Pancha Mahabhutas is Sanskrit for Five Great Elements. According to ancient yoga and ayurvedic medicine the five elements (tattwas/pancha mahabhutas) are the building blocks that compose everything in the universe including nature and the human body. We are made up of the same matter as everything else, we are one of the same matter; our individual consciousness is the universal consciousness.

Each element offers unique qualities to our experience of living. Together Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether are the basis for our connection to everything around us including our yoga practice. Working with the elements in our yoga practice gives us a deeper insight into the laws of nature and how the universe works. Wellness depends on a harmonious balance between the 5 elements and yoga can help to purify and restore or maintain that balance.

This retreat will honor our connection with everything around us by exploring the tattwas in our practice of yoga and life. Each yoga class will focus on one element and the areas/functions/organs that are connected with it and the emotional qualities that are linked to it. Specific movements that have balancing or reinforcing effects will be woven into the practice.

As part of the Five Great Elements Yoga Retreat there will be 5 workshops designed to deepen our understanding of the elements within our bodies, our minds and our souls. Below is an outline of each:

Workshop 1: Earth (Prithvi)

Home. Our base. Security. Somewhere where we always want to return. The stability and physical stillness of earth creates a sense of mental and emotional stillness. In this workshop we will focus on our root lock or the Mula Bandha where we can find grounding. Anatomy and specifics on how to engage and incorporate it into our asana practice will be covered as well as its deep connection to the Muladhara/root chakra. An opportunity to explore turning our worlds upside down through the use of inversions, demystifying upside down poses and playing with how fun it is to reverse our foundations will also be available in this workshop. In addition emphasis will be placed on grounding through our foundations (hands, feet, sit bones or head) throughout the yoga classes of the day. An increased awareness of the state and position of our foundations impacts on our stability and ease in every pose.

Workshop 2: Water (Jala)

The conductor of all elements. The binder. Soothing yet inspiring. Fluid and adaptable. In this workshop we will focus on binding in our asanas and discover our abilities to hold on and let go. Props will be used to aid each person with their bind (baddha). In addition an emphasis on softness particularly into our joints will be incorporated throughout the day’s yoga. The yoga on this day will take on a dance like quality with music to help us flow and float through our practice. As Bruce Lee said today we will “be like water”.

Workshop 3:Fire (Agni)

Discipline and dedication. Heat and energy. Our focus. This element allows us to see what is important and burn the rest away. This workshop will fire up our bandhas. Our core helps us to connect with the fire in our belly helping us to keep it alive. We will cover bandha anatomy and the sacral plexus chakra and how the home to our self-esteem and personal power relates to fire and its ability to alter the state of all other matters. The yoga of the day will be dynamic practices, creating heat from our core. We will use kapala bhati (Breath of Fire) throughout the morning class.

Workshop 4: Air (Vaayu)

Prana. Life force energy. Rhythm, lightness and grace. Our guide through asanas. The most purifying and detoxifying element. This workshop will focus on pranayama and using the breath to create, move and contain pranic energy. It will cover anatomy of our respiratory system and our subtle body. The bandhas will be re-visited as a means of controlling prana. An opportunity to learn how to ‘fly’ with arm balances will be available for those wishing to play with the beauty of air. A deeper awareness of the breath will be emphasized during the day’s yoga. You will learn how to breathe into expansion, contraction or tension to experience sensations of lightness, openness and release.

Workshop 5: Ether (akasha)

The container of everything. The mysterious and most subtle. Pure possibility and potential. Stillness and awareness. The mother of all elements. This workshop will be an introduction to achieving stillness or space of the mind (navadha). Using Patanjali’s classical yoga path to free ourselves of the chitta vritti (mind chatter). We will deepen our understanding of meditation. During the classes of the day emphasis will be placed on creating multi-directional space within each posture.

This retreat will leave you feeling balanced and rejuvenated, at ease and in touch with nature and ultimately connected to the universe around you.

