During this yoga teacher training, you will be staying at a yoga ashram in Mysore, the main location of Samyak Yoga. The yoga shala at Samyak Yoga ashram is structured so that it can accommodate around 40 students at a time. It allows the students to practice with the feel of vastness.

There are 18 student rooms, all single occupancy with attached bathrooms and a Western closet. The rooms are vast and built with south Indian bricks, which keep the temperature calm and comfortable for the practice and relaxation with hot water available.

There are no systems or devices available in the ashram for the use of the students, and hence, if you need to browse or Skype, they recommend bringing systems such as laptops, phones, or tablets along. However, the internet facility is not allowed in the yoga shala as it distracts the focus from the process of learning.

Please note that the yoga ashram is a place wherein the practice, teaching, and discussions related to yoga take place. It is not a religious place. Samyak Yoga ashram is specifically established for the yoga teacher training programs and the entire team is completely committed to it. You cannot stay as long as you want in Samyak Yoga ashram as it is a yoga destination wherein yoga teacher training courses are taught most often every month.

What is traditional Hatha yoga?

Hatha yoga is a yoga method practiced based on Ashtanga yoga or Raja yoga of Patanjali. Hatha yoga texts such as Hatha yoga pradeepika, shiva samhita, and gheranda samhita are the primary sources for the practice of traditional Hatha yoga. Hatha yoga is a method wherein the two seeming to be different energies "ha" and "tha" energies are balanced.

Hatha yoga has been the most practical approach, a systematic method to transform the human system. It primarily focuses on the physical body to access-control and sublime the mind. Asanas and kriya, the cleansing techniques of yoga, are the major tools to begin with in Hatha yoga practice.

There is no yoga practice without following the tradition on the first hand. Yoga has always been the technique offered by the teacher to the student. Hence, first of all, every yoga practice is always backed by its tradition. As there are so many varieties of Hatha yoga practices unlike Ashtanga yoga, the quest to know what is traditional Hatha yoga is valid.

Every Hatha yoga practice is different

Hatha yoga, the foundation of all the asana - pranayama practices, has been an individual practice. It has to be understood without the influence of modern fitness perspective. Yoga teacher always teaches the student in front of him, not the techniques the teacher has learnt. A yoga teacher can not present just what he knows, instead he should have the ability to adapt, modify, and make it accessible to the student based on the abilities and limitations of the student.

Basic framework for Hatha yoga practice

There is a basic framework to be followed in the Hatha yoga tradition. Hatha yoga tradition emphasizes on the kriya - asana combination as the first step supported with the sattvic food. Kriya does not necessarily mean only shat kriyas (six purification techniques). But every purification technique which removes the toxins from body and mind.

Therefore, you will have mantra chanting, japa (repetition of a specific mantra), jala neti, trataka, kirtans (inculcating humbleness), and traditional meditation techniques for the initiation to pratyahara, etc. as part of the Hatha yoga practice. These support the traditional Hatha yoga asana practice.

Traditional Hatha yoga asana practice

Traditional Hatha yoga asana practice can be basically categorized into three components, which are standing, sitting, and finishing. These three components comprise the basic framework of the asana practice.

Standing asanas

Standing asanas are always the foundation of asana practice. They are for building the strength, balance, and opening the hips. Standing asanas create the necessary foundation of the spine, the entire system to get in tune with the practice that is followed. You will not be able to fuse standing asanas while practicing sitting or add a set of sitting asanas while creating the foundation with standing asanas.

Sitting asanas

After a sufficient time spent in the standing series, you get into sitting set. Sitting asanas here include all variety of asanas on the mat, i.e. forward folds, twists, hip openings, back bends, and lying down on the spine and even on the stomach. These asanas are traditionally considered to be the main elements of the practice. You will practice standing asanas for the sitting sets. Sitting asanas get the textual reference too as they are the most important elements among all.

Finishing asanas

Finishing asanas generally bringing the calmness, relaxing the system, and creating the mental atmosphere for the pranayama and meditation. This is also very significant element as it allows the system to swallow the benefits of the entire asana practice. This generally includes inversions such as sarvangasana series, shirshasana series, and shavasana.

Elevating your practice

The early morning practice brings you the traditional style of Hatha yoga. This practice is built slowly from the first week to the last week. The intensity gets deeper from intermediate to advance level of practice. You will be discovering subtle alignments of every asana with its variations, techniques, and tips to practice are explored every day in asana clinic.

As a skilled Hatha yoga teacher, you should know the safe practices as well as different levels of teaching the same asanas. It is also important to explore, practice, and get experience of art of hands-on adjustments. These hands-on adjustments can really enhance your understanding of asanas and teaching Hatha yoga.

You will also be working on building your own self practice as this is one of the aspects yoga teachers lack. You will work on building and tasting the personal practice of Hatha yoga, the foundation of a Hatha yoga teacher.

Becoming a Hatha yoga teacher

From day two, you will be teaching in small groups. At the end of every session, you will receive the feedback on your teaching. The experience of teaching every day and getting tips to improve the teaching transforms you as a Hatha yoga teacher. As days pass, the intensity and duration of teaching gets into next levels. You will explore dimensions of teaching. It is fascinating to look at the practice from the teacher’s perspective.

You will be guided on how the Hatha yoga modules are created traditionally. You are also required to create yoga class modules and teach them. By doing these, you start becoming a complete Hatha yoga teacher who can practice, create, and teach your own module.

Practice and teach beyond asanas

You will be discussing yoga sutras of Patanjali, Hatha yoga, its origin and evolution, chakras, and nadis with their implications on the practice, etc. during the philosophical sessions. During the training, you will be practicing pranayama and meditation every day. The inner changes that you experience due to the systematic, progressive practice of pranayama and meditation transforms you in ways that cannot be explained.

You will be a Hatha yoga teacher if you are able to teach pranayama, meditation, etc. along with the asanas. Otherwise, you will be an asana teacher. During the training, you will be guided on how to teach pranayamas, meditation techniques, etc. Kriyas are another important aspect of a yoga teacher. You will be practicing kriyas, such as jalaneti and trataka every week.

This training can be a life-transforming experience, if you prepare with regular practice of asanas (the least) and prepare the body-mind for the intensive training.
