Don Carlos Hotel

Due to the particular architectural configuration of the hotel, located amidst the historical neighborhood of Barrio Amn, in downtown San Jose, all of the rooms are different one from another. There are no two rooms that look exactly the same.

Samasati Nature Retreat

Samasati Nature Retreat accommodations are screened in and private rooms with a king size, a queen, a full or two single beds. The rooms are beautiful, with great verandas and spectacular views. Each room has a safe deposit box, fan, emergency light, as well as other amenities. The casitas are triple, double, and single bungalows, nestled in a lovely tropical garden. All bungalows have one bathroom with hot water and spacious verandas overlooking the jungle and the ocean.

You will spend a day in the International Center for Girls working with local children between the ages of 7 and 14 years old. The participants help with English classes, sewing projects, arts and crafts, or share a talent or skill of their own. Stations are set up and children rotate every 20 to30 minutes. The center is just a 20-minute walk from the entrance of Samasati. The other days are filled with yoga every morning and evening, zip lining or horseback riding, a visit to an animal rescue center, kayaking, Cahuita National Park, and an optional river rafting excursion on the return trip back to San Jose.

Day 1 Saturday

Arrive in San Jose, Costa Rica and transfer to the four-star hotel, Don Carlos, in the city. Get settled in your new surroundings until the welcome dinner at 18:00 on the hotels restaurant, Caf Amon.

Day 2 Sunday

After breakfast, the group will depart 08:30 for Samasati Nature Retreat near Puerto Viejo. You will pass through the chilly heights of Braulio Carriollo National Park, the steamy lowlands of Guapiles, the Caribbean port town of Limon, many banana plantations, and then follow the palm fringed coastal road south by the beach of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. You will arrive in time for lunch. The food is gourmet vegetarian and each meal is a treat. Enjoy the rest of afternoon relaxing prior to a group get-together at 16:30. A gentle yoga class will be offered every evening at 17:00 to 18:15 followed by dinner in the open air restaurant at 18:30. Each evening you can surrender to gravity as you sink into deep restorative poses. After allowing your muscles and connective tissues to release by holding these poses for several minutes at a time, you will be guided through gentle warm-ups and deep stretches. Breath work is incorporated after the physical practice to calm your mind for brief meditation.

Day 3 Monday

A Vinyasa yoga class will be offered every morning from 06:30 to 07:45. After breakfast, the group will go to Puerto Viejo to visit the Jaguar Animal Rescue Center then to a nearby beach. At the Jaguar Animal Rescue Center, you will have the opportunity to hold monkeys and see a wide variety of animals up close. Sack lunches will be provided so you can enjoy a picnic on the beach. The beach at Punta Uva is claimed to be one of the best beaches in the area. The group will return to Samasati after some beach time or you can stay in town and shop. Yoga will be offered from 17:00 to 18:15 followed by dinner.

Day 4 Tuesday

After yoga and breakfast, you will transfer to Peace through Yoga Foundations International Center for Girls. It is located in a rural area in the heart of the rainforest just minutes from Samasati. The name of the property is called El Yue. El Ye is a womens group initiative organized since 1994 in the Carbon 1 Community. As banana and vegetables growers, they started developing alternative activities that could allow them to improve their standard of living and be eco-friendly. You will meet some of the women and participate in the process of making chocolate during the visit. The afternoon will be spent with the girls (ages 7-12) doing a variety of activities, including teaching English, reading books, assisting with math assignments, and implementing educational enrichment stations.

Day 5 Wednesday

Following yoga and breakfast, the group will head out for the famous canopy tour where you will zip from tree to tree in the jungle. There are 15 stations where you will enjoy approximately two hours of zip lining and walking in between several of the platforms. Return to Samasati in time for lunch. An alternative included excursion would be horseback riding at the beach. Well-trained horses and an expert guide will accompany you in this adventurous excursion. You, too, will be back in time for lunch. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 6 Thursday

After yoga and breakfast, you will have a morning adventure at the nearby Cahuita National Park. It is known for white sand, palm tree lined beaches, and crystal clear blue waters. You will also have the opportunity to hike the flat seven kilometers to the point or sunbath. Return to Samasati for lunch and relax or participate in other activities. Taxis can be arranged in the afternoon to go to town for shopping and exploring. Or you can hike one of the many trails, get a massage, relax in the Jacuzzi, take a nap or read in a hammock. You will have the opportunity to dine in a home of a local for family as an alternative to having dinner at Samasati.