My name is Anna, I am a certified Vinyasa Flow Yoga teacher and a neuro-physiotherapist. Like many others before me I discovered yoga in a gym but unlike any other gym class this stretched far beyond a physical workout; it was a magical discovery of yumminess! I left my first class in a delicious bubble of contentment, contemplating what yoga really was and how it had made me feel that way after just 90 minutes! Since then I have travelled the world, sometimes for yoga and other times to immerse myself in the wilderness. Yoga and nature in harmony have awoken me and as cheesy as it might soun

    Wonderful retreat in the mountains

CONS Cons: The retreat was too short!!!

PROS Pros: The location in the mountains is great, and yoga on the platform looking out at the scenery is awesome. We had 5 hours of yoga most days, and that included a 30 minute sunrise meditation. The immersion in yoga was fantastic and Anna gave us a varied and interesting selection of yoga practices. She included mantra and visualisation, as well as theory, which was excellent.

Disconnect and recharge in the Spanish countryside.

PROS Pros: Elliott is an experienced, fantastic host with a big heart and great sense of humor. His commitment to off-grid, sustainable living is inspiring and his food delicious. The accommodations are rustic but comfortable. I slept better in the tent than in many hotels. The outdoor shower is beautiful and an experience. Many great trees and flowers surround the property even during the dry summer months. The view of the mountain facing the property is a highlight of many parts of the day. The schedule is well-designed to give plenty of time to the yoga practice but also leave a lot of time daily to rest and relax. It was a beautiful experience to meet my fellow retreaters and simply be in nature for 6 days.

    I <3 Bagend

CONS Cons: I wouldn't change a thing - except maybe stay longer!!

PROS Pros: You have to experience Bagend to really know what an incredible place it is. Elliot is the most wondeful, open, warm, friendly and "gorgeous" host you could ever wish for. An oasis of peace amd tranquillity, an escape from the world, Bagend is a very special place. As a voga "virgin" the classes were challenging but Lara was such an encouraging teacher. The meditation was the best part for me, in just a couple of days I had headspace I haven't had in months. A truly restorative experience that I'll hold in my heart until I go back!

"First time at a yoga retreat and it was absolutely fabulous! Elliott is a caring, energetic host that makes you feel at home. Anna is a patient, great, insightful teacher - she provided a balance to her classes and workshops - I never knew how vast the world of yoga is! The location is simply inspiring as Elliot built everything himself over the years. Living off grid is also a bonus to the whole experience. We were very lucky and had great weather for early March (mid 20s during the day); one can only enjoy when the sun is out. I highly recommend this retreat if you want to relax, disconnect from the outside world, make your body feel amazing, and/or reflect about yourself." website, edited

"This retreat was my first, and certainly not my last. I only have positive things to say; about Eliot, the most delightful, kind and amazing host imaginable; the yoga, meditation and especially our instructor Katrina, all of which were mind-opening and top quality; I really felt like we were all treated as individuals and it was a group effort rather than a class. The accommodations are thoughtful, rustic and eco-conscious, though I think I would appreciate them even more in the summer weather - next time! And the surroundings are gorgeous and tranquil. The food is fantastic - as a total carnivore I was nervous about a week of vegetarianism, but honestly hardly noticed amid all the spices and variety. The schedule is well-organized, with enough free time to relax without ever being bored. In short, a week I will never forget with people who began to feel like family by the second day. A transformative experience in the perfect environment among truly beautiful souls."

The yoga teacher, Emma, was excellent, kind, and smooth. The week totally relaxed me. My body and muscles felt better and better. The group was a treat too, by the way. The place in the mountains is remote and beautiful, the lemon trees, everything. Only thing to improve is the shower and toilet but actually they are good, just not perfect.", edited

"Let me start by saying thank you for Elliot, Noemi and Autumn at Rustic Retreats. I am very new to yoga and this retreat was a great first experience. Met great people, great hosts, and had amazing food. Relaxation and activity perfectly balanced at your choice. Nothing is forced on you if you don't want to participate, but you will never be bored if you are more of the active type. Elliot is really a kind and funny person. He will make you feel welcomed all the time and he makes sure you feel good while you are there. I really liked that Bagend is secluded. It was only us, the yogis, and our hosts. They have hundreds of lemon trees to pick your lemons from. They have an amazing swimming pool! The yoga was great too. Different styles to experience which gave me deeper understanding of yoga, my own body, and generally gave me more confidence in my own practice. First time I tried meditation and chanting. All of what I learn left me asking for more. I will definitely stay on route and continue to practice and I'm planning to return!", edited

