Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm is the ideal place to come relax, rejuvenate, and detoxify from your daily life. This weekend provides an opportunity to receive guidance and nurturing from specialists trained in the ancient healing science of Ayurveda in the form of body treatments, consultations, and daily workshops. You will practice yoga asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing), and meditation twice a day and attend daily workshops on Ayurveda and health.

Swami Vishnudevananda founded this ashram in 1971. The ashram provides a residential setting where spiritual practitioners of all levels can deepen their practice through the study of classical yoga, meditation, and vedanta.

Deluxe shanti cabins and the newer siva cabins are available. Five have been built with more renovations of the standard cabins on the way. These cabins are furnished, insulated, and include private bathrooms. Options for single, double, or family occupancy are available.

Please note that the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm is a classical monastic yoga community and retreat. By agreeing this ashram to be your stay, you agree to abide the rules of the ashram. Brahamacharya (abstinence) is observed here. This means that Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm maintains separate accommodations for men and women. Exceptions are made for married couples, couples in long term relationships (at least three years or more together), and for families staying together in the same cabin. No additional unrelated guests are allowed in these mixed gender accommodations.

Tent

There are deck platforms designated for tenting. You can bring your own tent and camp on the land. Sleep closer to nature in the fresh and open air. The cost is 50 USD per night per person.

Om cabins

Om cabins are pleasant and simple lodging which can be booked as single, double, or dormitory-style for four persons (with 2 bunk beds). The cabins are placed in a peaceful and tranquil setting, on a gentle hillside overlooking the pond and surrounded by the natural beauty of the ashram. Each cabin is named for a different virtue, such as happiness or contentment. Each cabin is furnished with a dresser, desk, night stand, ceiling fan, and propane heater. Om cabin guests share a nearby bath house.

Siva cabins

Siva cabins nestled at the base of Siva Temple Hill and offering a beautiful view of the valley these five cabins are the newest accommodations. The cabins feature an outdoor porch, bamboo wood flooring, and are built with high grade materials. They can be booked for either single or double occupancy. The cabins are furnished with a side table, dresser, and propane heater, each cabin has a private bathroom, including shower.

Deluxe Shanti cabins

50% larger than the siva cabins and located close to the central yoga halls, these extremely comfortable, spacious cabins are tastefully furnished and decorated and let you watch the deer wander by from the front porch with sun shade. For your comfort, an air conditioner, propane heater, and ceiling fan are provided. Furnishings include a desk, chairs, dresser, wardrobe, and a sitting area. A small refrigerator, dishes, and cutlery are provided. Options for single, double, or triple occupancy are available. The shanti cabins include private bathrooms with showers.

Ayurvedic consultation

Discover your own personal constitution and learn the basic tools to keep your body, mind, and spirit in balance through diet, lifestyle, and other tools for healthy living. Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm will determine what kinds of activities and changes in your lifestyle that can help you restore balance. This consultation includes detailed history intake, pulse and tongue analysis, as well as diet and lifestyle evaluation.

Workshop

The talks that will be given revolve around topics, such as Ayurvedic constitution, signs of imbalance and balancing therapies, proper digestion guidelines to healthy eating, Ayurvedic lifestyle, as well as seasonal and daily routines.

Daily schedule

To maintain the purity and spiritual purpose of the ashram, Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm ask that all guests and residents follow the schedule of events of the daily program. Attendance at all satsangs and at least one yoga class is required. Please ask for guidance from the yoga teachers or the resident swami to facilitate your adaptation to the daily schedule so that you can more easily understand the principles and the philosophy behind the practice. Reception staff will guide you on the do's and dont's while at the ashram.

You are encouraged to arrive by 4 p.m. on the first day so that you can make the most out of the afternoon by joining the other participants for the asana class and dinner. Below is the daily schedule for this retreat.

Karma yoga

Karma yoga is the yoga of selfless service. This is completely voluntarily and optional. As part of the ashram experience, all visitors are encouraged to join the staff (all non-paid volunteers) in this service during the daily scheduled Karma yoga hour.

You will be taught by certified Ayurvedic therapies and yoga teachers. The resident teachers and swamis lead an integral yogic and dedicated life, full time without remuneration, with the sole goal to improve themselves by the practice of yoga and to share with others the teachings.

Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm is located near Grass Valley, California. The ashram is situated in 80-acre land in the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada Mountain range at an elevation of 2000 feet. The historic gold mining towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City are nearby. The hills that make up the ashram land are populated by oaks and pines. The beautiful rivers of Yuba, Bear, and American are nearby. The river offers wonderful hikes along the gorges. In addition, Tahoe Lake is not far away to the east.