Day 7 Friday

After yoga and a leisurely breakfast, you will transfer mid-morning to San Jose and check-in at the Hotel Don Carlos again. There are local markets and museums to explore, or sign-up for an optional white water rafting excursion on your return trip to San Jose. The Pacuare River is world famous for its beauty. A true river gorge, it is flanked by steep, green walls. You will see waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides. Wildlife is abundant. It is not an overly challenging river, but it has many rapids that will make your adventure very interesting and fun. The 18-mile-one-day-run includes 38 rapids. Few rivers in the world can offer you so many rapids in such a short stretch of water. 99 USD per person. A farewell dinner is scheduled at local restaurant, Caf Mundo, where you will be able to enjoy your last evening with your new found friends.

Day 8 Saturday

After breakfast, transportation will be arranged based on your return flight home. Samasati Nature Retreat hopes you return home rejuvenated and inspired by all you experienced.

There are three different excursions included in the price of the retreat. On Monday, the group will go to Puerto Viejo to visit the Jaguar Animal Rescue Center, and then to a nearby beach. On Wednesday after yoga and breakfast, the group will head out for the famous canopy tour; an alternative included excursion would be horseback riding at the beach. Finally, on Thursday, after yoga and breakfast, you will have a morning adventure at the nearby Cahuita National Park.

You will leave the river and hike through the primary forest to get to the next adventure, tree climbing. Using a harness you will climb 16 meters on a tree to get to a platform where you will start the canopy tour. You will enjoy fruits on one of the platforms. Wildlife is abundant; sloth, toucans, parrots, coatis, butterflies, and colorful frogs are common sights. Other inhabitants of this jungle like monkeys, jaguars, peccaries, and tapirs generally stay more hidden. It is not an overly challenging river, but it has many rapids that will make your adventure very interesting and fun. The 18-mile-one-day-run includes a total of 38 rapids. Few rivers in the world can offer you so many rapids in such a short stretch of water. Upon arrival at the river, you will get geared up with a life jacket, helmet ,and paddle and then briefed with a full safety orientation talk by expert guides. The first four miles consist of class two and three rapids, a great time to test your new river skills, gain confidence in your team, and have fun. During your stay in Samasati Nature Retreat, you can enjoy a massage or a spa treatment for an extra fee upon request.

Chocolate - coffee body treatment

This mood-lifting experience begins with a Caribbean chocolate coffee scrub and light massage to exfoliate the skin. After your thorough exfoliation, you take a warm shower in your private outdoor rainforest room. Next, you are lathered and massaged with a decadent body mask of warm, melted chocolate and then wrapped within a light covering as the chocolate and oil refine your skin tone to a subtle softness. Next, you receive a head massage and an eye treatment with cool cucumber. After a final shower, the finale is a light massage with a velvety smooth and deeply nourishing cacao body butter. The cost is 110 minutes for 130 USD.

Heaven and earth - craniosacral and reflexology

This deeply profound treatment is for bringing heaven energy to the crown chakra and grounding earth energy to the feet. Craniosacral therapy adjusts the subtle rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid as it circulates around the brain and the spinal cord. Using a very light and sensitive touch, the therapist monitors the flow to determine where restrictions are located and gently releases them. This soothing therapy encourages optimal fluid movement throughout the body. The result is a deep sense of calm. Reflexology works with the reflexes and nerve endings in the feet, which correspond to every gland or organ of the body producing relaxation, pain reduction, cellular rejuvenation, and improved blood circulation. The cost is 120 USD for 90 minutes.

