One day prior to your retreat, you are recommended to arrive in San Jose. You will be staying at a hotel near the airport in San Jose. For the next eight days of your retreat, you will be staying at the Samasati Nature Retreat.

Their sanctuary is set in a 250 acre Costa Rican rainforest, yet provides you with the comfort and convenience of a modern resort. It comprises a restaurant, a lounge, a spa, three types of accommodations, as well as a gazebo and Jacuzzi. Each of these elements is integrated harmoniously into the rainforest and is designed to reinforce your connection to nature.

There are practice spaces specifically oriented and designed to facilitate transformation, breakthroughs, celebrations, and moments of bliss. The two buildings, screened hexagonals with large verandas, are surrounded by thriving jungle and gardens. The larger space, which is the meditation hall, is 1,292 square feet while the smaller yoga studio is 969 square feet. Both have rich wood flooring and are equipped with yoga props as well as a sound system.

There are no air-conditioners here, but the rainforest regulates the temperature naturally. The screened ventilation in your accommodation lets you breathe clean, natural air. There is no television on the property, but Wi-Fi is available at the restaurant and lounge areas. There are ten wooden cottages built with wood reclaimed from the area within walking distance from the main reception and restaurant area. All have spacious verandas overlooking the rainforest or the Caribbean Sea.

Your room for this retreat will be in the classic casita. These casitas are each in their own secluded area in the forest and have an additional lofted sleeping area. There are two single beds on the main level and a double bed in the loft, a private bathroom, and a terrace with a hammock, which is set in a little tropical garden planted with local flora.

Through a daily spiritual practice, whether practicing yoga, chanting mantra, walking along the beach, or listening to your heart, you can brighten the light within. In this way, you are able to nourish your soul’s longing and reconnect with your authentic self, embodying your own personal truth and potential. Through an open flow and giving and receiving grace, you allow your light to shine brightly, standing as a beacon of light and love for those around you.

During your week together in this women's retreat, you will experience the wisdom and transformative power of mother nature, which is a true manifestation of the divine feminine in this world.

Explore the mountain rainforest, swim in the Caribbean Sea, read a book or take a nap in your hammock while listening to nature's serene soundscapes, enjoy a buffet of fresh, locally sourced meals and mindful eating, participate in daily yoga offered by experienced certified instructors, or find time for adventure or quiet meditation, Reiki, or massage.

Take time for you while opening your heart to the company of new friends and an exuberant community of women. Recharge, reconnect, and embrace your capacity to live in joy, harmony, and abundance, and return home shining brighter in your rejuvenated, radiant self.

You will enjoy guided nature trek through the rainforest to Cascade falls and rejuvenating waterfall pool. You will also hike to the natural sanctuary of Violo waterfall within the Bribri Indian Reservation in the Talamancan montane forest region. Additionally, you will also make a visit to the Jaguar Animal Rescue Center and go on a chocolate making tour.

  • Jocelyn Farrell

Jocelyn initially began practicing yoga as a means to reduce stress and cultivate mindfulness, although she quickly became drawn to its spiritual and healing powers. Having discovered a connection with spirit through hikes in the woods and swimming in the Adirondack lakes as a young girl, Jocelyn is grateful to be able to deepen this relationship through the power and teachings of Bhakti yoga. As a 200-hour registered yoga teacher trained by Gopi Kinnicutt, Jocelyn aspires to nurture her students’ awareness of their true self.

  • Karen Score

Karen began her yoga journey in 1999 as an effort to recover from illness. Along the way, she fell in love with the practice of yoga, particularly in the tradition of Bhakti yoga, which is the yoga of love and devotion. She is continuously deepening her knowledge by embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage to India for several weeks each year. Karen’s classes are truly an offering from her heart. She creates a nurturing space for her students to feel safe and offers them the freedom to discover their own innate wisdom and become their own best teacher.

This retreat will take place in Costa Rica.

Sitting in the mountain overlooking the rainforest and Caribbean Sea below, the open-air restaurant provides a dramatic and unique dining experience. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served buffet style with selections ranging from Caribbean fusion to Mediterranean, Asian, and to Central American.

Most of their cuisine is vegetarian. Chicken and fish delicacies are available whenever you choose. Seafood is drawn daily from sea and fruit is purchased from local farmers or picked on site. Organic products are the first choice ingredients.

There is a fun vibe in the Samasati kitchen where music, banter, and laughter are part of the cooking process. You can taste the love in the food. Their staff creates extraordinary culinary experiences for guests where in-season, local ingredients make every meal feel like a private tasting event.