"Rustic Yoga Retreats was one of the most extraordinary experiences I've ever had. I wanted somewhere to relax, detox from "the real world," and strengthen my yoga practice. Not only did I get all of that, but I got much more. The environment that Elliot has created in Bagend is truly incomparable. He creates a small community where you're able to just be yourself. Rustic Yoga doesn't only provide yoga and a cozy place to stay, but the food is unbelievable too! For every single meal, Elliot used his creativity to cook meals that were delicious and nutritious. Rustic Yoga Retreats has become my new "happy place" and I knew from the moment I got there, I would absolutely be back again. Thank you Elliot for opening your home! ", edited

"I loved everything about Rustic Retreats. Bagend (the name of Elliot's property) is enchanting, Elliot was welcoming and hugely generous with his time and hospitality. The food was fantastic: as an omnivore I did not miss meat at all, I forgot I ate meat because the food was so varied and flavourful. The retreat is indeed rustic but tent accommodation was spacious and clean, and it was restorative to be truly off grid. The views are beautiful, day and night, and due to the lack of light pollution the stars are so clear! The small group (9 people) allows for individual attention in classes and genuine bonding between the retreatees. I loved it and was so sad to leave. I fully intend to visit again next year.", edited

"Bagend has some magical quality that makes just being, the easiest thing in the world. Elliot Walters is a wonderful host and an all-round amazing guy - wait till you try his watermelon curry. We went on a cave walk, an over-the mountain walk for Tapas and to Totana Market, led by Elliot and Stick. History, geography and interesting tales were provided by Elliot. Gotta love him. Thanks Elliot. Mel Melvin, the yoga teacher when I was there, was fantastic. No matter the level anyone was at, she was supportive, encouraging, motivating, funny and well, just lovely and very real. We had the opportunity to, improve our practice; try different styles of yoga; have in-depth discussions about interesting stuff that came up in the workshops or whenever; meditate twice daily; connect with nature and ourselves via a scavenger hunt; ohm and salsa. It was so much more than yoga. Thanks Mel.Cath and Anna, the volunteers, worked their butts off to make sure everyone was fed, watered and happy as well as fixing things, cleaning and lugging stuff up and down hills. Shelley came in twice a week to remind us that there was an outside world with cars, noise and crowds and have good chat before disappearing into the house to do outside-world, work stuff like organize retreats travel schedules and transfers. The information and timetables supplied made the journey from Alicante airport so easy and stress free. I didn't have to ask anyone for additional info when I was in transit. Thanks ladies.I slept like a baby in my tent, by the pool, in a hammock, so relaxed that I didn't even care/notice the bugs. Can't believe it. I met a amazing, diverse bunch of individuals including the people who came for the retreat. I felt spoil loved and cherished all week, with not a luxury item in sight. I left revitalized, relaxed and grounded with a handful of new friends and a renewed respect for our planet and resources.Alicante was shiny, busy and noisy on Thursday night. If you're looking for an off-grid, back to basics, soul-healing experience then I would highly recommend Rustic Retreats. I am definitely going back", edited

Rustic retreat is a really rustic magic place for those who will experience nature, mountains, homemade fresh Eco vegetarian food and hold a body and mind detox. Elliott, the retreat owner, makes everyone feel welcome and home there, fresh and homey tents become a beautiful cosy nest in the evening when sun goes down. "Elliots kindness, generosity and hospitality was so inspirational, and his passion for Bagend shone throughout everything. Javis fantastic food was so delicious, a real treat. I think Karin was absolutely fantastic and her classes were very special. I loved the mix of yoga, activities, meditation and free time a perfect balance. I also thought the walk to the Alido was really nice, and learning about Earthbag building. The last night was amazing! Overall, this was without doubt one of the best experiences I have ever had. Everything was magical. It is very rare to find somewhere so beautiful and with such a positive energy about it, driven with complete passion and kindness. I will never forget this week.", edited

"I had a wonderful time, the opportunity to learn to relax and do nothing during the day has been magical and the way the yoga has made my body feel has been amazing. The food was always beautiful, fresh, healthy and lots of it and the tents were snug and cosy. Elliot is amazing, to open his home up time and time again to strangers is a truly magical quality and he does it so genuinely, I felt so welcome and at home, thank-you."

