Accommodation is provided in beautifully furnished 5-metre bell tents. Nestled amongst the lemon and orange groves, the bell tents are simple but sumptuous, with electricity and comfortable beds. Each tent can sleep up to three people. Crisp bed linen and pool towels are provided. There are solar hot and cold powered showers facilities. Internet access is available. There is a small shop on site for all those little essentials you might need.

Styles of yoga

​Tania and James offer different but complementary styles. Tania teaches what she calls mindful Vinyasa yoga. This style combines intelligent but flowing movements with an emphasis on good alignment and moving with the breath. With over 20 years experience Tania draws from a range of yoga traditions including modern Vinyasa, ha-tha, Restorative and Satyananda. Tania has also spent time living in ashrams and immersing herself in wider yoga traditions which go beyond the asana.

​James has used yoga and meditation to overcome depression and bring a 180 degree change in his life. He has immersed himself in yogic traditions and studied ha-tha yoga in Rishikesh, India (the home of yoga). He is passionate about bringing yoga to people with of all ages and levels of flexibility. James teaches a mixture of dynamic yoga and longer held positions to increase strength and stamina. As well as guiding your asana postures to increase both your muscular strength and flexibility James will also lead discussions looking at the philosophy of yoga and its origins.

Your Rustic Retreats Journey

At this very special New Years retreat we will be exploring various ways to relax, renew and reform! How many times have you heard (or maybe you’ve said it yourself) ‘I’m too tired, stressed to ... (to start sports, or take on new healthy habits etc)’ .... Or ‘I’ll start .... (yoga,relaxing more) when ...(this project, job)... is finished’. At this retreat we’ll be blessed with 7 wonderful days away from our everyday stresses and responsibilities. Often stress can be a huge barrier to making positive changes in our lives: this retreat will tackle this by providing multiple opportunities to explore active relaxation. The daily asana classes will begin slowly and Tania and James will break down common poses to ensure everyone is starting from the same level and working safely. Over the week as your strength, flexibility and stamina increase the classes will become more challenging.

This retreat will help you relax and restore your body by providing multiple techniques such a guided meditation, breathing exercises and visualizations to help the body and mind activate the parasympathetic nervous system. These techniques help to reduce stress and anxiety and help the body move into the ‘rest and restorative mode’ thereby improve digestion, lowering blood pressure and improving reproductive function. Walking in nature, clean fresh air, sunshine and healthy nutritious food will help you renew your mind and body. We will also provide opportunities to reform your bodies through both slow and dynamic asana classes. Through these you will activate under-used muscle groups and learn to move deeper into the yoga postures. The active yoga classes will also help you create more strength, freedom and space in your body.

What’s your dharma?

Goal setting and envisaging the life you want It is said that 'yoga is excellence in action' and when we get more into our yoga practice we realize that it goes far beyond what we do on the yoga mat. Yoga is a process of getting to know ourselves better and through this often we learn our true path, and what will make us feel more fulfilled. In this workshop we will use the ancient story of Krishna and Arjuna to illustrate the yogic idea of ‘dharma’. We will explore what holds you back and stops you being the more authentic you. Meditation, creative techniques and yoga nidra (a yogic sleep) will help us explore and manifest our goals and understand what is holding us back. This workshop will be complemented by a New Years Eve fire ceremony.

Find your warrior! Dealing with stress, fear and anxiety.

​Stress, fear and anxiety are sadly often a major part of our modern lives. They often stop us doing the things we want as we are worried about failure or making the wrong decisions. At this workshop we will explore common fears and learn some techniques to face them. We will learn

calming breathing and meditation techniques from a range of traditions, and also use confidence building techniques to deal with stressful situations.

Free your body: Dance you desires in and your fears away

At this fun workshop we will free up our bodies and minds using techniques from 5-rhythms and ecstatic dance traditions. We will explore free movement in all areas of the body and learn how to express ourselves more fully through the medium of dance. We will tell the story of our previous year with all our triumphs and hurts, and we will say with our bodies what we have been unable to say with our words. We will then dance our dreams and hopes for the coming year. These powerful practices often help us release deeply entrenched tension: if you are new to using dance practices or are shy about dancing in front of others please don’t worry as together we will form a safe and inclusive space.

Connect with Nature: Mindful nature walk and story telling workshop.

At Rustic Retreats we will be living in a beautiful valley and be surrounded by gorgeous nature including eagles, wildflowers and stunning skies. This active workshop will help us be more mindful, appreciate our surroundings and use this as an opportunity to reflect on our ‘stories’. The workshop will first involve undertaking a silent walk (either combined with a group walk to Aledo or done around Rustic Retreats) and collecting objects on the way that make us reflect on the environment around us and our reaction to it. After the walk we will meet together to share our stories and reflections on the practice and what it represents to us.

Go deeper: Philosophy discussion.

This workshop will focus on introducing you to the basic philosophy, concepts and history of yoga. It will cover the various traditional philosophies and viewpoints, insights from modern research and ways in which the essence of this holistic life-view can be integrated into a modern lifestyle. Participants may find some of the yogic principles resonate well with the new beginnings and restoration achieved throughout the retreat. Although there are many religious stories linked to yoga this discussion will be undertaken from a completely secular point


Tania Plahay
Tania is a passionate, experienced and committed Hatha and Vinyasa yoga teacher. She is also a qualified prenatal yoga teacher and meditation teacher. She employs a holistic and responsive teaching style, to facilitate a sense of quiet self-awareness in her students, and learning about the body, the asanas and breathing techniques. Her classes are well suited for beginners in yoga or advanced students, from mum-to-be to the elderly.
James Heather
James undertook his Hatha yogic studies in Rishikesh, India (the home of yoga). He combines traditional Hatha techniques with stronger flowing movements. Having played regular tennis and golf, he understands the restrictions and tightness having a sporty as well as a sedentary lifestyle can bring. He helps people from all backgrounds and ages to improve their flexibility, feel stronger and more peaceful. James has also suffered from shoulder and knee issues and has used his practice therapeutically to help work through these challenges. ​

Retreat location

Rustic Retreats run beautifully yoga retreats in the Sierra Espuna mountain range in Southern Spain. A stunning estate, totally off-grid, with zero light pollution, solar power, and fresh spring water. The unique yoga platform sits nestled into the side of the mountain, with breath taking views across the tranquil valley.

Stimulate all your senses whilst you absorb the bright colors, beautiful textures, tantalizing flavors, and sublime aromas of the fresh food served at Rustic Retreats. The chef will create a myriad of fresh, healthy vegetarian meals to tantalize your pallet, all using the ripest, freshest, seasonal ingredients that are locally produced either from their very own organic garden and vegetable patch or from the local market and farmers.

Varieties of fruit are growing freely on the site such as lemons, oranges, almonds, pomegranate, and carob to name but a few. All vegetarian meals are lovingly prepared by a trained chef in the outdoor kitchen and are served 'al fresco' whenever possible. All meals are included in the price. The meals have been so popular with the clients that they are looking at producing a recipe book for next season.

Start the day with a fruit smoothie or refreshing mint tea.

Breakfast baby spinach omelet, cereals, fruit and French toast.

Lunch bell pepper frittata, bean and yogurt salad, and pumpkin bread.

Evening meal squash and zucchini casserole with wild rice and lemon tart.

Arrival by airplane

Fly into to Alicante, then it's a 2-hour train journey (6 EUR) through the beautiful Spanish countryside down to Totana station where Rustic Retreats will collect you.
