This nurturing small group New Year break blends accessible yoga and mindfulness practices with the chance to rest, restore and be pampered at one of all-time favorite venues: a gorgeous, peaceful five-bedroom Riad in the heart of Marrakech, yet surrounded by three gardens. Complete beginners to yoga and/or mindfulness very welcome. In line with the ethos of Satvada Retreats, yet very unusually in the marketplace, this will be a select, small group retreat, with an absolute maximum of ten guests (likely numbers: around eight guests).

Designed around a palm-tree bedecked courtyard, the little design of the Riad touches and incredibly peaceful setting make this venue an absolute treat. Completely restored by a French couple in 2011, it's surrounded on three sides by gardens, with the roof terrace offering a panoramic view of lush vegetation - highly unusual (perhaps unique) in the center of Marrakech's busy medina.

All five beautifully and individually designed bedrooms are en-suite (showers only) and boast Egyptian cotton linen and distinctly Moroccan touches: Berber rugs, handcrafted furniture and doorways. There is one first-floor suite, available to guests at a supplement. This retreat is limited to just five lovely bedrooms. All rooms are en-suite and can accommodate up to two people. However, only three rooms can be configured as a twin room, so early booking is recommend. Please see more detail below:

The Suite

The master suite has a double bed and suitable for one or two people. This stylish and attractive room is the largest room in the Riad and suitable for those looking for a little extra luxury and comfort. Located on the first floor, it overlooks the central courtyard.

Room 1 - Altar room

Room 1 can be configured as either a twin or a double and so suitable for up to two people. The rooms balances comfort and style. Located on the first floor, it comes complete with a small veranda which overlooks the central courtyard.

Room 2 - Toliman room

Room 2 can be configured as either a twin or a double and and so suitable for up to two people. The rooms balances comfort and style. Located on the first floor, and overlooks the central courtyard.

Room 3 - Elnath room

Room 3 can be configured as either a twin or a double and and so suitable for up to two people. The rooms balances comfort and style. Located on the first floor, with its own private staircase it comes complete with a small veranda which overlooks the central courtyard.

Room 4 - Hamal room

Room 4 has a double bed and so suitable for one or two people. The rooms balances comfort and style. Located on the ground floor, it overlooks the central courtyard.


The yoga and mindfulness sessions, held in the lovely central courtyard, will run twice a day, in the morning and early evening. Ninety minutes in length, the sessions will blend mindful movement with traditional mindfulness practices, and are tailored to all levels - no previous yoga or meditation experience is assumed or needed. The retreat may appeal to newcomers to either practice, to those interested in practicing yoga and mindfulness together, or for those wishing to deepen an established practice.

Please note: in line with Satvada Retreats' ethos to ensure accessibility, different postural options will always be given, and there is absolutely no need to be able to sit on the floor in a perfect crossed legged position! Please also note: the movement practices will be taught as meditation, and will not be suitable for those looking for a dynamic, strong practice.

There will be a class on the first evening of the retreat, and a class on the final morning. In between, there will be two 90-minute classes a day. Yoga mats and blankets are provided.

Lucia Cockcroft
Lucia is a co-founder of Satvada retreats and sister organisation, Yoga At The Mill, a highly regarded yoga and mindfulness studio in Chelmsford, Essex. Lucia has been practicing yoga and meditation for almost 20 years, and teaching for ten. With a background in wellbeing journalism, she re-trained as a yoga teacher after seeking a less desk-bound lifestyle. Lucia has trained intensively with leading yoga and meditation teachers. She is passionate about the ability of yoga and meditation to transform how she feels physically, energetically, and emotionally.

Retreat location

There is so much to love about this friendly north African country: its warmth -of both the weather and people, the wonderful food, the big horizons, the scent of orange and lemon trees, plus the astonishing variety of scenery: from mountains to desert, to spectacular beaches.

The sites in the north part of the city, such as the Medersa Ben Youssef, the Museum of Marrakesh and the Majorelle Gardens. Staying in the old medina is probably nothing like anything you have ever experienced before, so get lost a few times and soak up the ancient city life.

Another highlight of any retreat here is the food: feedback is consistently exceptional, with lovingly cooked and served Moroccan food (vegetarian), always prepared from scratch. Please expect some treats, alongside all the wholesome meals - in the name of balance and love of food, we like to serve afternoon tea, complete with home-baked cake, pudding at dinner time, tea and coffee in the mornings (herbal teas included), and the option to have a glass of wine at dinner time.

All meals are vegetarian by default. Please be aware that it may not be possible to cater for special diets on this retreat - please contact Satvada Retreats before booking.

You will see in the New Year with a lovingly prepared and presented gala dinner, washed down (mindfully!) with a glass of bubbly wine.

Alcohol will be available to purchase with meals, and is at your own additional expense. We recommend keeping alcohol intake to a glass or two with evening meals, to maximize enjoyment of the morning yoga and to keep a quiet atmosphere!

In between twice-daily 90-minute yoga and mindfulness sessions, there is plenty of time to do as much or little as you please.
