Whether you are a complete beginner or an intermediate surfer looking for some tips to improve your surfing, we provide personal, caring, and professional surf lessons adapting the teaching technics to each individual. With relatively small groups, each student will have enough attention and optimal learning experience.

Classes are taught by experienced surfers and certified surf Instructors (ISA) who teach surfing in a safe and responsible manner while ensuring that you have the best time of your life catching waves.

Each surf lesson takes two hours. On the first lesson, the surf instructor implements a short briefing, giving you a proper introduction to the sport of surfing and the science behind it, including a detailed explanation of safety measures that have to be followed.

In a surf program for a week you will also get photos. Last but not least, you will receive the appropriate equipment that fits your needs and level of surfing. We have a wide range of surfboards and wetsuits at your disposal.

Our surf teachers have been introducing beginner surfers to the sport of surfing for close to 20 years. Through its long experience, we have refined our teachings and offer the best beginner courses available anywhere. The multi-day beginner courses are available for everyone.

What you will learn during your surf lessons are the following:

  • Standing on a surfboard and riding waves
  • How to position yourself correctly on the board
  • How to paddle
  • How to stand correctly
  • Technical correction - the surfer’s stance
  • How to keep your speed when riding waves
  • How to catch unbroken waves
  • How to take the drop
  • How to turn
  • How to ride across the waves
  • Etiquette
  • How to read the beach for the best waves, rips and currents
  • How to get started with the right board on your own

Yoga classes

The yoga practice will be based on Vinyasa flow and Hatha yoga. Vinyasa flow combines the breath with the body’s natural ability for movement to create a flowing, dance like practice, which burns away toxins in the body and clears the mind.

The Hatha yoga’s aspect of the practice is focused on the foundation of the asanas, or yogic postures, and will allow you to understand the dynamics of your body and to feel the proper alignment within each asana. You will be doing yoga once a day. Our yoga lessons are mainly designed as a complement to surf lessons.

Peniche is known as the wave capital in Portugal, due to its exclusive geography, providing the best surfing conditions for more than 300 days per year. This made Peniche widely known for its unique waves as it gave the name to the beach "Supertubos" and Lagide, Baleal. These facts and more led ASP in 2009 to establish one of the World Tour of Surfing stage's here and it's also the proscenium to the Rip Curl Pro Peniche.

Trip to Berlengas

The Berlenga Nature Reserve is a unique place due to its transparent sea and underwater treasures. It is a marine reserve and has been classified by the Council of Europe as a "Biosphere Reserve". The archipelago consists of a large island, Berlenga Grande, and some small granite islands and rocks (Estelas and Farilhões), which are situated some 7 miles off the headland of Cabo Carvoeiro to the north-west of Peniche.

The island of Berlenga Grande can be seen from the mainland when there is no sea mist. Here, you will find endemic species of flora, as well as one of the preferred nesting sites for sea birds.

Built on a rock adjacent to the Berlenga Island and connected to it by a small bridge, there stands the Forte de São João Baptista, a Manueline military fortress built in 1502. The island’s tiny beaches with their clear blue sea are very beautiful and ideal for swimming and diving.

Access to the island is by boat, with departures from Peniche harbor. It takes roughly 30 minutes to reach Berlenga Grande. There is also a restaurant on the island.

Very fun Surfing Trip with excellent value for money

CONS Cons: There's no supermarket or restaurants directly at the location of the lodge. The sharks lodge itself has a Bar where you can get some sandwiches or a salad, but that's it. It is just a 10-15 minute walk to Peniche though.

PROS Pros: The Surfing and Yoga lessons were very good and fun! The whole sharks lodge team is just lovely and I would definitely recommend staying there. Me and my friend had an awesome time!

PROS Pros: Shark lodge team are very welcoming and full of good vibes. The room and the hotel was very clean and I loved the flexibility in the schedules.

"A fantastic experience. The owner has done a wonderful job to create this Hidden Gem in Peniche. A quiet yet beautiful location with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I liked the flexibility of the surfing / yoga schedule which allowed you to pick/ choose when you'd like to participate. I loved that everyone that stayed/ worked there were all from different countries but all had a love for surfing. The surfing instructor was fantastic for all levels of skill and the beach was ideal for learning. There were also many other beaches for experienced surfers. Breakfast was included and was delicious! The resturant on site "Kuk resturante" was amazing!! The chef was fantastic and creative with fresh foods/herbs and spices.. And so so accommodating to guests...Such great value for money also. I had only planned on staying a few nights but immediately extended my stay. Highly recommend" website, edited

"First of all, surfers bay Peniche should NOT advertise nor sell itself as a yoga retreat! This is false information. The yoga is extremely basic in a hall of old worn out mats with poles from the previous pole dancing club, most gyms have more professional yoga. The breakfast is not to that of a retreat standard (basic yoghurts some tinned fruit and toast)."

"The environment and setting is also not to that of a retreat. It is a used hostel for surfers, to come and go to the beach. There is no group interaction or put on events, it is purely a surfers bed and breakfast. If you were to come alone, you would have little interaction with other guests."

"The surf lessons are again very basic with brief instructions given and mostly left to your own devices. However, Carlos the main instructor does give instructor advice when asked for, and provides a comforting and enjoyable surfing experience, providing you with a valued customer feeling. However, this cannot be said for the surfer’s bay Peniche retreat/hostel or bed and breakfast (however it likes to idenitify itself). The reception staff are slow and clueless, asking for towels, or if the surf lesson is running or even a bike lock can confuse them, common answer being “I don’t know”."