Rainforest massage

Design your custom massage using multiple modalities designed by you and your therapist to connect and deeply harmonize your body, mind, and spirit. Your therapist will talk with you to determine your needs and wishes and customize your session to focus on grounding, balancing, and chakra alignment. A delightfully light and refreshing rainforest massage gel is used. The cost is 95 USD for 60 minutes and 120 USD for 90 minutes.

Rainforest renewal

The rainforest renewal starts with a body scrub and light massage with local pineapple, mango, and brown sugar. Next, you take an outdoor shower in the private rainforest garden. After your refreshing shower, youll have a massage with rainforest gel, which is made of over 120 herbs, plants, and minerals. This refreshingly scented gel is then left on the body providing a wonderful refreshing finish to make the skin soft and healthy. The cost is 120 USD for 90 minutes.

Sunburn therapy

Heal your sun exposure with a light mask of cucumber, aloe, and lavender. This healing treatment is combined with the craniosacral massage and feet with reflexology while your skin baths in a healing mask. The cost for 90 minutes is 110 USD.

Thai yoga massage

A unique healing system also called Nuad Boran. The Thai yoga therapist was trained in Thailand and is an expert in guiding you through a series of yoga postures, while palming and thumbing along the bodys energy lines and pressure points. Together these actions result in a comprehensive full body treatment that relieves muscular tension, improves circulation, boosts the immune system, and balances the body energetically. The cost for 60 minutes is 130 USD and 195 USD for 140 minutes.

"A wonderfully nurturing and healing environment in a rain forest on the Caribbean. Samasati provided an escape for our family vacation in the most wonderful ways. With nature walks to waterfalls, a 24/7 hot tub with a view of the ocean, 2-story rustic Casitas with privacy and screened hammocks, yoga daily and massages (if you want them), it is a terrific place for all ages."

"I knew when my mother-in-law dried off in her birthday suit on her balcony that we would have all gotten what we came for. Yoga classes with Stephanie were more like yoga therapy, better than any other class I have ever had. She is an exceptional teacher. The food is wonderful. It is all fresh and clean. You are minutes from the beach and amazing people of Costa Rica! We can't praise Samasati enough. You have to be willing to deal with bugs and all kinds of animals, it is part of the experience."

"It is a great change of pace from the large resort vacations. It was just a wonderful low key week to spend in the rainforest with yoga in the morning, hiking trails, jacuzzi, delicious food, and just overall relaxing. You are about 10 to 15 minutes from Puerto Viejo. We went to town a few times, hit up the beach, bars and restaurants, and rode bikes around, which is just a great vacation overall. Staff is very friendly and accommodating (especially with the rides to town and back)."

  • Review by a traveler from Brunswick, Maine

"Best trip I have ever had. Complete quiet from humans, lots of noise from birds and howler monkeys. Just lovely. Saw Capuchin monkeys, a sloth, tons of toucans, and other birds, all on the property. Easy to get to local beaches via taxis; also easy to visit national parks, taxis are happy to pick you up when the staff calls them to come get you. Great, great vegetarian food, and coffee available very early in the morning, perfect for bird-watching from the open air deck at the dining hall."

"Bungalows were lovely- electricity, lots of hot water, and beautiful views of the jungle. No Wi-Fi at the bungalows, but plenty at the central dining hall, and didn't miss it in the bungalow. Too busy lying in the hammock on the veranda, looking at and listening to birds. Free yoga classes available morning and evening, if you want. I don't really do yoga, but I enjoyed these. Food is served buffet style, all you want, in the beautiful open air dining room. Wine and beer are available for purchase. Just wonderful."

  • Review by a traveler from Minneapolis, Minnesota

"I have traveled to Samasati twice and both times my exceptions were met and exceeded. I want to preface this review by saying I am not into yoga, but Samasati is still my favorite resort I have ever been to. Just because it is a yoga retreat doesn't mean you need to do yoga. I certainly didn't."

