ATV peninsula tours: There is no better way to explore the peninsula then on an ATV or Quad as we call them. Great for all day getaways or just to run down to the market, Quads are the preferred mode of transportation for most of the locals. There are several Quad rental shops in Santa Teresa and we will happily line one up to be delivered for you.

Cabo Blanco nature reserve tour: Cabo Blanco is Costa Ricas oldest nature preserve. Just 30 minutes away, this is a very special place to go for a hike.

Horseback riding: Spend an afternoon riding on our local beach.

Massage: We can schedule a relaxing massage in the comfort of your villa. Our experienced massage therapists can perform a variety of therapeutic massages to meet your taste, including deep tissue, Swedish, relaxation, or sports massage.

Sailing: There is a new sailboat in town that will take you on a half or full day tour to enjoy the breathtaking views of southern Nicoya from a new perspective, the ocean.

Snorkeling: Shaka Beach Retreat has snorkeling gear available for your use during a guided tour to the local tide pools. Cabuya island is well known for its abundance of fish and there are several tidal pools and rock lagoons around Manzanillo worth exploring. We can also set you up with an all day boat excursion to Tortuga Island if desired.

Spa: Santa Teresa is home to several spas, offering luxurious ocean front services such as facials and body scrubs.

Sport fishing: There are 2 locations that you can take off from, Mal Pais and Montezuma. The boats can hold up to 4 people with 2 people fishing at a time. The waters here are heavy with Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Spanish Mackerel, Snapper, Sea Bass and Dorado.

Surfing: We have many beach breaks in the Playa Hermosa and Santa Teresa area for surfers of all levels.

Waterfall, canopy and zip line tours: The tour in Montezuma takes around 4 hours and is a ton of fun. After a brief introduction and some training, you harness up and take off. After 3 or 4 zip lines, you will hike down to the river and get to play in the waterfalls before taking 3 more zip lines. This is a great afternoon tour so bring your camera.

"This was without fail THE BEST EXPERIENCE I’ve ever had! We woke up at 5am every morning to the best Costa Rican coffee and their chef Jose cooking up a storm. The surf instructors are to die for – literally I was standing up after my first try! Mike (one of the staff members) is unbelievable – he showed us some of the coolest spots in the area (where the locals go) and always had great suggestions for things to do. I am sad that my trip only lasted 10 days and I will 100% be going back! The villas are clean, the location is safe and the beach is stunning… plus the monkeys are insane! Going to Shaka was honestly the best decision I’ve ever made and I would highly recommend it to anyone."

"Firstly I don't normally write reviews but Shaka truly is a special place that deserves every good review it gets. Mike and his Shaka family are truly awesome. They made us feel so very welcome and looked after us for so well for the week we spent there. The surf instruction was excellent, who thought after surfing 15+ years you can still lean new things! My son's surfing was taken to a new level and he's already talking about a return trip. Yoga Steve provided us with midday good vibes enjoyed by all especially my daughter who continues to practice her head stands. Just go you won't be disappointed."

"An amazing place with an amazing team of people. Mike, Cat, and our surf instructor Danny helped make it one of the most memorable trips my wife and I have taken. Surf and food were great and our villa was the perfect balance of charm, tropical and Costa Rica. "

"We ended up getting in a car accident after our trip, but the team offered their time and resources to help us navigate the local process. Had it happened during the trip, I would have been grateful, but the fact that they involved their attorney and used their time to help us out after we'd left them demonstrates the way that they take care of their own. "

"Rootsy adventure! Loved it - like a dream. Hope to go back again soon,"

"This review could be a novella, but I'll try to keep it short and focus on 3 main points:"

      "Point #1: Waves for days."

"1-2 footers break after a quick paddle out for beginners or those sharpening basic skills. I took a few lessons in Oahu years ago, but spent a lot of time here in the whitewash."

