Detox and Yoga Retreat Thailand

A detox is more than just the treatments you get and the number of green juices you drink. It is a holistic event that needs the right environment and people to support you while detoxing. To detox is natural and should be done once or twice a year to maintain health and metabolic performance of your body. Though note, not all detox approaches are created equal. Samahita Retreat is surrounded by towering coconut trees in a quiet, spacious area, with incredible sunrises and sunsets that play with the colors of the water, sand and tropical fauna. The beach is non-touristy and virtually undisturbed, creating a beautiful, peaceful setting for you to enjoy your Thailand stay.

This side of the island is protected by a natural reef. The tide varies across the year where mid-year months are low swimming times, except for the boat channels. The main shopping areas are still within easy reach, about 20 to 30 minutes away by car or motorbike.

However, the beauty here is Samahita Retreat’s gentle setting, inspiring long, refreshing walks on the beach or through the meandering green back roads. You may see a water buffalo grazing or families of chickens running free. Enjoy other activities at Samahita. Samahita was purpose-built to function as a retreat center dedicated to your vitality, well-being, and relaxation.

The variety of private and shared room options reflect that. The rooms are set back from the main beachfront facilities perfect for quiet contemplation and relaxation. Program

Samahita’s Detox Program has been developed from years of experience in the specifics of detox as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle and continued supportive practices. Samahita Retreat is not an off-the-shelf product.

They are a tried-and-experienced program over years that carefully balances the combination of activity, relaxation, therapy, and a detoxing diet with supplements including candida detox. The retreat, both in concept and natural setting, is designed to revitalize our guests and guide them into an empowered life.

The program uses a custom-formulated Ayurvedic herbal detox mix, plenty of teas, broths and juices, veggies, and fruit where appropriate, detox supplements, and a mix of rejuvenating and detoxing therapies and practices. The liver is the workhorse of detoxification.

It is also optional to include a liver flush towards the end of your program, intended to help with gallstones, cholesterol levels, liver-related headaches, and even food allergies, weight reduction, and constipation. People’s backgrounds, diet, and lifestyle differ as does one’s experience on a detox.

If one of your goals is to eliminate Candida, this program can help with that. Candida is a naturally occurring yeast in the gut that, if produced in excess, can unbalance your whole system, creating an acidic environment where bad bacteria can thrive, and in-turn disease.

Foods that feed candida and encourage it to flourish include sugar, white flour, yeast, and alcohol. Avoiding sugar in all its forms is key to controlling Candida. A detox including green juices, steamed vegetables, broths, and supporting supplements, can be a good start to discourage the overgrowth of yeast and then continuing with a diet of foods that nourish the body, not the candida.

Your initial consultation and daily guest check-in provide an opportunity to adjust your program, taking your needs, goals, and preferences into account, and balancing them with their professional expertise to provide you with the most supportive detox experience. Samahita Retreat also offers you post-detox guidelines to help you transition from your detox back to regular eating.

Why detox?

Increased environmental toxins stress our bodies, from pollution to pesticides, processed foods, products you use on your skin, many of which are stored long-term in your body’s cells. Within the body, its own metabolic processes produce chemicals that must be removed efficiently and cleanly.

This process gets compromised by a sedentary life, diet choices, and is burdened by these environmental toxins. Importantly though, poor breathing leaves the body more toxic. A detox is a gentle, healthy way to rid ourselves of these toxins, promoting optimal liver functioning and overall good health. Samahita Retreat also trains your breath to affect detoxification both on a detox and after you leave.

Here are just a few reasons to detox:

  • Lower the risk for chronic disease
  • Slow the aging process
  • Boost the immune system
  • Balance the body and mind
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Improve digestion
  • Lose weight

What can I expect from a detox?

The goal of a detox is to improve cellular metabolism by clearing cellular waste through several methods that involve a clear out of the digestive system by limiting food consumption, using a variety of herbs, treatments, practices, and activities to help the body detoxify at the cellular level.

Each person’s experience can vary depending on the degree of toxicity. Preparing a little before starting a detox can help with detox symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, or abdominal discomfort. Reducing to possibly eliminating, sugar, alcohol, and processed foods will strongly help with the preparation.

Your diet will consist of alkaline and easily digestible foods and juices. Your plan can be personalized, depending on your current diet and condition. You can dive straight into juices and soups only to simplify digestive function, or include detox supporting vegetables that can make the process less intense.

Samahita Retreat recommends and offers daily, cleansing practices that they teach from yoga, breathwork/meditation techniques, and yoga-asana practices classes to support and aid optimal detoxification.

What symptoms may I expect while on the detox program?

Headaches are common if withdrawing from caffeine. Depending on your diet and lifestyle to date symptoms will differ in presence and intensity. Constipation, diarrhea, body odor, bad breath, skin breakouts, light-headedness, fatigue, muscular aches, and mucous discharges can occur.

They are not a cause for concern. Samahita Retreat offers simple remedies where appropriate, but, more importantly, the environment to let this process happen and clear it.

What should I do before my detox?

To prepare for your detox, consider eliminating certain foods (especially processed foods) from your diet two weeks before. Gradually reduce sugar, caffeine, and alcohol to limit your detox symptoms. Eat more vegetables, especially greens, and fresh vegetable juices to start the process of balancing the PH levels in the body.

Reduce the amount of red meat and other animal proteins leading up to the week of your detox is a good idea. Introduce anti-inflammatory foods in these two weeks will also serve your body in preparation, such as green leafy vegetables, broccoli, bone broth, chia seeds, beetroot, turmeric, ginger, walnuts, wild caught salmon, and coconut oil.

Certain supplements can boost your liver function and assist with a thorough detox. Consider amino acids, liver-supporting herbs, B vitamins, and antioxidants. Check with your doctor before you take any supplements, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.

