    Santhi Yoga

PROS Pros: They were very very very ( can I add more :) ) helpful to me . It was my first time in India and they made sure I feel at home . I like how they presented the theories of kids yoga and how we practiced asanas in our class. :) I learned a lot from the teachers and I could say this course gave me more confidence in teaching yoga to my young students :)

Cheap yoga school with basic standards

CONS Cons: Teachers didn't always turn up for classes that students had paid for. Students not advised when teachers were no show so we ended up hanging around. Good was dreadful and not even sattvic diet which is what it should have been. We were kicked out of our accommodation half way through our stay for 3 nights due to an overbooking, real hassle having to repack and move everything including things we had in the fridge. Accommodation was average to basic. School Ian bear a busy road so constant traffic noise, it's not quiet at all. Every morning the staff made a fire to cook the food and the smoke filled the outside class space so it made doing pranayama pretty much impossible. The space we practiced in was to small for the group size, we kept hitting each other, and by midday it was dirty.

PROS Pros: Friendly and patient teachers when they did show up for class.

Organizer response: Hello Nina Farrimond, Thank you for your valuable feedback. We have noted your comments with regards to the service provided by us and please accept my sincerely apologize for the discomfort that may have caused. I would like to assure you that your comments will be shared with the teachers and other staff here for improvements to be made. However we have never "kicked out" any of our students from the accommodation. It was a weekend, so there was no class and students were all planning to go to stay in the beach for the weekend. So we requested you whether it is possible for you to change your rooms to another accommodation for two days and you happily agreed. You have even commented that the room we have arranged was really good.

  • Review by Retreat Client from United States

"I was very disappointed by the program. It was highly overpriced for the quality of what was provided. I would not have called it a retreat at all. For 600 USD for 7 days. I would have expected at least some comfort and better energy from the space where yoga and treatments took place. The guest house was far separated from the school where treatment and yoga were provided and wasn't very nice, and they didn't even want to cover the cost of air conditioning, which in south India during this time is a must! The yoga space was dirty and the mats were all worn and torn up, so it was good that I brought my own! The day was a strict regimen of yoga, breakfast, one Ayurvedic treatment, lunch, yoga philosophy and yoga again. This would have been fine except for the fact that generally when you are detoxing you should be in a place you can relax and feel the benefits, and the location of the center was not comfortable at all. It's a school, not a retreat center. They mainly do yoga teacher training there, so the others there were in a course, not doing a retreat, which meant Santhi's provision of a yoga philosophy course was just throwing me into the yoga teacher training course, which puts you somewhere in the middle of random parts of teacher training, which just felt strange. The Ayurvedic treatments were nice, and the staff was very friendly but that's about it. Even my 'consultation' with the Ayurvedic doctor felt like poor care. She determined my dosha and then gave me a piece of paper telling me what food I should be eating, but she failed to provide any real answers or support for the health concerns I had. It just felt like she didn't really care to actually help, she just through me into treatments without answering any questions as to why they were doing each treatment, or what the medication was that they were having me take. After the first day I asked to leave and receive a refund for the final 6 days I would not be staying since the quality of the retreat was so poor, but the director, Reshma, would not allow this. I don't have the funds to just throw away 600 USD, so I was essentially forced to stay somewhere that I was unhappy and uncomfortable. I thought this was very bad service, especially in work that is supposed to be healing. She did make some changes for me, which included providing AC and an additional treatment each day, but again this still did not change how I felt about the overall program. There were other things about the week that I wasn't comfortable with but I think I've voiced most of my issues with it. I think they may be able to advertise this as a week of yoga classes and Ayurvedic treatment experience, but not a retreat and people certainly should not be charged 600 or 650 USD for this."

"I had an amazing time with Santhi Yoga. What a team of people! Reshma was so helpful with everything and always at the end of the phone if you needed her. The food served there was organic vegetarian prepared by their own chef. The food was absolutely bursting with amazing flavors, and the kind staff makes sure you get second helpings if you've got the room! The day started with beautiful chanting prayers, all staff and the morning yoga instructor got involved, bringing peace and joy to the heart for a great start. JP and Gino were two fantastic teachers! Loved them both! Very helpful for posture correction. The style of yoga is Sivananda and it was extremely well taught and easy to follow. I learned a lot from this style. Also picked up handy tips from JP..Treatments!!! I have never experienced anything so fabulous! Again, amazing staff so helpful and always with a smile :-) (a pair of beautiful twins.) The names of the treatments I cannot recall, the first four days were traditional massages with oils and special specific herb medicines. But wow the one that absolutely rocked my world was the milk, sandalwood and herbal medicine running back and forth on my forehead, falling down through my hair. The effect of this after its completion is amazing. I have never felt so relaxed. I still lie in bed at night and try to feel that feeling of the milk flowing over and back... and bring myself back to the wonderful smells and smiles of Santhi Yoga.I could not have turned 40 and a different chapter in my life in a better place... Thank you so much all."

"I attended the 2014 December 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training course! It really feels like coming to Santhi was meant to be! I was suppose to attend a course in the North India which completely fell through and at the very last minute contacted Reshma (literally the weekend before the course started) to see if they could fit me in by any chance ,which they could! At first I had mixed feeling, I really don't like the south of India, but then again I was finally going to do my YTT! I don't regret going one single bit! I even started liking the south, which was probably more to the serenity and sheer joy I felt from coming from the daily schedule at Santhi. We had some fantastic teachers, I absolutely adored JP who we had for every morning asana lesson and for the yoga teachings before lunch. He was just the type of teacher I had wished for, he said so many fantastic things and really put not only yoga in perspective for me, but also religion and spirituality! What I really loved about the course was the variety of teachers we came across. Santhi yoga really went out of their way so that we could experience different ways of teaching yoga! I would definitely recommend Santhi to anybody!"

"Santhi Yoga was the first place where I learnt yoga in its traditional way. I enjoyed every bit of my training program, which gave me time for some retrospection - to the spiritual aspects taught by J P. Sir. It taught me ways to deal with daily chores and to balance stress in my life, to observe and absorb different things around.Thank you all for the wonderful training, hospitality and life lessons provided during the study."