"2-4 footers break out the back, which can be hard to get to depending on the conditions, your conditioning, the volume of water and time in between sets. I got out the back on my last day and it was absolutely unforgettable. I was sitting on my board and staring at the green shoreline — surrounded by sunshine and the bluest water."

"Point #2: Not all crews are created equally."

"Frank was awesome getting my week set up and answering a thousand questions. Mike is clutch and the go-to for anything you need onsite — especially if you get lost on your ATV, twice. Michelle, my surf instructor, taught me way more than I learned at previous lessons. I took notes at the end of each day. Cat handled all the loose ends and makes a killer rum margarita. Yoga Steve was righteous on the mat and a fun wingman. Jose's fried okra made me want to be a better man. Maria keeps it clean. Carlos cuts grass with a machete. Enough said."

"Point #3: A solo trip above all others."

"I went solo here to improve my surfing abilities and experience Costa Rica. I found it easy to fly into SJO, Tambor and then a cab to Shaka. The villas are in excellent condition. I slept like a baby here. There were about 5 guests when I arrived and then it slowly dwindled to just me for my last few days. At first it was a slight bummer after having fun with the other travelers, but in the end I probably had the best time hanging with the crew, checking out a few bars, eating out and just shooting the breeze."

"Pro-tips: a) rent an ATV more than once because there's so much to see along the coast. b) don’t have high expectations of the Montezuma waterfalls and get ready to hike on jagged rocks. c) Vida likes bacon, but don’t feed her."

"I stayed as a solo traveller at Shaka for a week March 2016 and it far exceeded my expectations! The entire staff from the owners to the cook, to the surf instructors is so genuine and dedicated, they make you feel like a part of their family. I did yoga every day, surfed almost every day, and enjoyed healthy vegetarian meals all the while. They are willing to cater to any dietary needs and are very health conscious here which I totally appreciate. "

"It was peaceful, fun, comfortable and homey. You will fall in love with the people and the lifestyle here. Shaka has created something very special in Costa Rica."

"I spent ten days at Shaka Surf in August 2015 as part of a trip around Central America. It was the highlight of the trip. The location, north of the main Santa Teresa dustbowl, is excellent - more of a relaxed community vibe. The food was great too, prepared by the in-house chef, who was a super-nice guy. The rooms were nice, clean and comfortable with delicious air-con that I definitely missed at other places on my trip. The grounds are lovely too, with various wildlife including regular howler monkey visits."

"The best part for me was the community at Shaka. Mike, the owner, is both highly skilled at, and extremely dedicated to, making sure everyone feels welcome and has a good time. I think I was particularly lucky with the others staying at the same time as me, we really hit it off and every meal was hilarious. Mike was also on-point with recommendations for places to eat/check out around the area."

"I did not take surf lessons because I already surf but I did listen in on a few of the pointers given to those taking lessons and, as a surfer, I found them to be really intelligent and carefully crafted to the individual's skill level. The instructors here are the best I've seen anywhere and I would unreservedly recommend it as a place to learn to surf."

"For those that already surf, the local beach, playa Hermosa, is basically a beach break that gets pretty hollow on low tide but is a lot more friendly at high tide. Banks seemed to move around a bit more than other beachies I've surfed, though there was a consistent left running off a reef at one end. I was told there is a similar right down the other end of the beach but it didn't work while I was there. "

"All up, my only regret was that I wasn't able to stay longer!"

"There are many wonderful things to say about Shaka! I am so grateful to the whole staff for creating a perfect week for me and my husband. Our room was beautiful, spacious, and clean, and we enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks in the afternoon. Chef Jose prepared delicious, healthy meals to sustain us through the week of activity (I'm still dreaming of the gallo pinto and those perfect avocados). Although it was my first time surfing, I was able to stand up and ride waves on the first day. The surf instruction was excellent and made me feel very safe in the water. For personal reasons, I wasn't able to surf every day, but owner Mike was so accommodating; he went out and found a boogie board for me so that I could still have a great time in the ocean. Mike really went above and beyond to make sure we had an awesome week. I had several meaningful conversations with Megan, the yoga instructor, and really enjoyed her restorative yoga classes. People keep asking "What was your favorite part about your trip?" and it's so difficult to answer! I just keep thinking about how Shaka brings people together from all over the world to share a common love for the ocean and being immersed in nature. Shaka has a certain magic, and it was so much more than just a typical beach vacation!"

