Quietly tucked away in Rekawa’s expansive lagoon nestles the Sanctuary’s beautiful accommodation. Suspended walkways, which allow wildlife to pass beneath, lead you to The Sanctuary’s low-key luxury thatched cabanas. Sleeping up to 16 guests, each of the twin and king-size rooms are carefully designed to allow natural ventilation avoiding the need for air-conditioning; thanks to the beachside location the resort is naturally cool.
The luxury low key cabanas are an original design by Brazilian-American architect Adriana Arbex. They mimic the natural shape of the conical shell to draw earth energy up from the land to be experienced by guests whilst staying in the rooms. The main building is also designed in a conical and circular shape which moves energy around in a manner that can be palpably felt by our guests.
Surrounded by mangroves, the lagoon and a glorious stretch of golden palm-fronted beach (also home to a magnificent turtle nesting site), the cabanas have been sensitively designed with respect to this natural environment and to protect the amazing wildlife. Sen Wellness Sanctuary natural project went through an Environmental Impact Assessment and was granted approval by the Sri Lankan government for mitigation of environmental damage. Everything is built on stilts to allow the flow of animal migration, no heavy machinery was employed in the development and all exteriors and interiors are of local craftsmanship using local materials, sensitive to the beautiful natural home of the Sanctuary.
The bathrooms are open to the elements so guests can experience a shower whilst star gazing. The rustic elegance of The Sanctuary’s en suite bathroom celebrates the skilful craftsmanship of local artisans using the very best of local materials.
Through this retreat, you will be able to alleviate muscular and skeletal ache, pains, and stresses, especially long-term conditions such as chronic back and neck pain or headache. You will be detoxifying and cleansing your liver, kidneys, and digestive system while relieving your nervous system of stresses.
The retreat includes full consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor upon your arrival and prior to your departure with daily support. Herbal Ayurvedic medicinal support is also included in the retreat and you will have three 45-minute acupuncture treatment. Depending on your body type, you will also have personalized Ayurvedic therapies daily that should last for 30 to 90 minutes per session.
The yoga classes will be held daily and are open to all levels of practitioners. Each yoga class will be between 90 to 120 minutes, while the daily sound healing and meditation sessions, which are also open to all levels of experience, will last for 30 minutes per session. You will have three private one-hour sessions with the yoga and meditation teacher, so you could be assisted with your own individual practice
You will also have 30-minute pre-care and after-care Skype sessions with Sam, an osteopath and the director of Breath of Life Sanctuary. Complimentary herbal medicines to take home so you could continue your treatment process are also included, as well as a dietary advice and guideline sheet that is personalized for your health needs.
Kundalini yoga is an ancient form of yoga, which become known as the yoga of awareness. Through regular practice, it offers heightened consciousness and a greater sense of well being. It is not a yoga that is based on postures or asana, which makes it different to most mainstream yoga styles.
A typical class consists of a series of physical movements, also know as kria, relaxation, and meditation. Movements can be held for two or three minutes, often combined with a breathing pattern, this allows energy pathways within the body to open and re-balance. Once these energy channels are open, physical and mental healing can begin.
Meditation is a huge part of Kundalini yoga. Often, meditation is used to release stored emotion and stress by working with breathing patterns and mantras. Kundalini yoga is powerful, fast, and effective. It provides simple steps that anyone can do no matter the age or physical ability. No previous experience of yoga is necessary to join a class.
Maren is a certified level one and two Kundalini yoga and meditation teacher. She trained with Har Nal Kaur in London and Karta Singh in France and graduated with Amrit Nam Sarovar in 2012. Maren offers Kundalini yoga and meditation classes following the teachings of Yogi Bhajan as well as sound healing using the chiron gong. She is passionate about helping others achieve mental, physical, and spiritual balance and unlock their creative potential. Her classes are open to all levels.
Maya received her KRI certification at Golden Bridge Yoga Los Angeles in 2004 with the renowned teachers Harijiwan Singh, Tej Kaur and Guru- mukh Kaur. She is a qualified Khalsa Way pre-natal yoga teacher, a Y.O.G.A for Youth teacher, and a Laughter Yoga teacher. She has taught Kundalini Yoga in Los Angeles, Bali, Byron Bay, and Sydney.
Kathryn is the KMYOGA founder and director. She discovered Kundalini yoga and meditation in Yucatan, Mexico in 2000 and has been teaching worldwide ever since. After living in London for 11 years, where she taught private clients including Bjork and Rachel McAdams and classes at Triyoga and Alchemy, two of the largest yoga studios there. She returned to Sydney in 2011 to open KMYOGA, Sydney’s first dedicated Kundalini yoga studio, which she ran for three years. She has now returned to London where she is again teaching private clients and group classes, as well as leading retreats worldwide.
The retreat will be held in Sen Wellness, Tangalle, Sri Lanka. Explore this beautiful country, an island in the southern coast of India often called as paradise island. Sri Lanka is half the size of New York and home to the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and Burghers.

While staying at the sanctuary, each and every experience provides the chance to immerse yourself in Sri Lanka’s culture and explore its hidden beauty. The sanctuary is surrounded by beautiful national parks, which are home to several exotic species of animals such as leopards, elephants, and many varieties of birds.
Rekawa is one of the most significant sea turtle nesting sites in Sri Lanka. Here you can find soft, pale, and golden sand and the energetic waves of the Indian Ocean make a dramatic coastline fronted by palm trees.
Water sports and whale-watching activities are available if you feel like having outdoor adventures. In the town itself, there are food markets and the school for the blind that the sanctuary supports. Venture into the lush green interior of the place and see working paddy fields or join the locals at a temple.
During this retreat, you will have three 45-minute osteopathy and cranial osteopathy treatments and daily 30 to 90-minute Ayurvedic therapies depending on your body type.