How can a detox improve fitness?

A detox is carefully designed to improve both the mind and body. It rids your system of accumulated toxins that can make you feel sluggish, tired, and generally unwell. When combined with a sensible exercise routine, a detox boosts vitality, increases vigor, improves alertness, and can even help to combat the symptoms of chronic illness.

Will I feel hungry while on a detox program?

The programs are designed so that you receive regular refreshments throughout the day, keeping fluid levels high and helping to keep hunger at bay. It is normal however to experience feelings of hunger, especially for the first two days of a detox program when your system will be adjusting to some drop-in calories.

One of the detox drinks that you receive daily contains plenty of bulk fiber which helps to satisfy hunger cravings. Drinking enough water during the day and in between the refreshments will also help to avoid hunger.

Will my energy levels be affected while on a detox program?

It is normal for energy levels to fluctuate during a detox program, often dropping to lower than normal for the first few days, this is due to the restricted intake, a toxin-free diet and the initial symptoms of detoxification. If you are accustomed to consuming large amounts of caffeine, you may experience withdrawal symptoms like headaches, mental lethargy, and sluggishness.

Do I need to do the liver and gallbladder flush?

No, it is optional. As part of your program, Samahita Retreat offers a liver and gallbladder flush toward the end of your detox. The liver flush potentially helps prevent gallstones, lowers cholesterol levels in the blood, reduces liver-related headaches, and migraines (ie. those with nausea), helps food allergies, eases constipation, and improves vitality levels.

Can I come on a detox program to lose weight?

Weight loss is a natural part of a detox program. Old waste that has been stored inside the colon is released over the course of the program along with many toxins; you can store a number of kilos of old fecal matter in your systems so when it is released, you can feel a lot lighter as a result.

The restricted diet means a reduction in calories from your usual daily intake, so over a period of a few days, some weight loss is normal as the body adjusts itself to closer to its natural weight. If weight loss is your main goal, perhaps consider Samahita Retreat’s weight loss program instead.

Can I continue my yoga practice while on a detox program?

Yes. However, it is likely you may need to modify the intensity of your practice to suit your energy levels. The experienced teachers can help you to adapt your practice on a daily basis. It is recommended for you to practice pranayama (yogic breathwork) daily, throughout the detox program. The yoga teachers lead breath and pranayama practices every morning and include in the afternoon restorative class also.

Will I feel better after completing a detox program?

You can gain many benefits from completing a detox program including an enhanced sense of well-being, increased energy and stamina, improved digestion and circulation, weight loss, improved skin condition, better moods, a boost to the immune system and improved quality of sleep.

For best results, a minimum of five days is recommended. Much of how you will feel depends on how much time you stay on the detox, your diet, and lifestyle prior to the detox, how you prepare before starting the program and how you come off of it and return to regular eating.

How do I transition out of my detox?

It is important to transition off your detox gradually. Introducing foods one food group at a time will ensure you don’t overload your system. Depending on what detox you do, depends on what to include on your first days. Definitely no airplane food.

So, if possible, have a couple of days after your detox to ease back into foods from the healthy buffet, to be most supportive for your system. Always choose non-processed foods, that are packed with nutrients and electrolytes, to help your body with the transition.

Can I leave the retreat center during my detox program?

In between your mealtimes, drinks, supplements, and therapies you are free to do as you wish, however, it is important to bear in mind that your body may need rest while on a detox program so Samahita Retreat advises that your free time is a quiet time for contemplation and relaxation. Samahita Retreat is situated in a tranquil and beautiful part of the island which is perfect for your restoration and rejuvenation.

Recommended Airports

Driving directions

  • From the Koh Samui ring road 4169, take road 4173 at the Namuang waterfall intersection.
  • Follow the road for three kilometers until the four-way intersection at Ban Thale and then turn right on to road 4170 towards Laem Sor Pagoda or Thong Krut.
  • Continue for approximately 1 kilometer, and then turn left where you see signs for Mor Din restaurant, Easytime resort, and Samahita Retreat (fawn colored back-light sign).

Arrival by airplane

Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways fly directly to Koh Samui from Bangkok. They operate flights every hour daily and you can book your flights directly online. The first flight out is around 6 a.m. and last flight is around 10 p.m. daily. Travel time is approximately one hour from Bangkok. There are direct also flights from Phuket, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Hong Kong.

Arrival by train and ferry

Bangkok to Samui

Trains for Surathani (which actually stop in Phun Phin, 14 kilometers west of Surathani) leave from Bangkok's Hualamphong station. The 6.20 p.m. (rapid) and the 7.15 p.m. (express) trains are most convenient, as they arrive at 5.28 a.m. and 7 a.m., allowing you plenty of time to catch an 8 a.m. boat to Koh Samui.

The bus/ferry journey will be an additional three hours once you've arrived in Surathani. Songserm offers a joint ticket (train + bus + boat) for around 1,300 THB, which lands you in Koh Samui by 11 a.m.

The ferry journey from Donsak pier is 1.5 hours. Donsak is 30 minutes from Surathani.

Tickets for the train can be booked at Bangkok Airport, Bangkok Railway Station, and many travel agencies in Bangkok.

To purchase your train tickets in advance, Asia Discover Thailand can arrange for the tickets to be mailed or to be picked up at your Bangkok hotel. Allow at least one month before your departure date to arrange for train tickets.

Samui to Bangkok

Take the 2 p.m. boat from Nathon to the mainland, and a connecting bus will take you from the pier to the train station in Surathani.

Tickets purchased from agents in Samui normally include the boat, bus, and train fares. The ticket is cheaper if you go to the station yourself, but there is a good chance the train will be fully booked as much as a week in advance.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 100% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