"Which as a whole summarising the whole of surfer’s bay Peniche, is it a yoga retreat, a hostel or a surfers Bed and Breakfast? The staff quiet simply do not know." website, edited

  • Review by Lexsy

"Hello,I recently booked a trip with what I thought was a yoga retreat on your site. Surfer's Bay Peniche is on a yoga retreats website, yet it is not a yoga retreat. It is a surf hostel. This company is a fraud and should not be on a yoga retreats site. They assured me that I could take yoga classes in place of surfing and that they would discount me for not surfing. We had extensive talks and email exchanges about this. They were dishonest with their information. Instead, they charged my card $312.09 US dollars for 2 nights and ONE yoga class. There was only 1 yoga class per day -which is not what a yoga retreat is supposed to provide, yet they failed to mention this to me when I asked numerous questions about the yoga classes. The yoga teacher is actually the cleaning lady. The one yoga class I took was horrible. The cleaning lady, who also acted as "yoga teacher" had no idea what she was doing - there was no warm up, she just went right into poses which can harm the body. I have been practicing yoga for many years and some of the poses she was doing were completely wrong. The one restaurant onsite has disgusting food, 2 other females from Amsterdam besides myself became extremely ill after eating there.Additionally, you must share a room with 7 other strangers which I was not told about before I booked. There is absolutely nothing to do, no retreat schedule, and as far as sleeping, it will not happen, as there is loud partying all night. Yoga retreats are supposed to relaxing. They ripped me off, and refused to refund. Severine, a business partner there, said she was "too busy" to refund me for the nights and services I did not receive...not too busy to take my money though. Additionally the charge on my card says Neptune Warriors, not Surfer's Bay Peniche. I am certain that the 7 good reviews are either from friends, family, or staff. This place is a fraud. I have filed a complaint with the international travel government. They gave me a confirmation number of 74737984. As an American traveling to Portugal for the first time this was a horrible experience. Please help me to get a refund for the nights I did not stay and services I did not receive. And PLEASE take Surfer's Bay Peniche off of this yoga retreats website. i will never book with this site again. This was a horrible experience that I thought was going to be relaxing and enjoyable.Instead i was ripped off."

  • Review by Response by Paulo Barbosa (General Manager)

"Hi Lexsy, thank you for your feedback. We always appreciate people taking time to review our retreat."

"In regards to our business model: In any place in our website we say we are a yoga only retreat. We do have more surf lessons than yoga, because that's what the majority of guests wants. The fact of yoga not showing up in the name also is kind of funny I would say, Peniche Surfers Bay?"

"Why would you choose to call us a fraud only after leaving, saying you had family problems, it's still a mistery for us. Actually that was the only reason that made Severine said we would refund you the days you were not going to stay. As you must know, our booking policies on the website say that you can get a refund up to 3 days before the start of the booking, not after."

"We said you could have only yoga classes in the activity package price (cheaper), since you were staying enough time to have all the booked lessons. Actually if you remember correctly, we do not charge cards. Guests pay at our portable debit machine, which involves writing a secret code. For sure you must have all the extensive emails about this, since they are not in our server."

"As you would know if you surfed, surfing creates an environment that makes people happy and feel that they belong to a special group of persons, with great friendships arising in a short time. Our ''cleaning lady'', surfed some months ago with us and enjoyed it so much that she decided to take some time off her busy schedule as a TV actress and yoga teacher, with international experience, just to surf some more with us and help in whatever was needed while she was here. Some days she helped us clean, yes, and we value a lot people like that. You can check her out at:"

"For sure we will share your complaint regarding the restaurant with our Chef, Mauritti, which was on TV last year 16 times and trains staff in several 4 and 5 stars hotels. He is my friend and just came to help us start. Hope sincerely you didn't suffer a lot, like that time I went to Africa...."

"In regards to shared room: I apologise for our English, we will try to lookup a better word than 'Girls Dormitory' to describe the room in the future."

"Severine told you on the phone that she would refund you as soon she had some time, which she couldn't find for a couple of weeks ( that she asked you for), since we were so busy and refunds require the general manager, me, Paulo. You refused, saying you would sent the American government after her. Hope it's not a drone."

"Yes, Neptune Warriors bought Surfers Bay in July. We kept the name for the summer so it would not confuse people that had booked already."

"In regards to the other reviews: Not sure whether the 7 good reviews are either from our friends, family, or staff. Since most of us, or family, can't write good."

"Lexsy, you really seemed like a nice person, we all here can see you are very unhappy with our service and your expectations of a good, relaxing holiday. We sincerely offer you, not a refund (since now it seems we will go trough the legal system, and that works both ways) but a week back here with us, for FREE, with yoga and one surf lesson a day. But you have to surf... it seems yoga does not make you happy."

    "Sincerely, "

"Can not be more positive about this place. Everything was clean, neat and works! Pool kept incredibly clean and the water so clear. Rooms all great, hardly spent any time in them anyway, surfing equipment all fairly new and plenty of sizes. All the staff was great. There was nothing too much trouble right down to George in the restaurant menu just for us! Great surf instruction with small group sizes. Had a great family vacation with our 14, 19 and 21-year-old children. Would definitely go back."

I would surfers or anyone looking for a relaxing way to recommend this part of Portugal to experience."