Two buffet style vegetarian meals will be prepared according to yogic and Ayurvedic dietary principles are served daily. Meat, fish, fowl, eggs, garlic, onions, and caffeinated beverages will not be included in the menu.

Ayurvedic body treatment

This is a beautifully relaxing and luxurious full body treatment. The treatment includes abhyanga (herbal oil massage) followed by shirodhara which is a soothing and steady stream of herbal oil poured on to the forehead directly over the third eye that will calm and purify your mind. The last is swedhana which is a full-body herbal steam treatment that helps the oil and herbs penetrate the body, nourishing the skin, and removing toxins. Treatments are an additional cost outside of the package.

Driving directions from the south or west

  • Take the Interstate 80 to Auburn and exit at Highway 49 north towards Grass Valley.
  • Go 11 miles to Wolf Road (signal light) and turn left.
  • Go 1.8 miles and turn right on Duggans Road.
  • Go two miles to the end of the road and turn left on Lime Kiln Road.
  • Go 2.4 miles until the road becomes McCourtney (continue straight and do not turn left).
  • Continue on 1.2 miles and turn left on Ballantree Lane at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm sign.
  • Go almost one mile to the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm driveway, marked by a big sign.

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Sacramento International Airport (SMF).

Arrival by shuttle

There is also a super shuttle available if you would like a direct ride to the ashram or to Auburn.

Arrival by train

You can book a train or bus service from San Francisco to Auburn station and they will have one of their staff pick you up there to bring you to the ashram. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) departs from San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Travel on BART to Richmond Station and transfer there to the Amtrak Station. From there, continue on Amtrak to Auburn Station.

You may also book a train or bus service from Sacramento to Auburn Station. You may take the airport shuttle to the Amtrak Station in Sacramento and transfer there. Please notice Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm at least one day ahead of your travel and advise your plans so that they may arrange to meet you when you arrive in Auburn.

    "I have been to Sivananda Yoga farm many times on personal trips. This last time, I was there to attend and speak at a Jyotish conference. As always, it is a greatly uplifting experience.     "So good! I love the Sivananda Yoga Farm. After my first visit to the farm in December 2014, it has changed my life. I really enjoy the pure energy that is encapsulated and the sincerity of all the staff and guests. Most people come to the Yoga Farm with intention. It's not a place that someone usually stumbles upon and decides to go to. This makes the entire experience very enriching as the topic of discussion are usually more spiritual and deep. I liked it so much. I recently completed my month long yoga teacher training at the ashram. Again, the spiritual focused nature and intention of the ashram gave me an experience that would've been hard to replicate elsewhere. Lastly, I love the fact that this place is just in California. People don't have to travel to Peru or India to have a deep spiritual experience in a community of like-minded people. Every honest seeker is welcome here!"

    "If you want to find a structured retreat away from civilization, then Sivananda Yoga Farm is for you. It's about three hours north east of San Francisco and it's very relaxed and chill. The retreat has a set schedule that includes morning mediation, yoga, talks, and chanting. Of course, all the food is locally grown, organic, vegan, and very delicious. If you need to get away for a weekend or want to come here during one of the retreat events, then this place is for you. I would highly recommend staying in the newer Shanti cabins as they are very clean and also very cozy. Also, the talks and meditations are very beneficial. I would love to come back at some point during the summer when we can do yoga on the outside deck overlooking the pond."

    "I've been with my family to this ashram a couple of times over the past few years. It is truly a serene place. It's an ashram in true sense not a retreat. All volunteers are very genuine, caring, and really love their work. You have to help out with karma yoga which can include cleaning the kitchen, restrooms, etc. Believe it or not, you will love it. There is something great and peaceful about this place. This is very tough to explain. It has to be experienced."

    "I spent a week at the Yoga Farm in January 2015 for a meditation for beginners workshop. While the workshop was for beginners, I'd suggest that it is best enjoyed by those with prior yoga experience. The farm is beautiful. The staff was gracious and genuinely friendly. I learned a lot about yoga, meditation, and myself. Staying longer than a couple days has many advantages. I got used to the schedule, which is filled with satsang, asana practice, karma yoga, meals, etc. I had a chance to hike the property and see the llamas and goats. More importantly, I was able to connect with more of the staff residing at the farm. As happy as I felt by the end of my visit, I was also sad to leave. I look forward to heading back with my wife, who I know would love it even more than I did."
