Program

Mystical yoga style

SYI trainings hold a strong intention for personal transformation. In this way, the courses are designed not only to provide students with tools to share the wisdom of yoga with others, yet also to look at their own lives from a spiritual perspective. Each training holds unique energy, created from like-minded souls who join from all over the world.

SYI values intimate trainings with intentionally smaller groups in order to provide more one-to-one time with teachers and a deeper sense of community and connection. To guide the process of personal transformation, they draw on the ancient wisdom of the east as well as on the shamanic medicine wheel of Peru. SYI's yoga teacher training courses are arranged in four cycles, following the four cardinal directions, asking the guardian spirits to guide a cycle of release, understanding, growth, and empowerment. Together you create a space that reveals your wisdom within and accelerates the realization of your life purpose.

Practice

Mystical yoga, or yoga of spiritual practice, reaches deep into the roots of this ancient way of life, calling on us to reveal the yoga, the union, within everything. SYI's 200-hour trainings embody this approach, opening you up to the wisdom and the teacher that is already within you all. You dance, chant, sing. You find community with like-minded people and you embrace the stillness within yourselves. You call on your intuition for the answers and you speak from spirit to spirit. You dive deep into the experience, free from unnecessary distractions and allow your authentic connection to emerge.

Throughout the process of the training, you have the opportunity to step into your power as yoga teachers who share the mystical dimensions from where we all came and to which we will return. The universe is a place of discovery, mystery, and mysticism. We come into this world to unveil our own soul-purpose and to reveal our own gifts, so we can serve the world and advance our own spiritual evolution. Through yoga practice, your personal spiritual exploration, you uncover a deeper connection within you.

From the ancient wisdom, daily yoga mystical practice, and through the transformative mystical yoga practice, you begin to reveal a greater sense of beauty, love, and freedom. You see yoga as a vehicle that carries you to experience and enjoy the pure, true essence of life. This path will ask for self-reflection, growth, and discipline. These trainings provide an opportunity to learn under the Gurukula system, living with our teachers - both our external gurus and our inner gurus, and immersing ourselves in the world of yoga.

A day in the life

During your trainings, SYI asks participants to embrace all aspects of the yogic lifestyle, such as observing a vegetarian diet, living free from the distractions of other substances, and moving away from technology and unnecessary communication with the external world. They ask dedication, commitment, and surrender, as well as immersion in the spiritual community for the duration of the training in order to allow the work to be as impactful as possible.

Open yourself to what is there, leave all expectations behind, and enter the enlightened perspective and sacred landscape of your training with an open heart - whatever comes will be exactly what you need.

Each day carries an intention, a spiritual lesson of the day, that you explore throughout the day. You begin each morning with a sunrise meditation, followed by a 90-minute asana practice and nourishing yogic breakfast. The days are spent learning yogic theory and healing practices through workshops, classes, and group discussions. During this time, you cover the fundamentals of yogic living, including yogic diet, anatomy, meditation, cleansing practices, pranayama, Ayurveda, and the ancient wisdom of the Yoga Sutras. Your training also opens up to include other methods of healing, calling on not just the physical and mental elements, but also the more subtle forms such as earth medicine, energy healing, and shamanic journeying.

SYI shares the art of teaching and art of touch, during which students learn to teach two asana sequences, the Mystical Hatha flow, a slow, meditative, Sivananda-based practice, and the Mystical Vinyasa flow, a more intense, breath-synchronized flow. SYI also shares the fundamentals of intelligent sequencing and explore alignment and adjustment of poses in depth. Each evening, you close with Satsang, your evening gathering, which may be meditation, kirtan chanting, or sacred ceremony.

Mystical Hatha and Vinyasa flows

By the end of an SYI 200-hour yoga teacher training, you will have broken down two yoga sequences. These sequences will prepare you to step into the light as a teacher or as a foundation to deepen your own practice. You learn an Ashtanga-inspired Vinyasa flow sequence and a Sivananda-inspired Hatha flow sequence.

Prerequisites

The course is open to people of all yoga abilities. SYI simply asks that participants set an intention to devote their time and energy to the process of being present and open to becoming. They also suggest that you work to establish your own personal yoga practice, through attending classes or workshops, or on your own. Set intention, with an open heart and mind, to fully embrace and experience the yogic lifestyle during your training and beyond.

Required books for the program

Prior to the training, SYI recommends that students take a look at the required reading, and if possible some of their recommended reading list as well:

  • Yoga Anatomy by Leslie Kaminoff (purchase at Amazon, iBooks, Kindle, or your local bookstore)
  • Yoga Sutras by Dennis Hill (purchase on SYI's website, at Amazon, or your local bookstore. You can also bring a different version of the Yoga Sutras)

Sense of community

At School Yoga Institute, everyone is wholeheartedly accepted and encouraged to be their authentic self. Their talented facilitator team works together to create and hold a space where participants feel safe and comfortable. They support the growth and expansion of people’s horizons - physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and energetically. As a group, a community, a tribe, and an extended family, they practice and learn to let go. They allow the world to unfold before them without reaction or judgment.

SYI's intention is to guide students through their own healing journey in order to better prepare them for healing others, letting go of anything that holds them back from what their hearts are truly called to. Together you unveil the essence, learning to taste the sweet nectar of life while maneuvering in the world with strength and grace.

Open yourself to what is there, leave all expectations behind, and enter the enlightened perspective and sacred landscape of your training with an open heart - whatever comes will be exactly what you need.

SYI's graduates commonly describe the training as a life-changing experience that provides an opportunity for individuals to know themselves and a deep and lasting way. SYI's programs offer much more than the physical aspect of yoga, they offer their students the opportunity to embark on a journey that brings them to a place of inner knowing. They invite students to take this back into their communities.
