Basic, intermediate, and advanced yoga

This course is designed for first-time and basic to advance yoga techniques. It is the right class for you if you want to learn the fundamentals of yoga in a group where everyone is new. The teachers and doctors will give you some background on yoga while you are seated, but come prepared to move.

You will walk out feeling embodied, empowered, and energized. Meditation in the yoga tradition is a systematic and logical approach to understanding, calming, and bringing some control to the mind and thoughts leading to the realization of who you truly are. The Shatkarmas consists of six techniques. They can make the body clean and strong, free of diseases, remove toxins, and improve concentration. It can also improve the flow of prana into the organs and the pranic meridians or nadis. The six techniques are: Dhauti, Bhasti, Neti, Trataka, Nauli, and Kapalabhati.

1. Neti

A nasal cleansing process intended to purify the nasal passages and bathe the sinuses. It can be performed in two ways: either using a neti pot to cleanse the passages with saline solution, or using a thread passed through the nostrils and out the mouth. These are called jala neti and sutra neti, respectively.

2. Dhauti

A cleansing process for the alimentary canal, including the oesophagus, the mouth, the stomach, intestines, and rectum. There are 11 types of dhauti to cleanse different parts of the gut. One popular way is to swallow a length of cloth in order to remove phlegm, bile, and impurities from the esophagus and stomach.

3. Nauli

A cleansing practice for the abdomen which uses the abdominal muscles to massage and stimulate the digestive organs. The muscles of the abdomen are projected forward then contracted in a wave-like movement that increases “bodily fire.” This practice can take a lot of practice to perform effectively, as it requires a lot of abdominal control.

4. Basti

A method for purifying the large intestine either with or without water. In the method with water, jala basti, the yogi sits in a tub of water and draws up water into the rectum by practicing uddiyana bandha and using the nauli kriya. Then the water is expelled.

5. Kapalabhati

A breathing technique which means “shining skull.” In this practice, the breath is forcefully exhaled through the nostrils by strongly drawing in the abdominal muscles after which the inhalation happens naturally. This is repeated 20 times in quick, rhythmic succession.

6. Trataka

Also called the blinkless stare, is a technique for cleansing the eyes and improving mental focus. One method involves gazing at the flame of a candle. This is thought to increase blood circulation to the eyes and help strengthen them.

A diet that is wholly conducive to the practice of yoga and spiritual progress is called yogic diet. Eating can also be considered a practice in which you seek universal balance. Like yoga, eating is a highly personal activity as you learn to adapt your needs to the many popular nutritional systems and diets. Developing a mindful eating practice can provide a ground that truly supports and nurtures your yoga.

What you eat, not only influences your physical well being, but also your emotions and thoughts. Yoga does not dissect food into proteins, carbohydrates, or fats; instead it classifies them according to the effect they have on the body and mind, into three types - Satva, Rajas, and Tamas. Tamasic food is the kind of food which makes you lethargic or sluggish, while Rajasic food is that which brings about activity or restlessness. Whereas, Sattvic food is the kind which makes you feel light, energetic, and enthusiastic.

Sattvic foods are those which purify the body and calm the mind. They stimulate the body and mind into action. Cooked food that is consumed within 3-4 hours can be considered Sattvic foods.

Being of Sattvic or “pure” mind is the goal when you practice, but this quality is also present in the food that you eat. Ideally, a yogic diet would be rich in Sattvic foods. Sattvic foods are generally fresh vegetables, grains, legumes, mild spices, and mildly sweet foods. However, a Sattvic diet does include some dairy products such as cow milk and ghee.

According to Ayurveda, this is the best diet for a yogi to adopt. It helps keep the mind clear, as opposed to Rajasic or Tamasic. A Sattvic diet is also soothing for the digestive system and helps keep things moving.

The correct yogic diet is the one that does as little harm as possible, builds your prana and sattva, and makes you feel good physically and emotionally.

In 24 days of activities, the participants will experience different yogic varieties of food. In the first 2 days, the guests will be having typical Indian foods like chappathy, rice, dosa, etc. After that, you will be provided organic fruit and later, juice diet. This diet will be supervised under experienced naturopathy doctor and a dietitian.

Arrival by airplane

The participants have to come to Chennai International Airport (MAA). Transfers from this airport is available for 4,000 INR per person.

Arrival by taxi

By taxi, guests can come to the ashram by traveling 140 kilometers with the duration of 3 hours 30 minutes. For taxi, you will be charged 3,000 INR, once you've reached Pondicherry. Through Viluppuram road, you can reach the ashram in 12 kilometers away from the Pondicherry bus stand.

Arrival by bus

By public bus, you will be charged 350 INR, once you've reached Pondicherry. Through Viluppuram road, you can reach the ashram in 12 kilometers away from the Pondicherry bus stand.

Arrival by train

By train, you have to check the train timetable. You will have to pay 250 INR approximately. You have to get off the train at Villainur railway station. From there, you will be picked up and taken to the ashram. The ashram is just 2 kilometers from the Villainur railway station and 13 kilometers away from the Pondicherry railway station.
