New Year Yoga Retreat in Morocco

Do you have time off over New Year and would like to do something rather special? Satvada Retreats would love you to join our Morocco New Year yoga escape at our beautiful Riad in the heart of the Marrakesh medina, an eight-minute walk from the famous Jeema el Fna square. There will be a balance of daily yoga; two organised walks (one in the city, the other in the Atlas mountains); wonderful, traditional home cooking; time to rest and re-charge. The daily morning yoga class will be dynamic and flowing, suitable for all levels. The gentle evening class will take a slower, more meditative approach. This is for anyone seeking an exciting, relaxing and rejuvenating way to spend New Year.

With just six beautiful rooms, our host Riad - old Moroccan townhouse - has been recently restored to an unusually high standard, with exquisite attention to detail, and with high respect for the environment Neutral, calming colors make the most of Morocco's wonderful natural light (even at this time of year, when Winter day-time temperatures average around 20 degrees) and pay homage to modernism and Europe.

At the same time, splashes of color and character from cushions, Berber rugs and lamps, together with furniture supplied by local craftsmen, add an unmistakably north African flavour. The end result is effortlessly stunning. Equally important, once the door signaling the entrance to the Riad closes, the bustle and rush of the medina feel miles away, and you know you've found a true city centre retreat.

The Riad's communal areas include a library, with roaring fire, beautiful courtyard with plunge pool, and a spacious roof terrace, complete with chairs and white sun loungers for soaking up Winter rays. We will eat at the long table in the dining room, just off the courtyard - or, weather permitting, in the sunshine on the roof terrace. The six bedrooms (three of which are superior) are on the upper floors and are beautifully appointed.

They boast fireplaces, some with wood-burning stoves. have heating for cool evenings. Outside three of the rooms there are pretty tables and chairs for you to enjoy a leisurely tea or read a book. Please note, the three superior rooms will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Daily morning yoga will be at around 09.00 - 10.30 a.m., after that we will enjoy a buffet brunch. Then, the rest of the day is allotted for you to spend it on your own, whether to explore the souks, or sunbathe on the restful roof terrace. 04.00 p.m. is the time for tea and cakes. You will have the evening yoga and meditation class at 05.30 p.m.

On new years eve, we will head into the atlas mountains for an action packed afternoon. Starting at a Moroccan Kasbah, we will head out for a 2.5 hour walk into the local foothills, villages and farmland, before return to the kasbah for our evening practice and a special new year's eve dinner.

Sarah Nunn

Sarah Nunn has been practising yoga for seven years, and completed her Teach Yoga 200hr Yoga Alliance course in September last year. She has practised many schools of yoga and in many different countries, including assisting at a yoga retreat in Morocco in 2012. Sarah is especially interested in alignment and the spiritual aspects of yoga, including meditation. Her approach is thoughtful, inclusive and naturally mindful.

There is so much to love about this friendly north African country: its warmth -of both the weather and people, the wonderful food, the big horizons, the scent of orange and lemon trees, plus the astonishing variety of scenery: from mountains to desert, to spectacular beaches.

The sites in the north part of the city, such as the Medersa Ben Youssef, the Museum of Marrakesh and the Majorelle Gardens. Staying in the old medina is probably nothing like anything you have ever experienced before, so get lost a few times and soak up the ancient city life.

Dinner in the cozy dining room area, off the main courtyard, will be served at around 07.30 p.m. each evening, and we have left one evening, free for you to find your own restaurant in Marrakesh, or to join the group, if you would prefer.

Alcohol will be available to purchase with meals, and is at your own additional expense. We recommend keeping alcohol intake to a glass or two with evening meals, to maximise enjoyment of the morning yoga and to keep a quiet atmosphere!

