This is a unique opportunity to take a teacher training in a small residential Retreat Center. Unlike other yoga teacher training program, Sewall House provides a private personalized atmosphere. We only offer a limited space for five participants. The training will be Kundalini and Hatha yoga, influenced by Iyengar, Ashtanga and Dharmayoga.
We have discovered since we opened in 1997 that Sewall House especially seems a good choice for people going through some sort of change in their life, whether it be work-related, relationship or health-related. People also choose us because we are in Maine in a uniquely inviting historic home.
Our guests have also shared that the smaller number of attendees feels less like a "university" than some of the larger yoga retreats. We also have an isolated camp on the nearby lake, rented by special application and for overnight stays. During our off season we can arrange special retreats if requested.
Each participant who pays for the course, room, and board will have a private bedroom for rest and study. The rooms are roomy, comfortable, and beautifully furnished.
The environment of Sewall House gives the future teachers the opportunity to fully concentrate on their studies. Your work will then help you incorporate and build what you have learned into your own practice, homework and potential as a teacher. It is important that you are able to commit to the entire program of this yoga instructor training in Maine.
The length of the session will be three weeks. Each day the sessions will be 10 hours. Thus, there will be a total of 3 weeks of sessions to meet all of the requirements of the 200 hour training plus homework.
If you are interested on this yoga teacher training course, please submit the application form. Please send a message to Sewall House using Send Inquiry button to get the application form.
Please make clear your reason for taking the training, as this is an important requirement. It is not about years of experience, though you are expected to have had some yoga experience. If you have only taken a few yoga classes you may not be a good candidate for this training but may still apply as the reasons for taking it are as important as your experience. If that is the case, you may be required to take a certain number of classes before the training. You are expected to attend all sessions, do all work that is required, as well as practicum and work outside the classroom. Completion of the exam is at the end of the program. It is important that you are able to commit to the entire program.
Sewall House will be reviewing the Yama and Niyamas, guidelines for yoga lifestyle, and applying these in our training and homework. Your first assignment will be to write a 500-1000 word paper on these guidelines and submit at least one week before we begin. Please come at least familiar with the Yoga Sutras as well.
Keenly interested in health and exploration, Donna Davidge is a highly experienced 500 E-RYT yoga teacher. She received her master’s in nutrition in the late 1970s, then acted and modeled from the mid-80s into the early 1990s. In 1985, Donna discovered Kundalini yoga in New York City, practicing and studying this form as a powerful tool for healing and personal growth. Her teacher Ravi Singh encouraged her to begin teaching within a year. Pursuing yoga avidly, she became certified by 3HO and Yoga Alliance. She will be completing her book "Balancing on Bunions," based on her memoirs.
Sewall House is located in a small village in northern Maine. We are only 30 miles from the Canada-United States border. The bordering town in United states is Houlton, Maine (passport required). In Canada the bordering town is Woodstock, New Brunswick which is 92 km west of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
Northern Maine is not highly populated. We are located in a town of 700 people with two nearby lakes and Baxter State Park with its mighty Mt Katahdin. There are gift shops nearby, a #1 rated 18 hole golf course, one restaurant and a few diners but no commercial chain stores or coffee houses. Island Falls is pure small-town New England.
During the yoga teachers training, we will be eating a vegetarian diet; should you have special dietary needs please let us know. A vegetarian diet is suggested but not required in a yoga lifestyle. This will be a lacto-ovo menu, which includes dairy. For a small additional fee we can accommodate gluten-free and vegan requests. We do not serve alcohol or meat. We do serve yogi tea and coffee.