The restaurant includes a specialty bar, which serves unique coffee, tea, wine, beer, and fresh cold-pressed juices. The bread is baked daily, chocolate comes from nearby organic cacao plantations, and the staff will happily accommodate requests made in advance for raw, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, or soy free dishes. Don’t forget to leave a little room in your stomach because every evening ends with an indulgent dessert.

Spend your time in the resort taking advantage of the tranquil environment for reflection and rejuvenation, explore nearby towns and beaches, or engage in one of the many tours and adventure excursions in the vicinity.

At Samasati Nature Retreat, you move at your own pace, explore, and discover with guided nature treks, waterfall hikes, dips in a natural pool, bird watching, and daily yoga classes. You can also relax and let go, master the art of doing nothing in your hammock, or lose track of time soaking in the hot tub.

If culture, beaches, sun, surf, social connection, and shopping are more your thing, their shuttle service drops guests off just a few miles away, in the lively Caribbean town of Puerto Viejo. There you will find some of the best beaches, snorkeling, and surf spots in all of the world. In addition to sun and sand, this laid back, yet lively town is home to an outstanding array of international restaurants, boutiques, bars, coffee shops, farms, tours, and excursions.

Each day, your adventures are fuelled with delicious, fresh buffet meals and round the clock coffee and tea served in their open air restaurant. After sunset, fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the rainforest and wake up refreshed to the breathtaking sight of sun reflecting off the Caribbean Sea.

Samasati Nature Retreat offers relief and rejuvenation with treatments rooted in nature by capturing the healing powers of plants and preserving village remedies. Choosing all-natural super food ingredients from the Caribbean, they use flowers, leaves, bark, roots, seeds, and fruits of indigenous, naturally cultivated plants. The products are then artfully combined to provide a wide range of authentic beauty and wellness rituals.

Their menu is served by highly sought after international guest therapists and gifted local practitioners. These experts combine local plants and fruits to provide nutrient-rich living food for your skin. Cucumbers are sliced to create hydrating eye masks, local salt crystals are blended with virgin coconut oil for body scrubs, local cacao is grated, aloe vera is squeezed, juices are pressed, and raw chocolate is warmed for deeply nourishing body masks.

"Fantastic stay, place, owners and staff! If you want to experience the jungle from within, this is the adequate place! Don't come here with city like expectations - this is the rainforest with creatures and bugs. Live the magic getting woken up by the sound of the jungle. Everything was perfect, from the food, the yoga, the walking trails, the interaction with the staff. Tune in jungle fever! Thanks again, Neil"

"We chose Samasati for our recent Yoga Mandali "Grace in Nature" Women's retreat in Costa Rica primarily due to the fact that it was not the rainy season on the southern Caribbean side of Costa Rica in October. It was also portrayed beautifully in the photos and had everything we were looking for in a retreat center. "

"The process of planning out all the details of the retreat was made so easy with the help of the reservations staff, especially Liseth. "

"Upon our arrival at Samasati, we pleasantly and warmly greeted by the staff and the general manager, Scott. We arrived just before sunset and were just stunned by the beauty of the rainforest we were immersed in and the incredible view of the coastline a few miles below us."

"We woke the next morning at sunrise by the calls of the howler monkeys and the multitude of sounds that exist in the rainforest. Beautiful Noise!"

"We were surrounded by butterflies, toucans, eagles, hummingbirds, frogs, sloths, etc...(Yes, lots of insects and spiders too but that was all part of the adventure!)"

"The flora and trees and plants are too beautiful and diverse to describe!"

"Each and every meal was absolutely delicious and artfully prepared. Our last evening was made extra special by the special attention and care the staff put in to decorate the dining area and our table with flowers and leaves from the rainforest! It was truly gorgeous!"

"Another point worth mentioning about our stay was the night hike we took with Scott! Totally worth it! You will even see Tarantulas!"

"We had complete access to the yoga studio on the property the entire duration of our stay which made planning our classes and activities very easy. The studio is lovely and set deep in the rainforest."

"Everything about Samasati was perfect! I'm already looking forward to next time!"

"A wonderfully nurturing and healing environment in a rain forest on the Caribbean. Samasati provided an escape for our family vacation in the most wonderful ways. With nature walks to waterfalls, a 24/7 hot tub with a view of the ocean, 2-story rustic Casitas with privacy and screened hammocks, yoga daily and massages (if you want them), it is a terrific place for all ages."

