The Power of Letting Go Yoga Retreat Spain

This retreat will be exploring letting go; letting go of the past and the future, letting go of attachments and expectations and allowing yourself to be fully present and mindful. Over the course of the retreat, you will deepen your meditation practice, using both seated and walking meditation techniques and learning mindfulness. You will also practice a combination of Yin and Yang yoga styles, bringing balance into your practice.

Accommodation is provided in beautifully furnished five-meter bell tents. Nestled among the lemon and orange groves, the bell tents are simple but sumptuous, with electricity and comfortable beds. Each tent can sleep up to three people. Crisp bed linen and pool towels are provided. There are hot and cold solar-powered shower facilities. Internet access is available. There is a small shop on site for all those little essentials you might need.

Rustic Retreats Spain Yoga Retreat Program

During the retreat, you will explore the four foundations of mindfulness. The four foundations are mindfulness of the body, mindfulness of feelings or sensations, mindfulness of mind or consciousness, and mindfulness of mental phenomena or objects. Through this, you will start to be able to let go of the idea that you are trying to achieve anything (such as a pose) or become someone (a yogi). You will become content with things just as they are in the present moment.

Through the meditation practice, you will use techniques to allow you to focus the mind in the present moment. You will then transfer these techniques in to every day activities, bringing you a sense of peace and calmness. You will use both seated and walking meditation techniques and the asana classes will be seen as a moving meditation. The intention of the retreat will be to spend as much time as possible in a state of mindfulness or meditation.

You will gradually increase the time spent meditating throughout the week and take time to discuss your meditation experience without become attached to either pleasant or unpleasant experiences had while mediating or practicing asana. Bagend is the perfect location to practice mindfulness and allowing ourselves to become close to nature and a realization of the notion that we are all one.

The yoga classes will be designed to emphasize the notion of letting go. Letting go of how you think an asana should look, letting go of comparing yourself to other practitioners, letting go of fear associated with particular asanas.

During the retreat, there will be Yang Vinyasa classes in the morning and more meditative Yin yoga classes in the evening. It is considered is essential to have both Yin and Yang on and off the yoga mat, in order to achieve a balance.

The Vinyasa classes will be derived from Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, a style popularized by Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. The linking of breath and movement is strongly emphasized in Ashtanga Vinyasa, allowing the practice to become a moving meditation. Poses are linked together in a flowing sequence and generally held for between three to five breaths.

The practice begins with a warm up of sun salutations and progresses into standing poses, seated poses and finally a closing sequence and final relaxation. You will explore several different creative sequences throughout the week, all with the aim of letting go.

Yin yoga is a much more slow-paced style of yoga. Poses are held for much longer periods (between two to ten minutes). Yin yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues of the body aiming to increase flexibility. The main function of Yin yoga, however, is to cultivate an inner silence and stillness. Yin yoga is a great tool to help develop a seated meditation practice.

There is one workshop a day, it may be in the morning or afternoon. There is also the option to visit local markets on Wednesday and Sunday.

Mahalia has been teaching yoga for the past two years, having completed her 200-hour Ashtanga Vinyasa course with The Yoga People. Since then, she has completed a 100-hour Yin yoga course (September 2014), and a 100-hour advanced Ashtanga Vinyasa course (September 2015). She is incredibly passionate about the many benefits of living a yogic lifestyle, physically, mentally, and spiritually. she is wholeheartedly committed to sharing this with others, and believes that yoga and meditation are for everyone, regardless of age or ability.

Retreat location

Rustic Retreats is nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Espuna Mountains, southern Spain. This beautiful site has so much to offer to so many, they have an organic vegetable garden, fresh mountain spring water, solar power throughout, a beautiful swimming pool, earthbag dome, stunning yoga platform on the side of the mountain, hammocks, orange, and lemon trees.

There is also a tailor made pinewood meditation or relaxation cabin with views across the valley, outdoor showers so you can shower under the stars, and so much more. Totally off grid, zero light pollution. Stunning surroundings, beautiful, and simple accommodation are part of the Rustic Retreats charming environment.

Stimulate all your senses while you absorb the bright colors, beautiful textures, tantalizing flavors, and sublime aromas of the fresh food served at Rustic Retreats. The chef will create a myriad of fresh, healthy vegetarian meals to tantalize your pallet, all using the ripest, freshest, seasonal ingredients that are locally produced either from their very own organic garden and vegetable patch or from the local market and farmers.

Varieties of fruit are growing freely on the site such as lemons, oranges, almonds, pomegranate, and carob to name a few. All vegetarian meals are lovingly prepared by a trained chef in the outdoor kitchen and are served "al fresco" whenever possible.

All meals are included in the price. The meals have been so popular with the guests that they are looking at producing a recipe book for next season. All day snack menu is available but cost is not included in the price. Alcohol is available at a small extra charge. Please make sure to inform Rustic Retreats of any dietary requests upon booking.

How to get there

Arrival by airplane

Please book your flight to arrive at Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC). Then it's a two-hour train journey (6 EUR) through the beautiful Spanish countryside down to Totana station where Rustic Retreats will collect you. Car hire is also available.