"My family and I spent six nights at this amazing resort learning to surf and exploring the area. Food was awesome - specially prepared by a Chef Jose - and served up always with a big smile. Owner Mike was always on property making sure everything was clean and neat. Our cabins were roomy, comfortable and the air conditioning was much appreciated. They were cleaned each day, and the maid service was over the top. Tucked in the midst of a rainforest, this little oasis provides all the comforts of home that a jungle can provide. The yoga instructor, Megan, was super and provided guidance for those of us who were beginners - and still met the needs of the advanced participants. Then the beach - I don't know how you would find better waves and a more perfect place to learn to surf. Instructors did a superb job. Love, love, love this place. Would go back every year if we can work it into the budget :)"

"I just got back from a week at Shaka and I can't recommend it more highly. For anyone who wants to spend a week surfing, doing yoga and enjoying a laid-back atmosphere in the jungle and on the beach this is the place for you. Although there were a few issues around communication regarding my reservation between the two owners, Mike, the on-site owner, was more than gracious and accommodating and my stay was truly wonderful. Megan's yoga classes were challenging and fun, Britt, the volunteer, was so sweet and kind, and every meal made by Jose was to die for. But the surf lessons were by far the highlight. Between Mike and Andi I was able to really progress throughout the week and even caught my first green wave! Can't wait to go back!"

"I spent 2 weeks at Shaka in May - June and it was truly fantastic! The crowd at Shaka is one of the most welcoming groups of people I have ever met. "

"I travelled on my own but as soon as I arrived I felt like one of the family. Everyone who works there is just great! Eric and Scott, the surf coaches, were so professional but also so much fun, my surfing really improved and I had a great time. Mike, the owner and Megan the yoga teacher were incredible, and consistently went the extra mile to make sure everyone was having a great time. "

"No review would be complete without mentioning Legend - Jerry! Such a cool guy, really fun, always keen to help with surfing tip or exploring trips!"

"The vibe is super chilled, the location is very off the beaten path and really close to the beach. The camp itself is a little slice of heaven, it has everything you need and nothing that you don't! The villas are beautiful and the hammocks are comfy! Everything was super clean and comfortable. The boards were in great condition and there was a wide variety of sizes and shape and the yoga is in an open pagoda in the middle of the forest- need I say more!"

"Just back from a week at Shaka Beach Retreat and had to write a review. As a solo traveler I was a bit nervous but this was one of the best vacations I have had:) Everyone at Shaka was super friendly, food was amazing, accommodations were clean and comfortable and most importantly I learned how to get up on a surf board:) My first trip was cancelled due to weather and Frank, one of the owners, was so accommodating and offered me a refund or a chance to rebook at a different time. It made a difference that he was so understanding! Mike, another owner, was an amazing surf instructor too and grateful for his patience and knowledge! I am so happy that I decided to go. Life changing and planning my return as soon as possible."