"I knew when my mother-in-law dried off in her birthday suit on her balcony that we would have all gotten what we came for. Yoga classes with Stephanie were more like yoga therapy, better than any other class I have ever had. She is an exceptional teacher. The food is wonderful. It is all fresh and clean. You are minutes from the beach and amazing people of Costa Rica! We can't praise Samasati enough. You have to be willing to deal with bugs and all kinds of animals, it is part of the experience."

"It is a great change of pace from the large resort vacations. It was just a wonderful low key week to spend in the rainforest with yoga in the morning, hiking trails, jacuzzi, delicious food, and just overall relaxing. You are about 10 to 15 minutes from Puerto Viejo. We went to town a few times, hit up the beach, bars and restaurants, and rode bikes around, which is just a great vacation overall. Staff is very friendly and accommodating (especially with the rides to town and back)."

"Best trip I have ever had. Complete quiet from humans, lots of noise from birds and howler monkeys. Just lovely. Saw Capuchin monkeys, a sloth, tons of toucans, and other birds, all on the property. Easy to get to local beaches via taxis; also easy to visit national parks, taxis are happy to pick you up when the staff calls them to come get you. Great, great vegetarian food, and coffee available very early in the morning, perfect for bird-watching from the open air deck at the dining hall."

"Bungalows were lovely- electricity, lots of hot water, and beautiful views of the jungle. No Wi-Fi at the bungalows, but plenty at the central dining hall, and didn't miss it in the bungalow. Too busy lying in the hammock on the veranda, looking at and listening to birds. Free yoga classes available morning and evening, if you want. I don't really do yoga, but I enjoyed these. Food is served buffet style, all you want, in the beautiful open air dining room. Wine and beer are available for purchase. Just wonderful."

  • Review by a traveler from Minneapolis, Minnesota

"I have traveled to Samasati twice and both times my exceptions were met and exceeded. I want to preface this review by saying I am not into yoga, but Samasati is still my favorite resort I have ever been to. Just because it is a yoga retreat doesn't mean you need to do yoga. I certainly didn't."

"I am a nature nerd, but not enough so to sleep on the ground in a tent. Samasati gives you the full rainforest experience with the comfort of beds and bungalows. The bungalows are glorious. They are huge and mostly screened in so you get a beautiful view of the rainforest and you can even see the ocean in the distance from some bungalows. "

"For me, this Samasati is heaven on earth. You need to take a 4x4 truck up a HUGE hill to get to the resort and you are then completely immersed in nature. You can hear the wildlife all day long - howler monkeys yell in the morning and all night long you will hear the frogs talking to each other. There are bugs and critters everywhere - including in your room. "

"You don't ever have to leave the resort if you don't want to. They have several hiking paths and even a small waterfall for you to explore. If you know where to look, you can spot so much wildlife. On my last visit, I went on a short hike on the property and saw a handful of frog species, several lizards, dozens of birds and even two Capuchin monkeys. On my last day, someone advised me that the easiest time to spot a sloth is at night after it rains - and they were right! Saw my first wild sloth. "

"For others, this situation may not be ideal. I have talked to a lot of people during my stays and most loved it, but two main problems cropped up for people. First if you don't like bugs, you need to learn to like them quickly. Second, if you like to have a night life on vacation, this is not a great place to stay. Because the resort is on top of a hill, the resort has a driver to being guests up and down, but he leaves at 9pm. And no, you can't walk up that hill. It is that big. "

"My other favorite thing about this resort is that it is great for solo women travelers. I never felt unsafe and the staff organized transport for me so I didn't have to worry about driving the 5 hours from San Jose to Samasati with someone sketchy."

"My only suggestion for the hotel is to bring back the books and field guides they had when I was there two years ago. I was disappointed that there were no reading and reference materials available in the common space anymore."

"Where to start - amazing ambient, very safe, helpful staff, warm hospitality, bungalows in the middle of the jungle, listening to monkeys shriek and tropical rain hitting roofs, enjoying view of the ocean, experiencing fantastic food, practicing yoga in a wonderful studio, when I put it all together, probably stay of the lifetime. Oh yes, I forgot that is only a few miles from one of the nicest beaches in the world. I will attach a few pictures, just to give you an idea of this amazing place."

"I had the luxury of attending a wedding at Samasati and the experience was beyond what I could of imagined. Let's start with the food, Funky, the cook was amazing! Everything was organic and fresh. The staff was very warm and ready to serve. My cabin was so beautiful with my own hammock to sit a enjoy the sounds of the jungle."

