Serenity Yoga deliberately keeps the program small with only10 students per lead trainer (20 in total) so that each student has numerous opportunities to put into practice what you learn and receive maximum feedback from the lead trainer.
This is to maximize the time that we have together to get to our fullest potential by the end of the course. This provides more time to learn, more time to absorb information, more time to ask valuable questions from your teachers, and most importantly to build the confidence needed to become a professional yourself.
Expect 200 hours plus spread over 24 full days, rather than 12 hours over 20 days. 10 hour days allow you much more time to enjoy the course content without feeling too much pressure or stress and also allow you to enjoy taking care of your sleep and health as well.
This program is a 24 day intensive with 3 days off (one per week) for self-study or exploring our beautiful islands. There will also be a Facebook group with articles that need reading and require interaction from the students starting 1-2 months prior to the start date of the course itself. Each day will include yoga asana in the style of Vinyasa yoga, guided meditation and pranayama, philosophy, and yogic discussion with full support from the Serenity Yoga team. You will learn how to master the art of observation, learn how to really see your students, design a self-practice that will be the basis of your own teaching style, and you will also learn how this creates not just a good teacher, but a fantastic one.
Through numerous daily asana labs and a strong emphasis on practical anatomy and teaching practice, you will come to learn so much detail around each and every pose we discover together, as well as suitable alternatives for different levels of yogis, or those with injuries so that all can exist within the same class.
You will be taught how to modify poses for beginners or advanced practitioners in your class, ensuring that each yogi takes from their practice what they need. You will learn how to master your verbal teaching skills so that you can teach with or without demonstrations due to the clarity of your spoken word. You will also learn how to navigate and master the art of sequencing and holding space in a multi-level classroom with ease and confidence.
You will learn to understand better how to skillfully and playfully sequence group yoga classes, along with how to approach one-on-one teaching in private classes, making them more meaningful and personal. You will be taught on how to build class templates, but is also flexible enough to be able to switch between intuitive and planned sequencing, and how to take inspiration from what you like, and not what you think you should like.
You will discover your authentic voice and gifts as a teacher, create inspiring and meaningful themes. How to create a whole experience for your students from the moment they arrive at your class, right through to the moments and hours after their class has finished.
You will learn how to use your own life experiences as an inspiration in your classes, refining your gift of expression and teaching through constant feedback with your teacher and peers.
You will learn the skeletal makeup, the role of the ligaments and tendons, versus the muscles, how the body works together skillfully to ensure that effort is spread equally throughout the body so as to avoid injury. You will learn this so that you can use your knowledge about the body to help further develop students' asana practice from a practical and health perspective. Our focus on creating sequences that inspire both strength and flexibility.
You will also learn to consider and master the art of transitions in Vinyasa, because after all without transitions all you have is a series of unconnected yoga shapes that don’t evoke the same energy flow through the body. You will learn to embody the anatomy and philosophy of yoga, cultivating a deeper understanding of subtle body anatomy that you can sprinkle into your classes, and take further into better understanding your own practice and body.
You will learn the biomechanics of how the body works, about the difference between how a pose looks and the functional reason for practicing the asana itself, and the uniqueness of alignment needed for each individual yogi in your classroom.
You will learn to embody and cultivate a deeper understanding of subtle body anatomy so that you can sprinkle this into your classes, alongside the more practical layers of anatomy.
You will also discuss the business of yoga and the philosophy of where yoga came from, how it evolved, and its different styles. We will study with a strong focus on Patanjali’s Eight Limbs of Yoga, and Bhagavad Gita throughout the course, along with an awareness of the key texts and stages of the development of the history of yoga.
You will touch on so many areas that you will realize that yoga is a journey of life, and these 200 hours of training will simply be the start of your big adventure into the most exciting journey of all.
There will be a variety of assignments given to you during the course to ensure that you are absorbing the information you will be taught each week. Topics will vary and some will be written and some practical according to students' needs.
There will be a final practical exam where you will be invited to teach a full 60-minute yoga class to peers, with full support and feedback both before and afterwards. There will also be a 2-3 hour written exam to complete in the final week. We will do weekly trial written papers so that you are fully prepared for what to expect by the end and to see where you are with your own learning path.
All yoga classes held throughout the whole duration of the course are free to our YTT students.