    • Review by a traveller from Kitchener, Canada

"I'm going to start by saying that this trip was, hands down, the best trip of my life. I've been lucky enough to have traveled extensively (Tahiti, Hawaii, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, all over the Caribbean, African, Europe, you get the picture) and my vacation to Shaka was the best of all. It was on my bucket list to learn how to surf and none of my friends were able to take time off for this trip, so I decided to go by myself (with the exception of the last 3 days of my 10 day trip where a friend met me there). Going on a solo vacation was nothing I had ever done before and I was terrified.I started with a flight to San Jose, which was direct from Toronto and cheaper than even flying to Florida. I took the puddle jumper from San Jose to Tambor (which was a great experience and about $110 round trip) and then about a 45 min cab ride to Shaka (you can set this up ahead of time by emailing the staff/about $50 each way). Once I arrived to Shaka I was warmly welcomed by the volunteer Emily and was shown to my cabina. The cabinas are clean and cool with a hot shower, a safe, and a hammock on the porch...everything you need to unwind and relax.A typical day at Shaka (for me): Wake up at 6:45am or so. Have some amazing Costa Rican coffee, yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit. Head out to surf at 7:30am. Kill the waves. Come back in around 9:30am and eat a ginormous, amazing breakfast prepared by their incredible chef Jose. Fall asleep in a hammock. Wake up for noon yoga with the lovely and talented (and strong as hell) Megan. I'm not a yogi but I thoroughly enjoyed these classes and learned a new style of yoga that was challenging and a perfect compliment to an active vacation. Walk the beach/explore the town/visit the tide pools/read a book/grab a board and surf again/have a sunset drink at Banana Beach until dinner time at 6:30pm for another amazing meal (always healthy and fresh). Here are the things that made the trip especially unique for me. I'm a type-A family doctor and am always super crazy busy in my normal life. We are somehow conditioned to feel like we need to "make the most of our vacations" by having "something to do" at all times (which is probably why I always feel like I need a vacation after my vacation). I am the ultimate planner. Before I went on the trip I had plans to go deep sea fishing, zip-lining, golfing, etc, etc. Once I got to Shaka, settled in, took in the vibe, I became someone completely different. I relaxed. Finally. I did none of the things I mentioned (although all are options). And it was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. We ALL need that in our lives and we need to incorporate that more often. This experience taught me that and I am eternally grateful. And now for the absolute best part of the trip...the people. It's most often not the destination that makes a vacation incredible, but the people you meet along the way. I truly felt like family when I was there and felt like I had known everyone my whole life. The volunteers Emily and Kiri were so warm and hospitable and HILARIOUS. Mike, one of the owners, wanted nothing more than to make your experience the best it could possibly be. My surf instructor Andi couldn't have been more upbeat, encouraging, and determined to get you up on the board...and she was great at it!! I got up on my second try. Megan taught me not only about yoga, but philosophies I will forever try to live by. Jerry (not officially on the Shaka team) was the ultimate tour guide and took us on great adventures. I think my favorite part about the trip was sitting around the dinner table, like one big family (not forgetting about Jack :), eating, talking, playing cards, and laughing (A LOT). I cannot wait to cross paths with all of you again and I couldn't be more appreciative of the experience you gave me on the trip of a lifetime. There is NO DOUBT that I will be back, hopefully sooner than later. Pura Vida. Much, much, love.Things to know: Bring only casual clothes (shorts, tanks, exercise stuff, bathing suits, rash guard, flip flops). Bring strong sunscreen (and probably some zinc for your face). Bring ear plugs...the howler monkeys have a party around 4am most days. Visit the Montezuma Falls. Visit Banana Beach for a sunset cocktail. Eat sushi down the street. Eat tritts! (The staff with explain). Consider bringing booze from the duty free if you enjoy a cocktail as beer, wine, liquor isn't cheap in Costa Rica. Visit the infiniti pool (can't remember what the hotel is called) for a beautiful sunset and view. This is a perfect place whether you are solo (like I was), as a couple, or with your family (I'm hoping to rent out Shaka with my entire family sometime soon). Relax, have the time of your life and give everyone a hug for me (even the dog Vida)."