"I am a nature nerd, but not enough so to sleep on the ground in a tent. Samasati gives you the full rainforest experience with the comfort of beds and bungalows. The bungalows are glorious. They are huge and mostly screened in so you get a beautiful view of the rainforest and you can even see the ocean in the distance from some bungalows. "

"For me, this Samasati is heaven on earth. You need to take a 4x4 truck up a HUGE hill to get to the resort and you are then completely immersed in nature. You can hear the wildlife all day long - howler monkeys yell in the morning and all night long you will hear the frogs talking to each other. There are bugs and critters everywhere - including in your room. "

"You don't ever have to leave the resort if you don't want to. They have several hiking paths and even a small waterfall for you to explore. If you know where to look, you can spot so much wildlife. On my last visit, I went on a short hike on the property and saw a handful of frog species, several lizards, dozens of birds and even two Capuchin monkeys. On my last day, someone advised me that the easiest time to spot a sloth is at night after it rains - and they were right! Saw my first wild sloth. "

"For others, this situation may not be ideal. I have talked to a lot of people during my stays and most loved it, but two main problems cropped up for people. First if you don't like bugs, you need to learn to like them quickly. Second, if you like to have a night life on vacation, this is not a great place to stay. Because the resort is on top of a hill, the resort has a driver to being guests up and down, but he leaves at 9pm. And no, you can't walk up that hill. It is that big. "

"My other favorite thing about this resort is that it is great for solo women travelers. I never felt unsafe and the staff organized transport for me so I didn't have to worry about driving the 5 hours from San Jose to Samasati with someone sketchy."

"My only suggestion for the hotel is to bring back the books and field guides they had when I was there two years ago. I was disappointed that there were no reading and reference materials available in the common space anymore."

"Absolutely loved Samasati. The laid-back, family-friendly vibe was a dream. Getting to know staff and other guests was half the fun. Could never get this feel from a corporate resort. Everything from the sheer beauty of the rainforest, to the simple elegance of the casitas, to the proximity to the Caribbean Sea, everything exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Samasati over and over, over, over, again."

"Samasati is a magical enchanted place with a most wonderful staff. The food is amazing beyond words. I can't wait to go back! I brought a group there on retreat and everyone loved it. Casita number 5 is the best."

"I spent an unforgettable yoga retreat week from Christmas to New Year in Samasati, and I loved every second of my stay there. It made such a huge impact on me that I managed to convince my daughter to do the same, and I am also planning to go there next spring with several friends."

"Where to start - amazing ambient, very safe, helpful staff, warm hospitality, bungalows in the middle of the jungle, listening to monkeys shriek and tropical rain hitting roofs, enjoying view of the ocean, experiencing fantastic food, practicing yoga in a wonderful studio, when I put it all together, probably stay of the lifetime. Oh yes, I forgot that is only a few miles from one of the nicest beaches in the world. I will attach a few pictures, just to give you an idea of this amazing place."

"I had the luxury of attending a wedding at Samasati and the experience was beyond what I could of imagined. Let's start with the food, Funky, the cook was amazing! Everything was organic and fresh. The staff was very warm and ready to serve. My cabin was so beautiful with my own hammock to sit a enjoy the sounds of the jungle."

"Stephanie took us hiking and showed us all of the wonders that nature has to offer. I mean really the bullet ants were no joke. We saw rare animals and it was wonderful. Usually I am terrified of bugs being a city girl, but after getting educated I learned to blend with and appreciate the nature around me. Everything about Samasati was far beyond what I would want in a jungle retreat. Looking forward to the anniversary to return."

"The place, the people, and the food are all beautiful! They have excellent service and spirit. I felt like a loved family member. I was there for the Pura Vida Playshop, which was so much fun with the perfect blend of activity and relaxation. The managers and staff at Samasati were all so welcoming and knowledgeable about the land, the animals, and community. It truly is a magical place. Whether you are going for a group retreat, romantic get away, or some solitude, I highly recommend."

"My husband and I spent six days at the Samasati retreat for our friends' wedding. We stayed in a luxurious house number 4 with high ceilings, huge patios on both floors, big common area with full kitchen, a large bathroom with double sinks, and gorgeous views of the jungle. "

"The weather was sunny and warm most of the time with an occasional rain at night. The food was cooked to perfection sprinkled with love and yummy spices. It was a true feast for our senses: the soothing sound of the jungle, panoramic views of costa rica, deliciously fresh air and a warm ocean with black sand and white sand beaches. An eclectic Puerto Viejo is a short ride away. We were lucky to see two sloths and a monkey at the retreat. Will be definitely coming back again soon."

