Soma Yoga Institute has partnered with the Marsh Commons Co-housing Community to bring a variety of affordable housing options for program participants. The Marsh Commons facility is in downtown Arcata and a short 10 minute walk to the Om Shala Yoga Studio. It also sits adjacent to the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, home to over 300 bird species with 5 miles of walking and jogging paths amongst fresh and salt water marshes. The buildings of the Marsh Commons feature sustainable materials, including carpet from pop bottles, redwood from an old barn we tore down, reused lighting, flooring resawn from old mill buildings, recycled-newspaper insulation, sustainably harvested construction lumber, and recycled-plastic lumber for decking.
The dorm facility boasts a full kitchen, two full baths, large living room and a few game rooms. Students are welcome to "bring their own bedding" and sleep on the floor in a casual dormitory space shared with other students in the 200 hour Yoga Training (females only).
This program offers you in-depth skills to explore yoga as a vehicle for vibrant health, self-transformation, and personal empowerment. The curriculum includes a unique blend of alignment-based Vinyasa flow, a solid foundation in Hatha yoga, and 200 hours of instruction offered within a therapeutic framework. The instruction will cover a wide range of yoga techniques including yoga postures, anatomy, relaxation, breath awareness, pranayama, and meditations to calm the mind.
It also covers contemplation to transform limiting tendencies into life-affirming thought patterns and the application of clear principles of alignment to create safety, balance, and freedom in yoga poses. Students explore concepts from Ayurveda, Upanishads, Patanjali, and the chakra system as frameworks for the application of yoga as a journey towards radiant health and well-being.
The asana emphasis includes levels one and two alignments-based Vinyasa flow sequencing as well as gentler and restorative variations. You will be exposed to frameworks that inspire you to adapt the practices, awaken your creativity, and find your own authentic voice as a teacher. As a graduate of this program, you be empowered to teach a variety of yoga class types, including all levels of Vinyasa yoga alignment-based classes, yoga foundations which are senior, gentle, and restorative.
As this program is approved by Yoga Alliance, the graduates are eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as registered yoga teachers at the 200-hour level (RYT-200). The therapeutic perspective and curricular components of this program are based on Liz's registration as a certified yoga therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT). They are not derived from her status as an E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance Registry as it does not certify yoga therapists but solely yoga teachers.
This program is scheduled as a 22-day intensive program. While the program days are full, the activities of the day are kept diverse and active. They are a wonderful mix of digesting concepts intellectually, applying the concepts experientially, and diving into the practices of yoga. Care is taken within the program schedule to ensure that students have a healthy experience both physically and mentally. You will not be kept sedentary for too long. Physical activities and deep relaxation are built into the program everyday.
Evening programs may be scheduled periodically throughout the program and students may be assigned outside of class readings or presentations.
Trips to explore the Redwoods and California Coast are included in the program. In addition, there will be one full day off mid-way through the program plus one-half day off to explore the local area.
Liz Heffernan, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT, is a recognized international yoga teacher with over two decades of personal practice and 20 years of teaching. She has trained extensively in the Hatha yoga systems of Kripalu, Ashtanga, and Anusara and works as an integrative yoga therapist. Liz currently directs and leads yoga teacher training and workshops in worldwide locations, provides one-to-one mentoring for yoga teachers, instructs daily yoga classes, and offers private therapeutic sessions. Her teaching weaves together philosophy, creative sequencing, clear alignment, and mindful breathing.
Peggy Profant, E-RYT 500, and certified Anusara yoga teacher is on a lifelong path of yoga and taking its insightful teachings into all areas of her life. She first discovered the practice in 1980 and began teaching it to others in 1997. Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Anusara are the schools in which have influenced her practice. As one who lives courageously from her heart, she passionately teaches her classes with meaningful yogic themes while keeping a keen attention to alignment. In addition to yoga, being in nature and with her family is where she finds her deepest joy and peace.
Samantha began practicing yoga in 2000 and teaching yoga in 2002, receiving her first certification in Hatha and Kundalini with Karuna Yoga in Los Angeles. She went on to graduate from her 500 hour program in 2009. She became increasingly interested in the Therapeutic Style of Iyengar Yoga and studied Therapeutics with Judith Lasater, Leeann Carey and Russ Pfeiffer. Samantha is also a massage therapist, specializing in combining mindfulness with bodywork, earning her certification from one of the only 1000 hour programs in Los Angeles, in 2009.
This program will be held at Om Shala Yoga in Arcata, California.
During the program students will have time to enjoy majestic and ancient Redwood forests, wild and scenic rivers, dramatically gorgeous beaches and immerse into the local culture of Arcata. Trips will be planned to the nearby sites throughout the program so students may take in and experience the areas diverse natural beauty. Surfing, hiking, biking and rock climbing are just a few of the diverse activities which the local area offers.
OmShala Studio is located right in downtown, making it an ideal location to explore and soak in all the community has to offer. There are a variety of locally owned restaurants, many of which cater to various dietary restrictions, such as Wildflower Vegetarian Cafe and Bakery, as well as two natural and organic grocery stores, Arcata Natural Foods, and Wildberries Marketplace, which both serve ready-made food. Wildberries marketplace also features a community "box office" which sells tickets to local events and festivals. There are also many locally owned artisan stores and on Saturdays, Arcata holds a local agricultural farmers market, drawing members of the surrounding community, for fresh, organic goods, music and community.

Arcata has healthy, low cost options for eating just a walk away from Om Shala. A full kitchen is available at the Marsh Commons for cooking as well.
Northern California offers a variety of daily activities, including exploring and adventuring in the Redwood forests, rock climbing, swimming, hiking along rivers and coastline, and visits to the Arcata Wildlife Sanctuary.
Students in the program will have full access to bodywork services and use of the sauna at Om Shala Yoga in Arcata. All body workers at Om Shala have studied a variety of modalities and offer an eclectic combination of techniques depending on your needs. All therapists are highly skilled, licensed professionals. Sauna is complimentary for guests. Massage rates are 60 USD for 60 minutes, 90 USD for 90 minutes, and 120 USD for 120 minutes.
Please book your flight to arrive at Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Soma Yoga Institute will pick you up from the airport.