"We started out by missing the 5 p.m. ferry and didn't arrive at Shaka until after midnight. We were immediately greeted by one of the amazing volunteers and showed to our room. The room was spacious and spotless, minimal on decor, great porch with a hammock in the front. We stayed in the cabina Pavones which had a queen bed and a little twin both which were comfy. AC and fan, plenty of hot water. Woke up first thing in the morning to endless amounts of coffee, fresh fruit, and yogurt for a pre-surf snack. Surf instructors were talented, positive, great energy and encouraging.Made a first time surfer a little white water shredder in only a couple of days! Brunch at 930am always delicious thanks to the chef, Jose. Rooms cleaned and fresh sheets put on while we surfed. Yoga was a great complementary activity to surfing. It was a very new style, difficult and physical for the noon session and restorative for the 4pm session 3 days a week. Dinner again amazing, always varied, always fresh.Favorite things: the people! All of them were so welcoming, helpful, friendly, fun, and they immediately made you feel like family. They were the main reason we stayed 2 extra nights...and we wish we had more. Shaka is on the quiet and more relaxed beach of Playa Hermosa a short drive past the busy, dusty, crowded streets of Santa Teresa. Things to know: No dinner served Saturday night (but a couple delicious restaurants within walking distance). No surf lessons (but you can still grab a board) or yoga on Sundays. We are definitely going to figure out how to get back there! Thanks Mike and the rest of the Shaka family!"

"This place is an absolute gem! Without a shadow of a doubt the best experience on my holiday in Costa Rica! Whilst the beautiful location close to the gorgeous beach clearly plays a part, the team have put together a wonderful place which guarantees a throughly pleasant stay, which will recharge your batteries help you disconnect from the stresses of work and city life. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The food was absolutely delicious and healthy to boot, every dinner was a pleasant surprise! But what makes the experience so top notch is the staff who are so warm, friendly and welcoming. Especially as on this occasion I was traveling solo, but from the first second I felt part of the Shaka family. From Mike who runs it, through to the volunteers (Emily and Brit), via the surf instructors (Scott and andi, as well as the hilarious 'sailor' Jerry) and Megan the yoga teacher, everyone involved was just so nice and that really made the stay so special. There is genuinely special vibe in this place. The surfing and yoga package is definitely a challenge but so rewarding. By the time I had to move on it was sad to have to leave. All the other clients were also really good fun...perhaps that's luck or perhaps Shaka simply attracts great people :) Whilst there might be cheaper options around I would advise people to save elsewhere on their trip and spend the extra dollar here, it will be well worth it. Thanks Shaka, pura vida."

"A group of seven of us stayed here in March, 2015. We couldn't have had a better experience. Everyone who worked at Shaka was so nice! The food was amazing and Mike, the owner, had the answer to every question. Several of us were visiting Costa Rica for the first time and the people at Shaka really made us feel at home. If you are a beginner at surfing (as we all were), no place is better than Shaka. Their expert instructors had all of us up on our boards within an hour. My wife and her friend also thoroughly enjoyed the yoga while the guys went deep sea fishing (also arranged by Mike at Shaka). I really can't say enough about this place. The town of Santa Teresa (short ATV or car ride) and the beach (short walk) were fun and amazingly beautiful. I wish I was still at Shaka and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relazing vacation mixed with a little bit of adventure!"

"A group of 7 of us travelled to Costa Rica a few weeks ago, and stayed in two of the Shaka cabins for five days. Shaka has a great feel to it, which was apparent immediately upon our arrival. Mike, the owner, is very knowledgable of the area and culture. Megan, the yoga instructor, has trained in many types of yoga and has developed her own "jungle hybrid yoga", which was challenging and awesome! I also enjoyed her restorative yoga classes. Megan has a beautiful soul and her presence at Shaka helps to contribute to the overall good vibes atmosphere. Also, Emily and Britt were the volunteers at the time my group was there, and did an excellent job; it was such a pleasure to have them around at meal times!Speaking of meals, the food here is simple, but clean and delicious, and very fitting for the heat, and active lifestyle. Finally, to the surfing lessons: my whole group did the lessons, and none of us had previous experience. Mike, Michelle, and Eric were our instructors. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for his / her own piece of Pura Vida."

