Program

Yoga

The term yoga is based on the Sanskrit root word "Yuj" which means "unite" or "join" and was used to refer to the union of oneness and the path to it.

For Shamballah Retreats, yoga is a disciplined design to join together the individual with the divine, using mental and physical practices that merge their mundane and spiritual lives. All their practices have in mind the ultimate goal of yoga:

"Nirvana" or "samadhi", which is the state of being in union with all, realizing the sacredness in all aspects of life.

This goal is achieved by passing through various steps of expanding states of consciousness and the chakras represent these steps. For this reason, Shamballah Retreats decided to focus more deeply on this energy work along with their yoga classes. Shamballah Retreats can say that yoga is a practice of evolution because it results in personal growth and transformation. One of the yoga classical definitions is: "to achieve something not able to be reached before." It is about self-realization by merging the body with the mind and the mind with our divine soul.

In Shamballah Retreats' yoga classes, you practice the asanas (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing technics) to help the body to be stronger, more flexible, balanced, healthy, and relaxed.

When you work with the body, the mind is also working and the goal is to create a bond between body and mind and to be more aware of what means to be grounded here in the body and in this present moment. As the mind gets more clear and calm it is easier to expand into a state of peacefulness and feel at home in your body and in this world.

The morning class is more dynamic based on Vinyasa style, a soft, gentle, and smooth flow from pose to pose in synchronization with the breath. You practice different variations of sun salutations where the key is to connect poses with the breath and with the flow of the moment.

The evening class is a more relaxed, modified, traditional Hatha yoga mixed with restorative and Yin yoga styles and involves seated, supine and prone poses, using sometimes props to help students to hold postures longer while focusing on more passive stretching and deeper relaxation. This class's main goal is to slow the nervous system and still the mind in order to release the tension from the fascia and to heal the negative effects of stress.

Both methods are suitable for all levels addressing the needs and personal conditions of each practitioner, always respecting each one's individual rhythm. These methods are made to help practitioners achieve the goals of greater health and general well being through deeper self-awareness.

Meditation

Meditation can positively influence biological processes that are essential to physical and mental health, especially if practiced regularly. In the sessions, you will share simple exercises yet very profound when practiced frequently. These meditations can easily be done by anyone who is interested in enjoying greater balance, peace, clarity of mind, and happiness.

Some of the practices include breathing exercises, activation of important glands for the equilibrium of our being, deep relaxation, and other more active meditations. We live in a fast-paced, intense life, where everyone is seeking more joy, more money, better relationships, better health, a greater sense of purpose, the list goes on.

In our quest for a happier life, we ask many questions, we want to know the answers and we find many tools that we apply in our daily lives, hoping these will be the solution to our problems. But all too often the tools become obsolete and dull after some time.

Meditation is an awareness tool, which unlike others always brings us to a deeper understanding of life. If practiced on a regular basis it brings tremendous benefits to your body, mind, and emotions as it works directly with the brain, its neuron connectors, the bloodstream, and other organs. When you relax your body and mind you allow yourself to come back to the natural state of wellbeing and healing.

Guided walks

With its views and spectacular coastal scenery, Sintra's National Park is ideal for long walks of exploration and close contact with nature's beauty. Walking is a great aerobic exercise for lungs, heart, and circulation, it can be a gentle yet powerful workout to strengthen the whole body and this is the focus for this guided walk.

This hike is medium level and takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes, it goes along the most scenic part of the beautiful coast and it ends up on a beach where you will have lunch and can see dinosaur footprints!

Retreat location

With an extensive beach along the cliffs, Praia da Aguda is wild and beautiful the access is for the adventurous ones but beauty and tranquility await at the end of the stairs. Along the coast, two kilometers each way, you will find Magoito beach and Azenhas do Mar, a beautiful and awe-inspiring village perched on the cliffs. This location is ideal for long walks of exploration and close contact with nature´s beauty.
