During this retreat, you will experience Hatha and Flow yoga classes in the mornings that will be the yang part of your daily practice. Hatha yoga is one of the first forms of yoga and means balance, “Ha” means “sun” and “tha” means “moon”. It is designed to prepare your body for meditation. To warm the body, you will practice sun salutations and then progress the sequence from there. Other sequences that will be included are the Shakti dance and the dragon dance.
Flow means that you will move with the breath so the practice will be dynamic yet thoughtful, allowing you time to feel the postures. This helps to remember where to feel the opening or stretch when you practice on your own. The flow of the sequence encourages you to be mindful with the breath. Yin yoga will be practiced during the evening.
This practice is designed to help you sit longer and more comfortably in meditation by stretching connective tissue around the joints (mainly the knees, pelvis, sacrum, and spine). As a passive practice, Yin yoga involves variations of seated and supine poses typically held for three to five minutes accessing deeper layers of fascia.
Every class in this retreat, you will build on the previous sequence so you can will feel competent to complete the asana on your own. This retreat will be a journey through yoga and meditation which will enable you to take a self-practice home with you. On this retreat, you will learn all the basics of the yoga practice as well as some of the more complex asana, philosophy, and relax with guided meditations.
There will be one workshop per day. It may be in the morning or afternoon. There is also the option to visit local markets on Wednesday and Sunday. The schedule may vary depending on the retreat.
Patanjali detailed in the yoga sutras the eight limbs of yoga; moral codes for you to live by. Within those texts, he wrote the contained yamas and niyamas. In the first workshop, you will learn all about these teachings and you will also discuss how you can bring them to your everyday lives.
It will help you to live a more conscious life and to be more mindful by bringing yoga practice to the real world. This may also help you on you journey through the retreat by helping you to find the path to a self-practice where you won’t need guidance.
If you’re accustomed to sweating your way toward glamorous poses, yin yoga may at first glance seem too slow, too simple, and a bit too boring. But this complex practice of long, passively held floor poses is deeply nourishing and has myriad benefits for any yoga practitioner. You will look at postures in detail and discuss the impact that has on your fascia.
Fascia, which means “band” or “bundle” in Latin, surrounds, connects, and supports your muscles, organs, bones, tendons, ligaments, and other structures of the body. Similar to the membrane around each section of an orange, the fascia both separates and connects body parts at the same time. By holding asana, you release deep layers of connective tissue, creating more ease in any style of yoga and in seated meditation.
On an energetic level, yin enhances the flow of prana (life force) in the tissues around the joints where energy often stagnates. During this workshop you will look at the areas of the body that will benefit depending on the specific asana.
Yoga Nidra, loosely translated as “yogic sleep,” is a form of deep meditation designed to bring you into a state of pure awareness and self-discovery. It’s a powerful psychological tool that has helped people for hundreds of years. During the workshop, you will practice this powerful meditation and discuss its benefits and how it works.
Yoga Nidra has roots in ancient texts like the Upanishads, an ancient text. It was revived in the mid-20th century by Swami Satyananda Saraswati who developed a systematic relaxation practice from tantric teachings.
Yogis used it to purify the samskaras, or deep impressions that create the karma. Modern research shows that it can help everything from headaches to post traumatic stress disorder. Even though that the intention of the practice is to stay awake, yoga Nidra means conscious sleep and many students find it a cure for insomnia.
Yoga is a beneficial practice to compliment many sports. It also helps those who sit in an office all day. The instructor, after having a job where she sat a desk all day and also a job where she over worked her upper body, realized that she could counteract the repetitive motions with yoga and somatic movement.
Also, being a keen cyclist and wannabe runner, she developed sequences that are beneficial in helping the hips, hamstrings, and all the other bits that suffer. During this workshop, you will discuss the movements, or lack of, when you are doing these activities and how you can improve with simple sequences that you can even practice in the office.
