This is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a writing retreat fueled by yoga practice and the inspirational surroundings of Maine. Open to all writers, even those that do not yet think of themselves as writers, the retreat will offer structured writing exercises, a supportive environment for sharing your work, individual writing time, and tips on how to integrate writing into your life. The Sewall House is a good choice for people going through some sort of change in their life, whether it be work-related, relationship or health-related. People also choose them because they are in Maine, in a uniquely inviting historic home. All guests have also shared that the smaller number of attendees feels less like a "university" than some of the larger yoga retreats. They also have an isolated camp on the nearby lake, rented by special application, and for overnight stays. During our off season, they can arrange special retreats if requested. Each participant who pays for the course, room, and board will have a private bedroom for rest and study. The rooms are wonderful, comfortable, and beautifully furnished.

Program

Yoga/ Writing workshop begins on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 15:00. The closing session ends on Monday, October 14, 2019, at 13:00.

Sample daily schedule

  • Meditation (5 min)
  • Short writing exercise (2 - 3 minutes)
  • Writing lesson (20 - 30 minutes)
  • Kundalini set (20 - 30 minutes)
  • Longer writing exercise (20+ minutes)
  • Sharing (optional) (20+ minutes)
  • Optional: Homework (for those who want to continue to write before the next session)
  • Optional: One Private session: submit 1-5 pages in advance or just use the session as you wish (e.g., publishing advice, establishing a writing routine, etc.)

Retreat location

Sewall House is located in a small village in northern Maine. It is only 30 miles from the Canada-United States border. The bordering town in United States is Houlton, Maine (passport required). In Canada, the bordering town is Woodstock, New Brunswick which is 92 kilometers west of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Northern Maine is not highly populated. The Sewall House is situated in a town of 700 people with two nearby lakes and Baxter State Park with its mighty Mt. Katahdin. There are gift shops nearby, a number 1 rated 18 hole golf course, one restaurant, and a few diners but no commercial chain stores or coffee houses. Island Falls is a pure small-town in New England.

Food

Sewall House serves a vegetarian menu in keeping with yoga practice. Our food is ample, tasty, mostly organic and prepared on the premises. Things like their own granola, home-made yogurt, breads and desserts and main dishes with vegetables and various legumes are served. Sewall House gets much of their fresh produce from a local Amish community and local farms. They do not serve alcohol or meat. They do serve coffee.

How to get there

Driving directions from Portland

  • Drive north on I-295 which becomes I-95 North near Augusta.
  • Continue on I-95 to Island Falls and take exit 276, take a right off the ramp.
  • Veer right at Bishop's store where you see the electronic clock on route 159.
  • Sewall House Yoga Retreat is the first house on the left after you veer right (2/10 mile off I-95 North).
  • You will see a white house with a Sewall House sign in the front yard.
  • And simply; they are next to the Post Office and if you pass it, you have passed us.

Arrival by airplane

Please book a flight to arrive at Bangor International Airport (BGR) or Portland International Airport (PDX). Transfer from and to this airport is available upon request.

From the airports, you can also catch a bus or rent a car going to the Venue.

Arrival by bus

From Portland or Boston, you can take a bus with Concord Trailways and change to CYR Bus which leaves Bangor daily at 18:00.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 50% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid on arrival.
