Program

Style of yoga to be taught

Morning practice will be a juicy Vinyasa flow inspired by both Ashtanga and Forrest yoga. Ashtanga brings a powerful and more traditional alignment focus to the flow. This strength is balanced by the playfulness of Forrest yoga which teaches people to listen to their body and brings freedom as you are encouraged to not be bound by the asana but to instead make it your own. There will be lots of props, laughter and nourishing assists from the yoga teacher - think neck and shoulder releases - helping people fall in love with the sensations of their own bodies.

Evening practice will be yin inspired: long, deep pose holds, mindful movement and meditations and lots of yummy poetry to help undo tension and bring peace.

Your Rustic Retreats journey

“We have calcium in our bones, iron in our veins, carbon in our souls, and nitrogen in our brains. 93 percent stardust, with souls made of flames, we are all just stars that have people names.’ -Nikita Gill

Yoga reminds us that nature is a healer. Our connection to the earth around us is something we will explore this week in our physical asana practice and as we delve deeper into yoga philosophy. We will take inspiration from the mountain energy around us, the Summer season and astrology. We will also explore the first two limbs of the eight limbs of yoga in depth, Yama and Niyama. These are ancient yoga texts that give timeless guidance for how our yoga practice informs the way we connect with and relate to the world around us.

Come and soak up the scenery and sunsets of Bagend and sync with your body’s natural rhythm. As you let go, find space to break away and wander deeper into life and all that the universe holds for you.

Workshop 1: Ahimsa, Satya & Saucha

How do we live out the yogic concepts of non-violence, truthfulness and integrity? How do we take yoga from our mats and use it as a tool for moral imagination and social healing? During this first workshop we will be exploring these questions as well as envisioning what a healed world would look like both in our own lives and the wider world stage through a variety of creative tools - music, painting, poetry, mixed media - and then offering up all our ideas and hopes for a better world back to the universe through a closing asana practice. Let’s share some love!

Workshop 2: Asteya, Santosha & Tapas

Collectively these Yamas and Niyamas are a daily call to contentment: a reminder that meaning isn’t measured by how busy you are or how much money you have but instead who we are in the deepest parts of our being. During this workshop we will spend time reflecting on where we find our own meaning and contentment, and then take our reflections out into nature for a meditative walk, asking what mother earth can teach us about our place in the world.

Workshop 3: Brahmacharya & Aparigraha

Building on the previous days exploration of where we find meaning, this workshop will explore how we share that with the world. Brahmacharya and Aparigraha ask us to think about how we can give generously and freely whilst also protecting the energy we give out. We will be using different techniques to find our dharma, thinking about what it is that we have to share with the world, and how we can spend more time doing that.

Workshop 4: Svadhyaya & Ishvara Pranidhana

These final Niyamas are about self-study, awakening to your true potential and surrendering to the universe. As the retreat draws to a close and we prepare to move back into our lives we will use journaling as a tool to help with the transition: how do we take all the goodness from the past week, bring it back into our everyday and continue growing.

Workshop 5: Yoga Nidra

End the week with an extended yoga nidra practice. Yoga nidra or yogic sleep will bring you to a deeper state of relaxation than a typical meditation practice. As you connect more deeply to your physical being, this opens space for your soul, mind and spirit to awaken. Spending time in this deep surrender leads you into a deep awareness of peace, a peace you can bring back with you to your waking life.