"Stephanie took us hiking and showed us all of the wonders that nature has to offer. I mean really the bullet ants were no joke. We saw rare animals and it was wonderful. Usually I am terrified of bugs being a city girl, but after getting educated I learned to blend with and appreciate the nature around me. Everything about Samasati was far beyond what I would want in a jungle retreat. Looking forward to the anniversary to return."

"My husband and I spent six days at the Samasati retreat for our friends' wedding. We stayed in a luxurious house number 4 with high ceilings, huge patios on both floors, big common area with full kitchen, a large bathroom with double sinks, and gorgeous views of the jungle. "

"The weather was sunny and warm most of the time with an occasional rain at night. The food was cooked to perfection sprinkled with love and yummy spices. It was a true feast for our senses: the soothing sound of the jungle, panoramic views of costa rica, deliciously fresh air and a warm ocean with black sand and white sand beaches. An eclectic Puerto Viejo is a short ride away. We were lucky to see two sloths and a monkey at the retreat. Will be definitely coming back again soon."

"I had the priviledge of staying in Samasati on October 19th to 22nd. I was looking for a place to disconnect, re-energize, and do yoga. My experience was everything and more! I am pretty demanding when it comes to yoga classes, being a teacher myself, and conscious of my personal needs. Stephanie's classes were everything I wanted and more! She can deliver a journey of self-exploration and self-realization with each class she gives, even its not always pretty what a student finds in her personal exploration through yoga."

"Yoga in its best is transformative, and thank God there are teacher like Stephanie who dedicate their lives to transform peoples lives. She allows her genuine self to be present every time she teaches. Her classes are always challenging, whether they are more active Vinyasa yoga, or passive Yin yoga. When student is open, the magic of yoga happens."

"How does one spell paradise? Samasati! This was truly one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. From the amazing casitas, to the fabulous views of the Caribbean, to the fresh vegetarian meals, this place has something for everyone. Imagine yourself immersed in the jungle, connected to nature, and all it has to offer and yet at the same time, having the opportunity to visit nearby Puerto Viejo or walk the beautiful beaches. I had such an amazing experience, it is truly difficult to put into words."

"There is nothing like doing yoga in the middle of the jungle, feeling connected to the earth or having a wonderful massage and hearing all the wildlife surrounding you with their beautiful songs. Staff was very friendly and approachable and would do anything possible to help you enjoy your stay, including booking any tours you might be interested in. The property was safe and secure and it was beautiful to sit in the jacuzzi at night, surrounded by stars, and seeing all the fireflies lighting up the night sky."

"This was my first visit to Costa Rica and it will not be my last. Definitely will not be my last visit to Samasati either. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone who is looking for something more personalized than a commercial hotel. Truly a paradise!"

"I was delighted at the location of Samasati Retreat. It is at the top of a mountain, in the jungle full of lush vegetation, flowers, birds, howler monkeys, and best of all, no mosquitoes. The casitas (individual bungalows) comes equipped with hammocks on the veranda and I was close to the hot tub, which was very welcoming after a day of zip lining and hiking. This was the perfect location to spend a few days."

"The retreat is very calm and serene, which is exactly what I was looking for. Stephanie and Scott are welcoming hosts and made my stay memorable starting with yoga at 6:30 in the morning and ending with a delicious vegetarian dinner and excellent coffee at the end of the day. The other staff are very helpful, accommodating, friendly, and always provided service with a smile. They arranged my transportation and excursions and provided very good advise whenever I needed it. Wi-Fi is available at the main lounge area, not in the casitas. I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious vegetarian meals every day. I enjoyed fish at lunch when I was in town, Puerto Viego, which was a 20-minute drive. "

"I really like Puerto Viego. It is a small town, not full of tourists. The beach is accessible to everyone and there are lots of very good restaurants. The local residents are friendly and there is an ATM at the bank on the main street. I relaxed and swam at the beach area close to the police station off the main street. US Dollars are accepted in most stores and restaurants. There are several shops with beautiful souvenirs at reasonable prices. Much better than the pricing at the airport."

"A few things to keep in mind in terms of getting to Samasati. The shuttle from San Jose airport leaves Denny's near the airport at 2:15 p.m, so make sure your flight arrive earlier during the day. The drive from the airport via the shuttle is approximately 5 hours on a beautiful road through the national park and cost 50 USD. It may take longer, depending on traffic. If your flight arrive late, then Samasati will arrange for you to stay at a hotel and then you can take the early morning shuttle. They will make all the arrangements for you."

