The Mayans are considered the most culturally advanced among the Mesoamerican civilizations. They also were the first true chocolate aficionados, treasuring cacao as a restorative, mood-enhancing cure-all. It became an integral part of their society, used in ceremonies, given as gifts, and incorporated into their mythologies.

Food for the gods

The word “cacao” possibly originated with the pre-Mayan Olmec peoples. The words “ka-ka-wa” were deciphered from an ancient Mayan drinking vessel. This is not to be confused with modern processed “chocolate”, which has been heated, sweetened, and otherwise modified, removing many of cacao’s natural beneficial effects.

The importance of the cacao tree and its fruit to the people of Central and South America is found in their myths and legends. The Mayans inherited their knowledge of cacao from the Olmecs and became the first to use cacao as ‘currency’.

The place where the rainbow gets its color

The delicious sacred cocoa elixir is consumed in sacred space and with solemn ceremony, followed by meditation, chanting, breath work, dancing, and with live music. All specially designed to facilitate deep shamanic journeying, bringing insights, answers to questions, connection to your true divine nature, and bliss.

The cacao world tree

Chocolate plays a part in Mayan traditions. The Mayans’ sacred book, Popul Vuh, contains their story of the creation, and instead of an apple tree, there’s a cacao tree. In this myth, immortal ball-playing twins are beheaded by the gods of death. One has his head hung on a cacao tree. The magical head manages to mate with a woman who becomes the mother of twin gods. These two defeat the gods of death and then end up in the sky as the sun and the moon.

The land is alive

In the rugged Sierra Madre mountains of north-western Mexico, the Huichol or Wixáritari people, who it is believed are descendants of the Aztecs, are still living as they have done for thousands of generations, in communion with nature and with each other. Never conquered by outsiders, their sacred traditions and connection to the gods have remained intact. They are one of only a handful of existing indigenous cultures with such a continuous heritage.

It is estimated that there are approximately 15,000 members of this last-known tribe of indigenous Indians in the Americas.

The spirit of the blue deer

The Huicholes' lives center around ancient rituals and tradition, everything from planting corn to embroidering clothes, all done in a sacred way. Their artwork is alive with their experience of the divine. The Wixárika (meaning “the healing people” in their native Huichol language) are known for their colorful clothing and famous for their vivid and elaborately designed ‘yarn paintings’ and beadwork.

Together, their cosmology and shamanic tradition form and define a unique and highly structured way of life, which is expressed in every facet of their lives.

Visions of the ancestors

Their distinctive visionary art, in the form of these yarn paintings, embroidered clothing, bags, beaded gourds, masks, jewelry, and sculpture, all derives from their shamanic visions whose symbols form the basis of their work and their lives. The work is all hand-made by individual artists who are taught by their elders, and who then pass on the artistic techniques to their children. And so it goes, from generation to generation.

Originally all the artwork was made as “offrendas”, prayer offerings to the spirits left at places of power along the pilgrimage route.

An ancient 400-mile pilgrimage

The “mara’akame”, the shaman, still leads pilgrims on a yearly journey retracing the path of the gods and goddesses when they first appeared in this middle world and traveled on a sacred pilgrimage to find its center.

The pilgrimage culminates in a night-long ceremony around ‘tatewari’, grandfather fire, a meditative retreat during which shamanic plant medicine ceremony using a button shaped cactus called peyote or ‘hikuri’, induces a visionary state by which the Wixárika people find their lives and the power, the ‘kupuri’, to follow their heart path to completion.

" I will try to find the proper words to express my feelings related to my experience with the Sacred Mythic Journey although it is difficult to express such a deep, intense and transformative experience. Today I am filled with immense gratitude to you/the universe/my spirit guides who I learned are all the same for this transformative experience. I feel a heart filled with gratitude and love. You have helped me open my heart to see and feel what love is all about. You have taught me how and where to look for and find love. You have shown me or helped me see who I really am and what my purpose is here at this time. What a tough but loving teacher you were!!! I will be grateful and indebted to you for ever. You were right when you said your work was worth thousands and maybe millions of dollars, I think your work is invaluable , it is priceless, YOUR worth does not have a price. You are sooo young and yet sooo old!!! I am so proud to have had the opportunity to work under your direction and be a recipient of your wisdom which is immense maybe as infinite as the sky you ordered for me that night.THANK YOU!!! I have never seen such a magical sight!! I feel different. I feel re-newed. I fell rebirthed. I feel like eating milky ways every day at 68 years of age thanks to your help.! :o) I will be grateful for a long , long, time. I hope to see you again soon. I want to work some more even though you are a tough teacher who make me work so hard.:o)Receive all my love and respect from a heart that has been opened and is filled with immense gratitude.Namaste! • Review by Rafaela Damiani from Brazil

" The experience I had with the sacred mythic journey cannot be compared to anything that happened in my whole life. I went so deep inside my soul and felt so much love that is hard to describe it in words, my mind cant really understand it. The way the team felt what I needed and conduced me really made the difference; I wouldnt get to the right point if they werent there. They all helped me see things that I was hiding my whole life and I can say that Im changing the course of it after everything I accessed there. I want to thank everybody who was apart of it, the Universe and all the energies that helped us there. Love Rafa. "
