In the rugged Sierra Madre mountains of north-western Mexico, the Huichol or Wixáritari people, who it is believed are descendants of the Aztecs, are still living as they have done for thousands of generations, in communion with nature and with each other. Never conquered by outsiders, their sacred traditions and connection to the gods have remained intact. They are one of only a handful of existing indigenous cultures with such a continuous heritage.
It is estimated that there are approximately 15,000 members of this last-known tribe of indigenous Indians in the Americas.
The Huicholes' lives center around ancient rituals and tradition, everything from planting corn to embroidering clothes, all done in a sacred way. Their artwork is alive with their experience of the divine. The Wixárika (meaning “the healing people” in their native Huichol language) are known for their colorful clothing and famous for their vivid and elaborately designed ‘yarn paintings’ and beadwork.
Together, their cosmology and shamanic tradition form and define a unique and highly structured way of life, which is expressed in every facet of their lives.
Their distinctive visionary art, in the form of these yarn paintings, embroidered clothing, bags, beaded gourds, masks, jewelry, and sculpture, all derives from their shamanic visions whose symbols form the basis of their work and their lives. The work is all hand-made by individual artists who are taught by their elders, and who then pass on the artistic techniques to their children. And so it goes, from generation to generation.
Originally all the artwork was made as “offrendas”, prayer offerings to the spirits left at places of power along the pilgrimage route.
The “mara’akame”, the shaman, still leads pilgrims on a yearly journey retracing the path of the gods and goddesses when they first appeared in this middle world and traveled on a sacred pilgrimage to find its center.
The pilgrimage culminates in a night-long ceremony around ‘tatewari’, grandfather fire, a meditative retreat during which shamanic plant medicine ceremony using a button shaped cactus called peyote or ‘hikuri’, induces a visionary state by which the Wixárika people find their lives and the power, the ‘kupuri’, to follow their heart path to completion.

In this retreat, you will have the amazing opportunity to experience a sacred 400-mile pilgrimage journey from the waters of the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Wixárika symbolized birthplace of the sun in the north-east of the country.
This is the same sacred route that has been traveled by the Wixárika people, by both the parents and the children themselves, every year for the last few hundred decades during their long quest to the desert in the east, to gather their sacred ‘peyote’ teacher plant medicine (flowers in the desert) and bring it home back to their villages in the west.
Marc is the co-founder of Sacred Mythic Journeys and cosmic journey guide. After working and traveling in some very remote parts of the planet such as Tibet, Nepal, China, Tanzania, Thailand, Fiji, El Salvador, Venezuela, Honduras, and Brazil as a scuba diving instructor, coral reef conservation project expedition leader, and keen surfer, skydiver and snowboarder, Marc realized truly with much more clarity where his life had been leading him all this time and what it had been preparing him for.
