If you are looking to experience "real" Ayurvedic medicine and treatments, Somatheeram Resort is the best place in the world. A small village in a paradise hill overlooking the ocean, Somatheeram offers various types of accommodations, including Kerala Houses, an independent round shaped hut. We stayed in a spacious "Kerala House" fully equipped with a double bed, a large bathroom with shower and clothes closet.Service is courteous, hotel area is beautifully landscaped full of coconut trees, flowers, "pure paradise". A staircase will take you to the swimming pool and to the beach, were you will be pampered with beach loungers and parasols. The treatment area is traditional, yoga and meditation are also offered. The variety of treatments, medicines and respective Ayurvedic food diet will rejuvenate you and keep you running for a full year.We asked for an air conditioning equipped Kerala House. We had our own house detached from others, small porch with a hammock for extra lazy evenings. This was our third trip to Somatheeram, you will want you next trip the moment you leave. Reservations well in advance are required. December to April good months. Many attractions nearby, don't miss visiting a house boat trip through the water canals. as well as spending a few days in Cochi (Cochin).
The position just above the temple on the cliff near the surf beach was inspiring as were the hardworking fishermen going out through the surf almost every day to set and pull nets. One of the most memorable things of my stay was the amazing range and quality of vegetarian meals. The massages and treatments were innovative and interesting.I really enjoyed the Yoga for beginners, as it was something I had never tried before. Losing weight to the lowest I had been for many years was an extra bonus, even though I ate almost everything in sight. The people both in the retreat and in the surrounding small shopping area became our friends. A great visit.
I travelled to Somatheeram on my own for 5 days. This is a really special place, but one that you have to have an open mind about. The Ayurveda clinic is very authentic, as were the lovely therapists. The doctors are good too - but probably not as informative as you would be used to, in a more western clinic. Nonetheless, it's a wonderful experience. The one thing to note about Somatheram is that this is not a regular resort, the focus here is Ayurveda, and everything comes second.Once you settle that in your mind and embrace what this place is all about - you will really appreciate how simple and natural your environment is. The most impressive thing about Somatheeram is the staff - they are just amazing. So sweet, personal, kind - will go out of their way for you, keep you company - they make all the difference in your day. The chef is great - I mentioned I love spicy food, and then before I knew it, I was receiving special meals from the kitchen from him that were extra spicy the way I like it.The views here are great. Beach is too rough to swim in. Pool is fine, clean and overlooks the sea. I would come back, but for me, 5 days is more than enough. It all depends on what you want out of your trip and how much therapy you need :) Thanks to the amazing staff for making everyday special. I will miss you!

The location and the place itself- beware of the steps if you are not fit. There are many (about 100) up and down to the beach. The support staff was great and I would go there again. There is a tiny pool which, given the heat and the ferocity of the sea, is a definite plus. Food fantastic. All in all, it was good value. The front desk is pretty much in a shamble and the staff there very unfriendly and incredibly unhelpful.
