began to flourish. She moved from Miami to the majestic mountains of Vail, Colorado, she then met yoga teacher Charry Morris and began to practice Vinyasa flow yoga.
This soon became a meditation in motion for her and through practice she became increasingly more connected to her mind body, spirit, and breathing. She was thirsty for knowledge and kept an open mind. She then began to study different styles of yoga while working at the local yoga studio in Vail Village. Living in the Rocky Mountains gave her the opportunity for lots of snowboarding, but more importantly, attend the yoga journal conference in Estes Park.
In 2004, she completed her teacher training with Baron Baptiste at the Omega Institute in Austin, Texas. She returned to the United Kingdom shortly after, she began her own yogic path of teaching. Her students are encouraged to let go and have fun and connect with their inner rhythm and find santosha (contentment) within their own lives both on and off the mat.
In 2010, Vanessa and her husband James with their 4 year old son started living at the island of Cyprus. Her life has slowed down considerably since moving and she now have more time to devote to her family, self-practice, and meditation. She also continues to share her knowledge and passion for yoga through classes in the village where she lives.
In November 2013, she was fortunate enough to follow her dream of travelling to India to continue her studies. She spent 6 weeks at the Ajarya Yoga Academy, Rishikesh, immersing herself in the studies of Ashtanga yoga and the Patanjali's yoga sutras. India gave her the opportunity to discover yoga on a much deeper level, and to open up much more on her spiritual level. It was November 2014, she embarked on her 3rd teacher training with YogaWorks. Vanessa has successfully completed her 200hr with YogaWorks. She finally found her calling in the yoga world as she will continue to share the teaching of YogaWorks.
