You will be accommodated in the sharing dorms at Glenbarr Retreat Centre. Situated on the outskirts of Strathalbyn, Glenbarr is a heritage-listed homestead set on 35 acres of gently undulating farming land alongside the meandering Middle Creek. Its intimate and rustic feel is perfect for disconnecting and taking time for yourself while on meditation retreat. Glenbarr is located 45 minutes southwest of Adelaide, in the quiet rural countryside near Strathalbyn.

Glenbarr was originally a home for Scottish pioneers and was one of the first buildings in Strathalbyn built in 1842. The buildings are a unique insight to the lifestyle of the early pioneers in rural Australia.

Many of the original buildings are used by groups with modern accommodation and bathroom facilities to ensure a comfortable stay. You will be accommodated on sharing basis in twin rooms. There are separate rooms for men and women. Modern communal bathroom facilities are available.

Facilities are provided separately for males and females. The accommodation may be basic, but the views, space, and country air make up for it. This venue really gives you a chance to "disconnect" from your everyday world, and enjoy gorgeous countryside while immersing in your spiritual growth while on retreat. All rooms have heating, however in winter, you might wish to bring a wheat bag or hot water bottle for bed warming.

Please do not forget to bring your own linen including single sheet set or sleeping bag, blankets, pillow and pillowcase, towels, face wash, and soap. There are extra camp-style blankets available in bedrooms.

This retreat is not for the faint hearted. In this retreat, Skillful Mind combines deep meditation with intense personal coaching. You will have significant break through in your level of meditation. This retreat will provide:

  • Expert practical instruction on how to meditate to a deep level
  • Long periods of time each day in which to meditate
  • One-on-one coaching to delve deep into and resolve any emotional blocks that arise
  • Support for any problems that comes up in your practice
  • A peaceful remote venue with delicious home-cooked food each day
  • A room full of like-minded people all supporting one another with a joint effort to reach a deeper level
  • Everything you need to facilitate a huge transformation

Of course, Skillful Mind recognizes that each person has to confront what is in front of them in there own way. So, they will not push you but they will definitely support you in pushing yourself. What Skillful Mind can promise is that you will learn more about your mind in these six days than you have done in a long time.

Pre-requisites

For this retreat, you will have already been meditating for some time with a good understanding of meditation. It is also recommended that you should attend the Skillful Mind technique retreat and preferably the advanced retreat also. The most important pre-requisit, however, is that you are willing to put in effort. You should consider this retreat more as a personal transformation journey than a holiday.

Why a retreat?

A meditation retreat allows you to focus on understanding meditation in a supportive environment, free from day-to-day distractions, in the company of like-minded people. In this atmosphere, it is common for people to progress much faster than through weekly lessons, or on their own.

At Skillful Mind, they offer retreats to everyday people that need a little bit of space to work on increasing happiness and joy in their lives, not only for themselves, but also for those around them.

Benefits of meditation

Meditation offers many benefits for your body, mind, and spirit.

Physical benefits of meditation

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety
  • Decreases tension-related pain
  • Increases Serotonin production improving mood
  • Boosts immune system
  • Increases energy levels

Benefits of meditation on your mind

  • Decreases anxiety, negative emotions, trait anxiety, and neuroticism
  • Aids learning, memory, and self-realization
  • Improves attention and mindfulness
  • Stabilizes emotions
  • Increases creativity and happiness
  • Develops intuition
  • Gives clarity and peace of mind
  • Creates better focus
  • Reduces tension, anger, and frustration
  • And if done deeply enough, it is a path to a bliss that is beyond imagination

Spiritual benefits of meditation

The sense of peace, connectedness, and happiness opens the heart to enable you to live a contented and fulfilled life. Most spiritual traditions around the world have meditation, prayer, or at least self reflection as an important part of their practice. It makes sense that to get to know your spirituality better, you should spend time getting to know yourself better. A lesson that gets forgotten in the current fast-paced world one now lives in.

How to gain these benefits?

To experience these benefits, it is necessary to practice regularly. You can start with a few minutes every day, building up to ideally, around 20 minutes a day. You may be able to attend one of the Skillful Mind's refresh community classes in your local community, and to develop your meditation skills further, Skillful Mind offers weekend retreats throughout the year.
