During this retreat, you can stay in private or shared accommodations. The buildings are designed and constructed to ensure that the vegetation and birdlife is disturbed as little as possible. Additionally, to minimize ongoing greenhouse gas emissions, the natural cooling effect of the rainforest was incorporated into the designs so that air-conditioning is not required and more than adequate cooling is produced from cross ventilation and ceiling fans.

Deluxe canopy cabins

If you are interested in more creature comforts, then the deluxe canopy cabins may be for you. Of solid wooden construction, with ample, screened glass windows, the canopy cabins offer maximum protection from the elements, while still offering a close connection to the sights and sounds of the forest. Larger than the rainforest huts, these cabins are stylishly appointed with polished wooden floors, handmade natural timber furniture, and spectacular glass-walled bathrooms looking out high in the trees.

With a studio-style lounge and bedroom and a private, furnished veranda, the canopy cabins offer superior accommodation in an entirely natural environment.

Rainforest huts

Capturing the cool, green light of the rainforest, this accommodation is in secluded forest huts nestled in the rainforest canopy. A minimalist design maximizes the sights, sounds, and smells of the rainforest whilst giving some personal space to those creatures you may prefer not to sleep with.

Accessed by a boardwalk to protect the forest floor, the rainforest huts have no solid walls; instead the timber structure is screened on all four sides with weatherproof curtains able to be drawn for privacy and protection from adverse weather. Each hut has a small veranda, simple furnishings, and sleeps two in either double or twin occupancy.

Rainforest huts with alfresco ensuites

Elegant and rustic at the same time, these outside ensuites offer a convenient addition to the rainforest guts. A simple deck extends from the hut, while the natural foliage of the forest creates privacy. Gravity fed with fresh, cold water collected onsite, the ensuites are appointed with a shower, toilet, and basin fittings of quality and style.

Over the course of the week, you will experience morning meditation and pranayama, mid morning asana, free time in the afternoon, a late afternoon yoga practice, and an evening satsang or philosophical discussion.

Sample daily schedule

  • 06:30 Early morning pranayama and meditation
  • 08:30 Breakfast
  • 10:00 Asana focus; main physical work
  • 12:00 Lunch
  • 13:00 Free time for activities

Mickey Space

Mickey has been practicing yoga since 1995 and teaching professionally since 2007. Mickey’s practice started with Iyengar style, building a strong foundation in asana, pranayama, and meditation. Having lived for seven years in Thailand, Mickey undertook advanced training in India in Iyengar style and then studied Sivananda style along with Tai Chi and Chi Gong in Thailand.

In 2006, Mickey undertook his 900-hour teacher training at Gita International. Mickey has continued to undertake further training in various styles and with several inspiring internationally recognized teachers including Clive Sheridan, Donna Fahri, and AG Mohan and enjoys dipping into Vipassana retreats in the Thai Buddhist tradition.

Mickey is immersed in full time teaching and has taught all sorts of classes and styles, from Power Flow to Yin Yoga, corporate yoga to working with veterans in chair yoga, and playful children’s yoga. His style is eclectic due to his diverse experience and background, able to adopt the right kind of class for specific situations. He aims to incorporate all the aspects of yoga in a class and will challenge students physically, educate them anatomically, and inspire them spiritually, always with a sense of lightness, humor, and joy.

He has been taking students to deeper levels since 2010, having run several local and international retreats and having had the privilege of being invited to teach at several yoga and music festivals and events nationwide. Being a professional and passionate disc jockey for longer than he has taught yoga, Mickey also loves incorporating music into his classes, running his very popular Hatha groove workshop where he uses a disc jockey to lay down sacred beats creating quite a funky class!

Michelle Jayne

Michelle is a yoga facilitator, therapist, and coach. She says that the experience on the mat is similar to journal writing, it’s personal, insightful, and full of revelations, some you enjoy, acknowledge, and embrace, and others you tend to ignore, allowing them to build up and surprise you when illness arrives, nudging you to care for yourself in a deeper way.

Back in 2001, Michelle studied a Hatha teacher training course in Perth, Washington. Then, she returned to Melbourne in 2006 and began teaching in the fitness industry, and seemed to find her niche with the holistic, personal, and graceful form of yoga.

