The yoga classes will be a mixture of Yin and Yang styles of yoga, taking inspiration from various traditions including Ashtanga, Mandala and Rocket yoga. Our practice is designed to generate an abundance of energy within us allowing for creativity, expansion and growth. We will let go of expectations around how asanas 'should' look and focus on how we feel on a physical, mental and emotional level during our practice sessions.
Our morning classes will be based mainly in dynamic styles of yoga, always trying to cultivate a moving meditation with a focus on linking breath and movement to flow freely.
Ashtanga yoga is a style of yoga consisting of several set sequences of asanas moved through in conjunction with the breath and a focussed gaze (drishti). The synchronization of breath and dynamic movement produces an internal heat designed to purify the body from the inside out. Many dynamic forms of yoga that are practiced now are based upon or inspired by the Ashtanga vinyasa method.
Rocket yoga is one such style, rooted in Ashtanga vinyasa yoga. Rocket yoga is a dynamic and fast paced flow where students are encouraged to make their own interpretations and variations of traditional poses making this style of yoga accessible and fun for all.
Mandala vinyasa classes focus on a particular chakra/element/group of muscles. Mandala Vinyasa is performed in a spiraling way, moving around the mat. We use these spiraling movements to create a deeper connection between each element and its corresponding chakra (eg. Earth and Muladhara).
Our evening classes will be Yin yoga, which in contrast to our dynamic morning flows is a much more static, slow paced style of yoga. Poses in yin yoga are generally floor based, mostly targeting the lower half of the body and held for anywhere between 2-10 minutes. Yin yoga aims to cultivate your awareness of inner silence and is performed with the minimum amount of muscle exertion.
This is a sample timetable and may be subject to change. There will be one workshop a day, it may be in the morning or afternoon. There is also the option to visit local markets on Wednesday and Sunday.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the Summer is the most yang of all of the seasons, ruled by the element of fire, a time when energy is at its peak. The Summer is a time for growth, expansion, light, abundance and is the manifestation of all that we have been cultivating throughout the Spring. In TCM the fire element of Summer rules the heart, mind and spirit, so we will be giving priority to these important aspects of ourselves. During this ‘Spring into Summer’ retreat we will be cultivating our Yang energy (fire) while making sure that it doesn't come into excess, complementing and balancing with Yin yoga and meditation.
We will begin each day of the retreat with a seated meditation, followed by our dynamic asana practice. We will treat our morning practice as a moving meditation, flowing sequences of poses guided by the beautiful breath.
In contrast to the morning asana practice, we will end each day of the retreat with a Yin yoga class. Yin yoga consists of postures held for between 2-10 minutes and allows for the cultivation of a sense of calmness and deep release. Yin yoga allows you to let go of emotions that may be blocking the flow of energy.
Each of the workshops during the retreat will assist us in cultivating expansion and inner growth. Each day of the retreat will nourish and revitalize us in a different way, giving us time to look within and find joy at the most beautiful time of the year, the Summer.
In our first workshop we will move through a simple flow of asanas while blindfolded. This really allows you to turn your attention inward and heighten the other senses. During this retreat we will be looking to bring forth a state of moving meditation - uniting mind and body whenever we are on the mat. By removing our most relied upon sense, the other senses naturally heighten and we must look within. Also removing the sense of sight means that you can really tune into yourself without judgement or comparison to others.
Many people find back bending extremely challenging both physically and mentally. Back bending is a fantastic way to develop the strength and opening necessary for a balanced physical experience. On an energetic level, backbends allow for deep heart opening. In this workshop we will explore various techniques for practicing backbends effectively and safely. We will work on all aspects of back bending including lengthening the front side of the body, opening the hips and strengthening the legs and core to give stability.
This workshop will explore the use of sound and how it can be used to reconnect us to our true selves. In this workshop we will use the chanting of various sacred mantras, such as OM (I am) to allow awareness to move inwards. We will also spend time chanting the mantras linked to each of the chakras (Laam, Vaam, Raam etc). Finally we will use singing bowls with specific vibrations to balance and clear energy.
There are hundreds of mudras used in yoga and each one of them creates a different circuit of energy using the hands, fingers and thumbs. In this workshop we will explore some of the different mudras and we will look at the significance of each of the fingers in Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. We will combine the mudras with breathing meditation, turning our attention to our inhalations and exhalations and noticing the subtle effect the mudras have on our energies.
At the end of this energizing and revitalizing retreat we will experience Yin yoga in a beautiful way by working with a partner, deepening the sensations felt in the poses and learning to trust and let go. Assisted Yin is an incredibly powerful and therapeutic type of yoga and will have a deeply relaxing effect on body and mind.