"This is quite simply the best place I've ever stayed. The rooms are beautiful, it's right on Playa Hermosa which is the best beach in the area for surfing and probably also the most beautiful. It has a lovely garden, the food is home cooked and delicious, but the best part of all are the incredible staff who were just the loveliest people: Mike, Megan and Emily were like inheriting a group of best friends. They were beyond accommodating and also great fun. The yoga classes are the best I've ever been to, dynamic in a way that prepares you for surfing, and ran by Megan who brings wisdom and kindness to everyone she comes into contact with, a truly special soul. The surf instructors were also all excellent. I wish I could move in here and stay forever."

Megan, the yoga teacher, is by far the best and will give you a good butt kicking or help you to relax and stretch out after a day of surfing. Brent and Moe are a great team and really love to teach people to surf! The food every morning and night is amazing, he really knows what is doing from his homemade salad dressing to the best tuna I've had cooked for me in my life! Maria and Carlos really help to keep the place running and looking great! I will be back again!"

"I traveled with a friend to Shaka a few weeks ago and it was absolutely the trip of a lifetime. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and as other mentioned, the Air Conditioner is a nice bonus. Breakfast and dinner were some of the best meals I've ever had. Every night I felt like I was at a quaint, fun little dinner party where everyone shared some laughs and wine while feasting on the most delectable locally sourced food."

"What truly made it such a memorable experience though was the staff, especially Megan (yoga) and Brent (surfing). Megan's classes suit every experience level and her positive, calming energy is contagious. Brent is patient and informative and had me up on the board on the first day. On top of all this, the ocean is 80 degrees, the sunsets are gorgeous, and the ATV-ing is indescribably fun. I hope to make it a yearly trip."

"After reading all the reviews for Shaka, I decided this was the place to go for vacation. My husband and I wanted to stay somewhere that was close to the beach, close to town, but far enough away. Shaka was it.We arrived at the airport early in the morning and rented a car from Economy. They picked us up at the airport and took us to their office to get the car. We also could have taken a taxi but we wanted to do some adventuring, so the car was a great option. After picking up the car we set off to Shaka. It took us about and hour and a half to get to the ferry. Once on the ferry, we relaxed, grabbed some lunch, soaked in the culture and the beautiful scenery. We arrived at the port and drove for another hour and a half, then we were at Shaka!Upon arrival, we were greeted and shown our room, which was super clean and had cute towel animals on the beds. We put our stuff down and were told dinner would be at 18:30. Dinner was amazing. Fresh caught tuna, mashed yucca, a beautiful salad, it was definitely gourmet standards. We were tired and had a big week ahead, so we went to bed straight after. The next day was filled with surfing and yoga. My husband is an amazing surfer, so we ventured out on our own. I took a break from that to go to yoga...which was beautiful. The instructor, Megan was so sweet and gave great instruction. She also came by a could of times to help me adjust my pose and go deeper, which I love! She was a very peaceful person and made the experience even better by adding some meditative suggestions into the practice.Brunch was delicious and everyone at Shaka welcomed us with a smile. We adventured around town and did some shopping. We grabbed a quick snack at a local place and went back to the beach. When we came back our room was clean with fresh towels and new towel animals. We had some laundry to be done so we left it for Maria, the housekeeper, and it was clean and folded. The rest of the week was so amazing. We had a great time and will be back."

"It was exactly what we wanted - learn to surf and do some yoga in a place that's a bit away from civilization. The staff is all really friendly and helpful. Our group was 7 of the 12 guests, so there was some flexibility in the schedule as well. Max they can fit is 16, so definitely on the smaller side, this is great because you can get lots of individual attention from instructors and staff. Always people around to chat with and plenty of room to spread out if you want some privacy."