"The other alternative is private transportation via Lancaster, which costs me 190 USD to return to the airport. I enjoyed the drive with Janny, the driver. We stopped for a delicious breakfast, stopped for photos, and anything else I wanted. Lancaster provide Wi-Fi in the car, but I was too busy enjoying the conversations with Janny and the beautiful drive to use the Wi-Fi. I will definitely return to Samasati. It is the perfect location to enjoy nature, yoga, and local town."

"This place was incredible and very special people work there and make the stay a joy. I guess others have already described it well, but it was transformational and a very moving experience from the views, to how elegantly rustic it was to the incredible meals, to the individual attention and most of all to Stephanie who personalized the whole experience with her caring and connection. Don't hesitate to go."

"On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it. When describing Samasati and its grounds, this quote rings especially true. It is a place to lose yourself and to find yourself. To slow down and relax, reflect, and relish in the lush, heavenly surroundings. It is enchanting this rainforest overlooking The Caribbean and Puerto Viejo. Birds abound: toucans, hummingbirds, raptors, and more. Sightings of monkeys and gentle sloths are common too. As you walk the grounds, fluttering by you will see brilliant Blue Morphos the most beautiful of butterflies, as well as frogs and reptiles of various hues."

"The accommodations are casitas perched atop a mountain, with hammocks beckoning for use, are rustic and charming. They are like tree houses, but with all the essentials. The views are stellar! Not surprisingly, Samasati attracts a soulful crowd. Here like-minded travelers connect easily. Our guru, Stephanie was incredible. Her high energy, generous spirit, and affable nature made for easy and very enjoyable company. Add to all of this, daily yoga and meditation, as well as delicious vegetarian fare. You will leave a different person from when you came in. If you have never traveled alone, or if you love yoga and meditation, or if you are going through a hardship, or if you simply need to check out for a bit, this is the place for you!"

"We booked a stay for five days. We enjoyed the rooms and the fact that you are in the jungle with only a few minutes ride to the beach. We rented a 4x4 to get around. The rooms were simple and great to get away from a busy schedule. The breakfast that is offered is great and the view is even better. We didn't explore much of the property because we would go out during the day to explore. Overall, a great place highly recommend it."

"Samasati Retreat was a wonderful experience and honeymoon. The staff was helpful and friendly. They all did their jobs amazingly. The location is breathtaking and personal. Samasati is perched on the side of a mountain that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. The wildlife is present and active, moreover the locals are friendly and helpful. All of the extra activities Samasati offer are worth the money and experience. I would love to live at Samasati. The Cabanas were very well taken care of and no issues with bugs or other intruders."

"Experience of a lifetime, but not for everyone. My husband and I came upon Samasati during our 4 weeks trip in Costa Rica, when looking for a new adventure. The adventure started on the steep ride up to the Retreat, which we hiked up and down a few times during our 8 days stay."

"Remembering all the time that you are in the rainforest is important. The cabins are charming with big windows (only screens) offering amazing views through the huge trees and the sounds of rain, birds, monkeys, and all kinds of creepy crawlers.Waking up at the break of dawn was an every day highlight, like listening in surround to each instrument of an orchestra practicing prior to the beginning of the concert. Sensational."

"The delicious vegetarian meals are different every day and beautifully displayed. We enjoyed full board so never worried about where and what to eat, which I highly recommend. Like many other guests, I suggested they publish a cookbook. I am anxiously waiting to purchase a few. The shared areas of Samasati were very well maintained and the dining area was especially clean. The rooms and the screens should be better maintained."

"I practice yoga at home regularly, but found the classes to be aimed more for the yoga teacher trainees. The front desk staff was especially friendly, helpful and professional. We had our own 4x4 car so were able to take several trips and hikes around the area. We have many incredible memories to enjoy from this and our entire trip to Costa Rica."

"Great experience. The staff is very friendly. They all speak English. They arranged everything for my trip to arrive and depart. Buffet was tasty and good veggie food. The rainforest is spectacular. Sleeping right in it to the sound of rain at night, very peaceful. The rain stopped during the day and I saw sloths, monkeys, parrots, toucans, potoos, hummingbirds galore, an electric blue butterfly, and many other amazing critters. They have a free shuttle into town and a Jacuzzi. This place is for nature lovers. I will visit again next year perhaps."