Some of her most significant moments on the mat as a student have included level one boot camp with Baron Baptiste, advanced teacher training with medicine woman Ana Forrest, online anatomy and physiology with Simon Borg Olivier, 500-hour teacher training including Yin yoga teacher training with Power Living under the leadership of the heart-warming Duncan Peak, yoga therapy graduate certificate with Leigh Blashki, and recently an immersion in the level two teacher training offerings of Jungle Yoga.

This retreat will take place at the Sanctuary Retreat at Mission Beach in Queensland, Australia. Sanctuary Retreat is a unique rainforest eco-lodge and yoga retreat. It’s an adventurous destination for the physically active that seek a natural environment as well as the creature comforts of life.

Specializing in locally grown fresh foods and excellent coffee to satisfy your base desires, Sanctuary cuisine caters to all taste buds, carnivores and vegetarians alike. With the juice bar, fresh muffins, and bar snacks available in addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the relaxed atmosphere and homemade, delicious flavors can be enjoyed all day.

At Sanctuary you can do as much or as little as you please. There are excellent local bush and beach walks. There are beautiful beaches for swimming or you might prefer to just lounge by the pool or in a hammock and read that book you’ve been meaning to get round to for months.

Crocodile spotting

This is a true Australian style trip. Take a boat up the Hull River at sunset and enjoy a light barbecue meal on the boat while spotting crocodiles and other creatures of the night.

Dare the dark

The Sanctuary guided night walk is a unique way to experience the rainforest and those creatures that you hear but rarely see. Book on the day before 17:00. Walks require a minimum number of participants to run, so to speak.

Fishing trips

A range of ocean and river trips are available in the surrounding areas of beauty. Full equipment and helpful hints are provided.

Kayaking

Sea kayaking is a great way to visit Dunk Island. Enjoy an hour and a half paddle, snorkel, and picnic on the island’s quiet Coconut beach, and then allow one of the friendly guides to take you on an interpretive walk through the rainforest before you paddle back.

Skydiving

Skydive and land on the beach. Experience free-fall and parachuting with stunning ocean and beach views, spot turtles, jumping fish, and rays.

Snorkeling and scuba diving

Snorkeling and diving on the Great Barrier Reef is just over an hours’ boat ride away. There are a number of operators in Mission Beach and you can be advised on the trip most appropriate for your requirements and be helped with booking and transport if required.

Visit Dunk Island

Dunk Island is a national park with island style coves and bays, fringing reef, and walking trails just three kilometers from Mission Beach. A water taxi makes regular crossings to Dunk Island.

Walks

There are many beautiful walks and national park trails in the area. Walking track maps of the whole Mission Beach area are available at reception for 40 AUD cents, while the getting around in Mission Beach information displayed near the entrance explains all of the walks close by.

White water rafting

Rafting on the grade four Tully River is a refreshing and exciting way to see the stunning Tully Gorge.

For an additional cost, the Sanctuary's massage therapists can provide you a range of relaxing massages from Swedish to deep tissue at the dedicated massage room. The cost is 75 AUD for 1 hour and 105 AUD for 90 minutes. You can also treat yourself to the ultimate in bodily pampering with an aromatherapy massage using pure essential oils leaving you floating and totally relaxed.

"Michele's retreat charged me up on so many different levels. I intensified my practice in an unexpected way because he constantly challenged me, but not to a point of pain. He stimulated my spiritual practice with readings and recordings that were secular and applicable. He worked individually with me in the group by correcting certain postures but also encouraged the group to work together in a connected conscious way. Michele's smile and gentle enthusiasm made me feel safe and willing to try things I wouldn't possibly do on my own or in another setting. Nature's backdrop, and because it was Spring, was just a magnificent inspiration to be quiet and soak up the environment with all of my senses. Thank you kindly for sharing your knowledge with me Michele."

"I try to keep a minimal public profile online - I’m reluctant to publicly put my name to anything online, especially something so personal. What you do is amazing, though. This is potentially life changing stuff. Thank you. What an amazing weekend! Namaste,"

"Michele is an awesome instructor. These classes are everything I look for in a yoga class. Not too serious, not just about the physical, while still being challenging enough to work up a sweat (if you want to), great dose of the spiritual and energetic, and the mindset of what yoga is in a practical way. I want more from a yoga class than just a work out, a stretching class, or a lecture, I want to leave feeling fabulous physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and I always leave his classes feeling like that. Part of the appeal is he goes off and does the great retreats with inspiring people in far flung locations, and I get to live a little of that by learning from what he has learned."
