Our single-gender dormitories are furnished with 3-4 beds and are available in various locations around the ashram. Their simplicity provides a perfect blend of comfort and serenity. These shared rooms with shared bathrooms allow you to experience ashram life with others. Bedding and towels are provided. You will be assigned a roommate if you register alone. One 8-bed room is available as well.
Swami Vishnudevananda was the first yogi from India to develop this kind of training program in the west, with the vision to not only develop successful yoga professionals but to also spread peace in the world through them. With over 40 years of experience and worldwide recognition, our teacher training course is a unique, profoundly transformative, and rewarding experience that is based on the ancient gurukula teaching system, which integrates the student's daily life into the yoga training.
This yoga certification course is recommended for yoga practitioners of all levels who aspire to learn how to become a yoga instructor, bring the joy of yoga to others, or deepen their own yoga practice. In this four-week immersion course, students live a yogic lifestyle while learning from advanced yoga practitioners in a well-rounded curriculum of yoga study. Graduates of the course receive internationally recognized certification.
The teacher training course is certified by the worldwide Yoga Alliance for the 200-hours standard for Registered Yoga Schools (RYS). During four intense weeks of ashram living, students will strengthen their own yoga practice through self-discipline and awareness of the nature of mind, body and spirit; and build a firm foundation from which to teach others naturally and with confidence.
Learn how to teach a 2-hour Sivananda yoga class while gaining versatile teaching skills including working for beginners, intermediate and advanced classes; explore different techniques to teach children, the elderly and prenatal yoga. Find greater flexibility and comfort in your personal practice of asanas (postures); discover how to energize the body and calm the mind through the practice of pranayama (breathing); maintain physical and mental purity through the practice of kriyas (cleansing); learn about yogic diet and nutrition; human anatomy and physiology.
Learn about different meditation techniques, theory and the practice of mantra repetition. Practice selfless service. Study the timeless teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and other ancient yogic texts, yoga philosophy and yoga psychology. Discover how everything you need to be a better you is already within you. There are no pre-requisites for this training; yoga is for everyone!
A normal day at the ashram will look like this:
06:00 - 07:45: Morning satsang (meditation, chanting, and lecture; or silent walk)
08:00 - 10:00: Asana & pranayama class
10:45 - 11:45: Karma yoga
12:00 - 13:00: Bhagavad gita / chanting class
13:00 - 14:00: Break or karma yoga
14:00 - 16:00: Main lecture (yoga philosophy and psychology or anatomy and physiology)
16:00 - 18:00: Teaching methods of asana & pranayama
19:00 - 20:00: Free time or karma yoga
20:00 - 22:00: Evening satsang
Students enjoy special programs, festivals, concerts and symposiums that are offered during evening satsangs.
There is one weekly day off. During the day off students are required to attend morning and evening satsangs and to perform their Karma Yoga only. During their free time, students are welcome to enjoy the services of the Well Being Center or the daily workshops offered at the ashram; students can also explore the Ashram's vicinity or take the time to rest on the beach or in the garden.
Attendance at all activities is mandatory. Changes in the program may occur from time.
The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat is located across the bay from Nassau, Bahamas, on one of the finest beaches in the world. It is truly an island paradise and a sanctuary of peace and natural beauty. Two buffet-style lacto-vegetarian meals are served daily. They are prepared with love and care according to Yogic dietary principles. Nourish your body with vegetable, grain and bean dishes or enjoy one of our hearty soups. Brunch also includes delicious fruit, homemade granola, or freshly made yogurt. Raw fixings to make your own salad are offered at both meals, as well as our own baked bread.
Enjoy your meal by the ocean, in the tropical gardens or in the main dining area amongst other Yogis and vacationers. You are also welcome to relax with a cup of our daily selected herbal tea.

End the day with Satsang
Fly directly to Nassau International Airport (please contact your local Bahamian Consulate to verify if you require a visa to enter the Bahamas). After collecting your luggage and passing through customs, call the ashram to let us know that you are on your way. Take a taxi to our dock, located at Elizabeth on Bay Marketplace and Marina.
Our boat will pick you up from the dock (in accordance with boat schedule during day time, and upon your arrival for late night arrival) and bring you to the ashram (an easy five-minute boat ride).