"I've just spent two weeks at Shaka and it was very difficult to leave. I have fallin in love and will be back soon! All of Shaka Camp's staff were friendly and helpful, the surf instructors are very skilled and patient. The accomodations provided a safe and comfortable stay, which allowed me to sleep like a baby every night. A short walk and you have arrived to Playa Hermosa. This beach has got to be one of the most spectacular in all of Costa Rica, amazing sunsets, long stretch of sandy beach, great surf and the backdrop of a beautiful rainforest. This is the pure life! "I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoyed the week I spent at Shaka- I was a solo traveler and had never been to Costa Rica. Obviously a little nervous about who and what to expect in general but all of the travel directions were made very easy to follow on the website and the owner Frank- who set up my reservation sent me a couple emails to make sure my arrangements were on track. The entire staff was incredible, and every day felt seamless and relaxed and they each made sure us guests were perfectly settled. It was much more personal than I imagined- the hospitality was awesome. The other owner Mike was very knowledgable about the area and helped us get around to run errands, etc. The chef Jose made amazing fulfilling meals which we all ate together, and that was a really nice feature. Everything was so clean and comfortable. The other staff members- Michelle and Mo'e the surf instructors, Emily and Kiri the volunteers, Steve and Janna the yoga teachers, and everyone else were all real amazing people who are really interested in you getting the most of your stay with them. I left much happier and healthier than the way I went in. Thank you guys!"

"My boyfriend and I just returned from a 2 week holiday to Costa Rica. We visited some other areas in Costa Rica but our week stay at Shaka Beach Retreat was definitely the highlight of our trip! This place is the ultimate laid back surfers paradise! Our surfing improved so much thanks to the awesome surf instructions from Michelle. She was a superb surf instructor and taught us so much about our surfing technique as well as reading the waves and surf etiquette. It was also super cute that the resident Shaka beach dog, Vida, LOVED Michelle and would come down to the beach to guard our flipflops while we surfed! Haha too cute! Our yoga teacher for the week was Steve. Practicing yoga in a gazebo in the jungle is a pretty unreal experience! I really enjoyed his classes and he had the perfect yoga teacher voice so soothing. My favourite class was the one where we focused on inversions and played around with forearm stands and headstands. It was so much fun! It was also really nice to stretch out after all the surfing. Our chef Jose made us delicious breakfasts and suppers to fuel us for the week of surf! The food was fresh, local and so healthy. I especially loved the smoothies with dinner, yum! Mike takes care of all the day to day operations at Shaka and he helped us out with anything and everything during our stay! From the moment we arrived, he was there to greet us and show us around and make our stay at Shaka so easy. Thanks for everything Mike! There are a ton of day trips and activities you can do that Shaka will arrange for you. We were thinking of going on a day trip to see Montezuma waterfall or ziplining but honestly once we arrived, all we wanted to do was stay at Shaka to surf, yoga, or chill out in a hammock. It's so relaxing at Shaka! The community vibe at Shaka is amazing. I loved eating our meals at the communal table and sharing stories and laughs with the awesome staff, volunteers, other guests and friends of the Shaka staff! The staff here is made up of the best kind of people - genuinely kind and real. We really felt like part of the lil Shaka family by the end of the week.We cant wait to come back! Pura Vida!"

"My family of 6 stayed at Shaka for 7 days in December 2015. During our stay we experienced excellent meals prepared with incredibly fresh ingredients, clean and safe and cozy accommodations, the best surf instruction on the beach and a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere from everyone that worked there. Michelle was so great at explaining technique and guided us on each wave until she felt we finally got it, Eric was particularly good at not only correcting technique but reminding us to smile and have fun and Mike was great with our kids helping them build the skills to gain confidence on the board (and also teaching them a card trick that they are now obsessed with showing everyone we know in CT!) One of the other areas of instruction that we got from Michelle was safety in the water and how to respect the sport and other surfers, a great thing for my kids to understand as they grow in this sport. When we weren't surfing we were either relaxing in hammocks watching and listening to the monkeys and iguanas in the trees or practicing some much needed yoga in the outdoor yoga studio with Megan. There was a market in walking distance to Shaka that the kids visited daily for snacks but we never really did any other adventures during our week because we were so happy with just being able to walk to the beach and the ability to surf a couple of times a day, practice yoga or just go hang out on the beach (or chill in a hammock!) I would highly recommend this spot for an unforgettable vacation of learning to surf. We are missing it already!"