    "Having already been on a Marrakesh New Year trip with Satvada Retreats in January 2014, I thought I'd know what to expect on a summer retreat to Essouria in June 2016. I was not disappointed and my expectations were excelled once more. I can't quite put my finger on what is different, but I'll do my best.     "I had a fab time on the Yoga retreat. Location, weather, food and classes were all excellent.The only minor thing was the fact the studio was not that big, I think they should have had a few less people to make it more comfortable. Rooms were large with a lovely balcony. Staff very friendly and wanted to please. I would recommend this holiday to friends.     "If you are looking for the perfect yoga break, Satvada's Croatian retreat fits the bill. Yoga and meditation twice a day just meters from the beach, in a glorious, peaceful setting. Daily walks through the olive groves - along the picturesque coastline or in the hills to the monastery - offer the opportunity to discover the beauty of the Island and the friendliness of the people. The villa is lovely and several rooms have a wonderful sea view. The food is a mouthwatering vegetarian gourmet treat! You will never be hungry! We loved it so much that we've booked another break with Satvada."

    "Having looked at several yoga retreats, we took 'pot luck' when we booked with Satvada. We couldn't have been luckier - the retreat in Croatia was perfect. Yoga sessions were tailored to suit the experience and ability of all the guests, providing both challenge and relaxation. In spite of not really being 'into' meditation I found these sessions appealing. The silent walk along the coast was delightful; a totally new and enjoyable experience. The venue - a beautiful villa close to the beach - was idyllic; the view from the yoga terrace (of flowers, sea and mountains) provided a stunning backdrop. All our needs were catered for - especially at meal times: local produce, from a garden adjacent to the villa, cooked to perfection. Walks were led by friendly guides; the pool and beach, together with the company of other guests, ensured a memorable holiday. It was all over much too soon."

    "Having spent time looking for a relaxed holiday suitable for a solo traveler, I couldn't be happier that I picked the Croatian retreat. The villa was beautiful and the other guests (of all ages and abilities) were welcoming and friendly. We were all wonderfully looked after - not least in terms of the plentiful and delicious vegetarian food! Some great walks, exploring parts of the island we wouldn't have found on our own, were arranged for us so we didn't have to worry about anything except turning up with the right footwear. The daily yoga sessions were rejuvenating in the mornings, setting us up for the day, and relaxing and meditative in the evenings, ready for dinner and wine or simply a nap by the pool. I liked the teacher's encouraging approach, helping us all go further in our practice, no matter how experienced or new to yoga we were. I've recommended Satvada to friends and am already planning my next holiday with them. I know I'll be well looked after and come home feeling refreshed and with a new enthusiasm for my yoga classes."

    "Just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you for a lovely Wellbeing Weekend in Marrakech. I got so much out of my time there and met some wonderful people. Since returning home, I have kept up my practice and find meditation so much easier to accomplish, which was one of my aims of the weekend.     "I can't recommend Satvada enough for the first-time yoga retreater! All my fears about being too inexperienced at yoga to go on a retreat were instantly allayed in the first class. Lucia's teaching style is wonderfully personal so that everybody in the class is looked after and encouraged individually. I felt a deeper connection with my practice developing over the course of the retreat that has left me with more commitment to and enthusiasm for yoga-a great boost for the novice student! Lucia's experience, knowledge and attitude were truly inspiring. The evening meditation sessions were relaxing and energising but also gave us an insight into the benefits of integrating yoga and meditation into daily life to reduce stress and increase wellbeing. All this was accompanied by huge doses of laughter, a great mix of people, delicious food, a stunning Riad and the beauty and hospitality of Morocco. I can't wait for the next one."

    "I loved the weekend and felt very relaxed driving home. I found the yoga stimulating and, although I have been practicing for a long time, I learnt lots and liked your approach so thank you. The accommodation at Potash barns is great; food, ambiance also lovely! I also think the mindfulness meditation combined with yoga is a great combination, they really compliment each other and Shamash is a great teacher. So it's all good from me and I hope to be able to come to another retreat....abroad if possible!"

    "Thank you for a wonderfully restorative weekend at Potash Barns, Suffolk. It is rare to find a package that more than lives up to its promotional description. Before we arrived we were a little concerned about our suitability for the classes, both in terms of experience and personal fitness. However, we were immediately reassured by the small class. We also really enjoyed the accommodation, our own private lounge, friendly hosts and the walks in lovely peaceful surroundings of the Suffolk countryside. The food did not disappoint and was another highlight. I was impressed by the lengths taken by the hosts to accommodate all the dietary requirements and we loved the great variety of vegetarian dishes; also, time spent just chatting. I am already looking forward to the next weekend."
