Where else in the world are your primary concerns a) the temperature of your beer, and b) trying not to get too much sun? Where each and every day is a cycle of eating, surfing, yoga and drinking, and the nights are spent partying it up in the streets of San Sebastian or just connecting with other like minded travelers at the surf house. Wake up surrounded by verdant hills and coastal views, to the sound of rustling leaves and twittering birds at the surf house (it’ll make you never want to leave)!
The lively hostel is a converted, three-story farmhouse in the hills of the Basque Country. There is one large dorm room, which is split internally by a separator, and three smaller rooms of five and six beds each. Dorms have an 8 person occupancy.
Please note that during high season the hostel is very busy and accommodates up to 50 guests at a time so if you have any requests for sleeping arrangements please get in touch prior to arrival and the team will endeavor to accommodate your needs.
San Sebastian Surf Camp, a little slice of paradise located in the natural reserve Pagoeta, is a combination of breathtaking landscapes (mountains and beaches), intriguing Basque culture, award-winning food, insane waves, and beautiful weather. What’s better than getting the best of both worlds, experiencing the amazing landscapes of the Basque country and still heading to the beach every day?
Your meals are prepared, your beers chilled, your beds made for your arrival and your party nights pre-organized. What a treat! The friends you’ll make at the San Sebastian Surf Camp are some of the best folk around, open-minded, international travelers gathering from all over the world, so there’ll be languages to learn and stories to hear over a beer or seventeen.
The surf house doors are open to all levels of surfers. Never touched a surfboard in your life? The surf instructors will have you on your feet and high riving your mates in no time. On the other hand, if you are already a shredder, the instructors will be able to advise you on the best breaks and make sure you get shacked before your afternoon siesta. Surf lessons are taken at local, beginner friendly beach, Zarautz, with transport to and from the surf house on San Sebastian Surf Camp’s own bus.
San Sebastian Surf Camp will explain the dynamics of the ocean and analyze the current conditions you will be surfing in. They will explain surf safety and the correct techniques used in entering the ocean, paddling, catching waves, and standing up. They will assist you in getting your first waves and give feedback on your surfing techniques.
The San Sebastian Surf Camp instructors are all fully certified and carry their first aid and ocean safety award. Supervision from a certified surf instructor is only during the surf lessons included in the package. Please always reach out to your surf instructors to find out if the conditions are fitting to your level when you are surfing by yourself.
This is a guide itinerary, but not like a school camp itinerary - quite the contrary. This will give you an idea of what a day might look like for you at San Sebastian Surf Camp. There’s always something for you to do, but it's your holiday so feel free to lay on the beach, have a beer or go on an adventure with your new campmates instead. Plans are always subject to change. They find the best time to surf during the day, depending on swell and tide, you can be surfing anytime. If the swell is not right, they can postpone it for another time or find a new activity participate in.
Each person will receive one surf introduction surf lesson, and from thereon surf guiding with certified surf instructors will be provided.
Wake up to a homely, cooked breakfast down in the chillout area and exchange stories from last night’s antics. Fuel up, read the surf report and get excited to head out surfing. Jump on the surf bus and enjoy the ride down through the national park to the beach, grab your board and either scout out the best banks on the beach or head into your lesson with one of the surf instructors.
When you're all surfed out, you’ll either have lunch in the sunshine at the beach together or head back up to the house for a hot lunch and a cold sangria. If you’re feeling bendy, join a yoga class on the yoga deck. You could head out hiking, go into town and explore, join in on a Spanish class, head back down to the beach for another surf (non-supervised), or just relax!
In the afternoon, you will most likely find yourself hanging out at the house watching the sun go down and sharing stories or becoming lord of the ping pong table.
If you’re the sensible type, you can get in a good night’s sleep and be up bright and early for sunrise yoga and breathtaking views over the valley. If some more drinks, music and exploring sound more like you, then either join them on a pintxos tour in Zarautz or San Sebastian, a trip to a traditional Basque cider house or maybe even one of the many festivals that may be on during your stay.
One daily 1-hour yoga class is included in the price and is optional for guests. The instructors teach Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga yoga. The yoga sessions can be anytime during the day depending on the surf conditions and tide. You will either perform yoga in the morning before the surf or after the surf lesson in the afternoon.
Note: Please keep in mind times and schedules can vary due to waves and conditions of the water or other activities. This is just a general plan how a day in the surf house could look like.
The camp is located in the town of Aia in the hills just behind the surf beach of Zarautz. The location provides the best of both worlds with close proximity to beautiful San Sebastian town and the beach with the freedom to retreat to the surf house in the hills for some peace and quiet. The home is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of San Sebastian city whilst still being easily accessible by train, bus or car.
Spending your time for this surf camp, you will get 3 hearty chef-prepared meals every day and dietary requirements are catered for. Moreover, you can have your lunch on the beach or in the house, and eat in the sunshine after your surf.
There’s a bunch of activities on offer, from cliff-jumping and hiking, for the adrenaline junkies, to pinto tours through the Michelin-starred streets of San Sebastian for the foodies.

If you plan to travel by airplane, arriving at Bilbao Airport (BIO) is the easiest option. There is Pesa Airport Bus Do50B that leaves every 30 minutes out front of the airport directly to the pick up spot in San Pelaio Station Zarautz. You may ask the driver to alight at the station. Moreover, San Sebastian Surf Camp offers free pick ups from Zarautz (San Pelaio) at 09:00, 13:00 and 19:00 on request.
If you arrive by bus in San Sebastian, simply walk across the road from the bus station to the Euskotren and jump on a train in the direction of Bilbao to San Pelaio Train station in Zarautz for your pre-arranged pickup.
Please note that San Sebastian Surf Camp provides free transfers from San Pelaio station in Zarautz at 09:00, 13;00, and 19:00. It is important to inform them which one you would like to jump on ahead of time, make sure to send San Sebastian Surf Camp an inquiry when booking. If you are unable to make it for the last 19:00 free transfer, please call or email San Sebastian Surf Camp to arrange to pick up.
The train station in the center of San Sebastian offers connections to numerous Spanish cities including Madrid and Barcelona and to international destinations such as Paris and Lisbon. If you arrive by Renfe train, jump on the Euskotren to San Pelaio station.
There is also an underground railway, Metro Donostialdea, a train connection with Bilbao and cities along the Basque coast such as Zarautz. The service also links Hendaye (France) and the SNCF, French rail service, with Lasarte passing through Donostia. You can catch this train to San Pelaio station in Zarautz from Bilbao.