"I had the priviledge of staying in Samasati on October 19th to 22nd. I was looking for a place to disconnect, re-energize, and do yoga. My experience was everything and more! I am pretty demanding when it comes to yoga classes, being a teacher myself, and conscious of my personal needs. Stephanie's classes were everything I wanted and more! She can deliver a journey of self-exploration and self-realization with each class she gives, even its not always pretty what a student finds in her personal exploration through yoga."

"Yoga in its best is transformative, and thank God there are teacher like Stephanie who dedicate their lives to transform peoples lives. She allows her genuine self to be present every time she teaches. Her classes are always challenging, whether they are more active Vinyasa yoga, or passive Yin yoga. When student is open, the magic of yoga happens."

"How does one spell paradise? Samasati! This was truly one of the most amazing places I have ever visited. From the amazing casitas, to the fabulous views of the Caribbean, to the fresh vegetarian meals, this place has something for everyone. Imagine yourself immersed in the jungle, connected to nature, and all it has to offer and yet at the same time, having the opportunity to visit nearby Puerto Viejo or walk the beautiful beaches. I had such an amazing experience, it is truly difficult to put into words."

"There is nothing like doing yoga in the middle of the jungle, feeling connected to the earth or having a wonderful massage and hearing all the wildlife surrounding you with their beautiful songs. Staff was very friendly and approachable and would do anything possible to help you enjoy your stay, including booking any tours you might be interested in. The property was safe and secure and it was beautiful to sit in the jacuzzi at night, surrounded by stars, and seeing all the fireflies lighting up the night sky."

"This was my first visit to Costa Rica and it will not be my last. Definitely will not be my last visit to Samasati either. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone who is looking for something more personalized than a commercial hotel. Truly a paradise!"

  • Review by a traveler from Markham, Canada

"I was delighted at the location of Samasati Retreat. It is at the top of a mountain, in the jungle full of lush vegetation, flowers, birds, howler monkeys, and best of all, no mosquitoes. The casitas (individual bungalows) comes equipped with hammocks on the veranda and I was close to the hot tub, which was very welcoming after a day of zip lining and hiking. This was the perfect location to spend a few days."

"The retreat is very calm and serene, which is exactly what I was looking for. Stephanie and Scott are welcoming hosts and made my stay memorable starting with yoga at 6:30 in the morning and ending with a delicious vegetarian dinner and excellent coffee at the end of the day. The other staff are very helpful, accommodating, friendly, and always provided service with a smile. They arranged my transportation and excursions and provided very good advise whenever I needed it. Wi-Fi is available at the main lounge area, not in the casitas. I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious vegetarian meals every day. I enjoyed fish at lunch when I was in town, Puerto Viego, which was a 20-minute drive. "

"I really like Puerto Viego. It is a small town, not full of tourists. The beach is accessible to everyone and there are lots of very good restaurants. The local residents are friendly and there is an ATM at the bank on the main street. I relaxed and swam at the beach area close to the police station off the main street. US Dollars are accepted in most stores and restaurants. There are several shops with beautiful souvenirs at reasonable prices. Much better than the pricing at the airport."

"A few things to keep in mind in terms of getting to Samasati. The shuttle from San Jose airport leaves Denny's near the airport at 2:15 p.m, so make sure your flight arrive earlier during the day. The drive from the airport via the shuttle is approximately 5 hours on a beautiful road through the national park and cost 50 USD. It may take longer, depending on traffic. If your flight arrive late, then Samasati will arrange for you to stay at a hotel and then you can take the early morning shuttle. They will make all the arrangements for you."

"The other alternative is private transportation via Lancaster, which costs me 190 USD to return to the airport. I enjoyed the drive with Janny, the driver. We stopped for a delicious breakfast, stopped for photos, and anything else I wanted. Lancaster provide Wi-Fi in the car, but I was too busy enjoying the conversations with Janny and the beautiful drive to use the Wi-Fi. I will definitely return to Samasati. It is the perfect location to enjoy nature, yoga, and local town."