"This was easily the best week of my life in 2015, and I went back a few months later! The host, Elliott, is a complete diamond, and the yoga instructors I had were wonderful. The food is just divine, so fresh, bought from local markets, and plentiful; my bowels were so healthy and if we wanted a little drink then, it was not frowned upon.Everything here is choice, if you need to sleep in and miss a session at 7 a.m. its fine; if you want to use the amazing platform when the taught sessions are not on, then you are free to do so. The pool was bliss, with a panoramic view of mountains upon mountains. You are in a secluded location, and it feels so good! There is a gorgeous walk to the local village which is well worth it for a bit of Spanish flare. I love the off grid approach, and it makes you think about your water and electricity consumption. Living in a yogic way is the approach here. I whole heartedly recommend a retreat here to everyone."

"Rustic Retreat yoga was everything and much more I could wish for. Elliot is a superb host who serves delicious vegetarian food and is charismatic, friendly, and very funny. The yoga practice was great, and even more special because of the remote location, and stunning mountain views. The pool offers a welcome reprieve from the hot sun, and a perfect place to read, chat, and generally replenish the body. I'll be going back for sure."

"This was a great retreat for total wind down from the everyday grind. I can honestly say I did not want to leave. I am planning on returning next year. Elliot, the owner, is a fabulous chef, and the meals were plentiful, and always very tasty.Becky, the yoga teacher, was very knowledgeable about all forms of yoga, and meditation. I learnt so much from her. Each day was different which was great for my short attention span.Added bonuses were the house cats, the fabulous pool, numerous fruit trees (I needed a lemon for my tea, and just went, and pluck one from the nearest tree), and the stars at night. I even got to see shooting stars!Thank you Elliot, Becky and the marmadukes for a truly memorable week."

"My sister recommended Rustic Retreats after she spent a week there on a yoga holiday. She raved about it so much that I decided to give it a try, and spent a week there with two friends in August 2015. I don't think I've ever been as relaxed as I was on this holiday! From the wonderful warm welcome, and relaxing environment (pool, hammocks, and ample lounging areas) to the delicious food, this place is something really special. The quality of the yoga teaching was excellent, and the hospitality that Elliot, and his team provide is second to none. I hope this becomes an annual visit for me, and I would whole heartedly recommend it."

"What a magnificent little corner of paradise hidden in the valley, surrounded by lemon and orange trees. We had an amazing time there, meditation in the morning, followed by yoga practice on pretty much top of the mountain. It couldnt have been better: surrounded only by nature and silence. A perfect spot to reenergize! Must mention the delicious food: all local, veggie, and organic! I would recommend it to everyone who is a bit of nature, yoga, off grid person. Thank you again for this experience Elliot, you have created an amazing place there, which I will come back to one day."

"Rustic Retreats was my first yoga retreat, and it was just the best experience ever. I'm 22, and had practiced yoga for a year before the retreat. In our retreat, all levels were present, but that was not a problem at all since the teacher adapted the yoga classes. We also had great workshops and meditation sessions, which were all adapted to the group. The remote location and the small group is part of the wonderful experience; you can enjoy the quietness of the Spanish mountains; enjoy other's company at the pool or at the dinner table where the best yoga food I've ever tasted was served. I'm a vegan, which was not a problem at all, Elliot is very keen to make sure that you really enjoy your stay.Go to this magical retreat, you won't regret it!"

"I cant really put into words the value of the special week that my friend and I had at Rustic Retreats in August 2014. Life is simple there, but very comfortable, and as a foodie I was so pleased to be so well fed. The tents are remarkably conformable, and the yoga platform is stunning. It took me several days to come back down to earth after my week in there, and I cant wait to go back in 2015."
