During this retreat, you will have the experience of staying at Japanese traditional homestays (ryokan), temple accommodation (shukubo), and hotels.

All levels and abilities are welcome in this retreat. You will enjoy yoga practice and explore the land of rising sun through its many beautiful cities, from Tokyo to Hakone, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Kyoto, Nara, Koyasan, and Osaka.

Day 1 – Narita / Tokyo

On arrival at Narita or Haneda you can activate your Japan Rail Pass and hop on the Narita Express or Tokyo Monorail to Tokyo immediately for a three-night stay in the Japanese capital. You have the rest of the day at leisure to explore Tokyo.

Day 2 – Tokyo

Visit traditional Tokyo – the Buddhist temple of Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon) and Ueno on the east side; and Tsukuji Fish Market, the world’s largest fish market. Yoga session in the afternoon.

Day 3 – Tokyo

Morning tour of Japan’s vibrant capital visiting the site of the Imperial Palace and the famous Ginza district. Visit modern Tokyo – Harajuku, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Roppongi- on the west side. Yoga session in the morning.

Day 4 – Hakone

Train to Hakone and free time to visit magnificent setting of Mount Fuji and take a cable car ride to visit the sulphurous hot springs at Owakudani. Stay in Hakone for two nights at a ryokan. Yoga session in the afternoon or evening.

Day 5 – Hakone

The day is at own leisure. Yoga session in the morning.

Day 6 – Hiroshima & Miyajima Island

Travel by train to Hiroshima. Arrive and check–in to the hotel or traditional ryokan for two nights. The rest of the day is free to relax at leisure. Yoga session in the afternoon or evening.

Day 7 – Hiroshima & Miyajima Island

The next morning you will have time to explore Hiroshima and Miyajima independently. Visit Miyajima Island with perhaps the most photographed site in Japan – The Floating Torii Gate. Explore many shrines and temples, sample local goodies like maple leaf shaped cakes before crossing the sea and visiting the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. Stroll through the park and discover the many memorials, monuments and statues before heading into the museum itself. Yoga session in the morning.

Day 8 – Kyoto

In the morning travel to Kyoto and check–in to our ryokan for three nights. After check-in we go to Arashimaya to see the famed Bamboo Grove and Tenryu-ji Temple.

Day 9 – Kyoto

Start our day with a visit to a kimono rental place and get fitted with your own kimono for the day! (optional)

Stroll through the beautiful traditional streets of Ichinen-zaka and Ninen-zaka. Walk to Kiyomizu-dera and Kodai-ji. Afterwards visit the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), continue to Nijo Castle surrounded by stunning gardens and take a walk down Nishiki Market. End the day with a tea ceremony.

Day 10 – Nara

Day tour to Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital and was considered the cradle of Japanese culture and arts, with an extraordinary abundance of temples and Buddhist monasteries.

Visit Todaiji temple, the world’s largest wooden building and home to Japan’s largest Buddha. From there head to Nara’s most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha, Shin-Yakushiji Temple and a leisurely wander through Nara ‘Deer’ Park. On the way back from Nara, visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, which was used in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”.

Day 11 – Koyasan

Leave luggage in Osaka and travel light by train and cable car to Koyasan, a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a sacred place of Buddhism. Built on top of a wooded mountain at nearly 1000 meters above sea level, Mount Koya’s temples form a village that will transport you to a different world and allow you to enjoy a magical atmosphere. Stay at one of the temple's accommodation facilities called shukubo and experience the ascetic training of the Shingon Buddhist sect. Dinner is included. Yoga session in the afternoon or evening.

Day 12 – Koyasan

The day is at own leisure. Visit the many temples and/or you can try other cultural/religious experiences as well like hand-copying of sutras and ajikan meditation, both leading to your spiritual well-being (at extra cost). You can also participate in the morning rituals. Dinner is included. Yoga session in the morning.

Day 13 – Osaka

Travel to Osaka for the final leg of our trip. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the big city. Visit Osaka Castle and Dotonbori, thronged with an unbelievable number of restaurants and amusement facilities. The rest of the day is free to relax at leisure.

  • Patricia Olabre

    Patricia has been a full-time yoga teacher since she completed her 500-hour teacher training course with the Krishnamacharya Healing Yoga Foundation under Marc Beuvain in London. She is also a certified British Wheel of Yoga teacher. She finished the perinatal yoga foundation course with Birthlight in 2010 and a year later, the mother and baby yoga integrated course with Yogacampus and Sitaram Partnership. She is qualified as a children's yoga teacher through YogaBugs and Yoga'd Up when she first started teaching in 2008. She has recently been certified to share the benefits of Yin yoga.

This retreat will take place in Tokyo, Hakone, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Kyoto, Nara, Koyasan, and Osaka.

During this retreat, you will be served daily delicious and vegetarian breakfast made from local produce.

    "Cuba for me was an amazing experience. An eye opener to a dignified, hospitable and generous people despite the lack of resources they/ we at times had to manage without like soap, light bulbs, toilet seats. It is not a real problem for us to manage with less services than you might expect; its part of an authentic introduction to a country that is so locked into its socio - economic /political reality. Yoga with Pat I always find to be a special experience, translated onto the rooftop of Havana, the surreal beauty of the beach at Cayo Levisa, I'm speechless. The wonderful fresh food and yoga provided the grounding for what was at times a pressing travel schedule. The outstanding highlights were the visit to Che Memorial and Buena Vista Social Club, not to mention the rickshaw ride there - i will remember that as long as I live. The salsa classes were brilliant fun/ learning, a new passion in the making. I cannot thank you enough Pat for your guidance and commitment into this beautiful eclectic world of yoga and travel."

    "I had a fantastic time in Cuba. It was well organised. There was no hiccup. The guides are good and well informed. The warm and balmy night at the Hotel Nacional was not to be missed. The last night at Buena Vista was a good wrap up altogether with the classic Cuban salsa music. Oh the salsa classes were enjoyable. It was lovely. Patricia is a very good teacher and she corrects our pose when it is incorrect and she has the patience to teach. I really loved the yoga session by the beach at Cayo Levisa when the sun was about to set. Of places of interest, they were all nice and memorable, each has it own charm. Vinales has beautiful views of mountains and fields, Cayo Levisa has beautiful and warm waters and clean beaches and Trinidad has lovely live music everywhere and not forgetting Havana, the beautiful old vintage American cars. On the whole, I would really love to go back again."

    "Two weeks of yoga holiday with Patricia in Philippines was one of my best yoga holidays so far. The three days of island hopping was full of fun with lots of swimming and kayaking in the clear blue South China Sea. We were on the go all the time watching sunset one evening and having dinner on the beach front. Never a dull moment .Patricia is a wonderful and a very caring yoga teacher and a tour organizer. Patricia always made sure we have plenty of food and she had brought us to some fantastic restaurants. This is a holiday whereby yoga is not the main focus compared to a yoga retreat.