"This place was incredible and very special people work there and make the stay a joy. I guess others have already described it well, but it was transformational and a very moving experience from the views, to how elegantly rustic it was to the incredible meals, to the individual attention and most of all to Stephanie who personalized the whole experience with her caring and connection. Don't hesitate to go."

  • Review by Franny from Miami, Florida

"On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it. When describing Samasati and its grounds, this quote rings especially true. It is a place to lose yourself and to find yourself. To slow down and relax, reflect, and relish in the lush, heavenly surroundings. It is enchanting this rainforest overlooking The Caribbean and Puerto Viejo. Birds abound: toucans, hummingbirds, raptors, and more. Sightings of monkeys and gentle sloths are common too. As you walk the grounds, fluttering by you will see brilliant Blue Morphos the most beautiful of butterflies, as well as frogs and reptiles of various hues."

"The accommodations are casitas perched atop a mountain, with hammocks beckoning for use, are rustic and charming. They are like tree houses, but with all the essentials. The views are stellar! Not surprisingly, Samasati attracts a soulful crowd. Here like-minded travelers connect easily. Our guru, Stephanie was incredible. Her high energy, generous spirit, and affable nature made for easy and very enjoyable company. Add to all of this, daily yoga and meditation, as well as delicious vegetarian fare. You will leave a different person from when you came in. If you have never traveled alone, or if you love yoga and meditation, or if you are going through a hardship, or if you simply need to check out for a bit, this is the place for you!"

"We booked a stay for five days. We enjoyed the rooms and the fact that you are in the jungle with only a few minutes ride to the beach. We rented a 4x4 to get around. The rooms were simple and great to get away from a busy schedule. The breakfast that is offered is great and the view is even better. We didn't explore much of the property because we would go out during the day to explore. Overall, a great place highly recommend it."

"Samasati Retreat was a wonderful experience and honeymoon. The staff was helpful and friendly. They all did their jobs amazingly. The location is breathtaking and personal. Samasati is perched on the side of a mountain that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. The wildlife is present and active, moreover the locals are friendly and helpful. All of the extra activities Samasati offer are worth the money and experience. I would love to live at Samasati. The Cabanas were very well taken care of and no issues with bugs or other intruders."

"Experience of a lifetime, but not for everyone. My husband and I came upon Samasati during our 4 weeks trip in Costa Rica, when looking for a new adventure. The adventure started on the steep ride up to the Retreat, which we hiked up and down a few times during our 8 days stay."

"Remembering all the time that you are in the rainforest is important. The cabins are charming with big windows (only screens) offering amazing views through the huge trees and the sounds of rain, birds, monkeys, and all kinds of creepy crawlers.Waking up at the break of dawn was an every day highlight, like listening in surround to each instrument of an orchestra practicing prior to the beginning of the concert. Sensational."

"The delicious vegetarian meals are different every day and beautifully displayed. We enjoyed full board so never worried about where and what to eat, which I highly recommend. Like many other guests, I suggested they publish a cookbook. I am anxiously waiting to purchase a few. The shared areas of Samasati were very well maintained and the dining area was especially clean. The rooms and the screens should be better maintained."

"I practice yoga at home regularly, but found the classes to be aimed more for the yoga teacher trainees. The front desk staff was especially friendly, helpful and professional. We had our own 4x4 car so were able to take several trips and hikes around the area. We have many incredible memories to enjoy from this and our entire trip to Costa Rica."

"Great experience. The staff is very friendly. They all speak English. They arranged everything for my trip to arrive and depart. Buffet was tasty and good veggie food. The rainforest is spectacular. Sleeping right in it to the sound of rain at night, very peaceful. The rain stopped during the day and I saw sloths, monkeys, parrots, toucans, potoos, hummingbirds galore, an electric blue butterfly, and many other amazing critters. They have a free shuttle into town and a Jacuzzi. This place is for nature lovers. I will visit again next year perhaps."
