Pancha Mahabhutas is Sanskrit for Five Great Elements. According to ancient yoga and ayurvedic medicine the five elements (tattwas/pancha mahabhutas) are the building blocks that compose everything in the universe including nature and the human body. We are made up of the same matter as everything else, we are one of the same matter; our individual consciousness is the universal consciousness.
Each element offers unique qualities to our experience of living. Together Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether are the basis for our connection to everything around us including our yoga practice. Working with the elements in our yoga practice gives us a deeper insight into the laws of nature and how the universe works. Wellness depends on a harmonious balance between the 5 elements and yoga can help to purify and restore or maintain that balance.
This retreat will honor our connection with everything around us by exploring the tattwas in our practice of yoga and life. Each yoga class will focus on one element and the areas/functions/organs that are connected with it and the emotional qualities that are linked to it. Specific movements that have balancing or reinforcing effects will be woven into the practice.
As part of the Five Great Elements Yoga Retreat there will be 5 workshops designed to deepen our understanding of the elements within our bodies, our minds and our souls. Below is an outline of each:
Home. Our base. Security. Somewhere where we always want to return. The stability and physical stillness of earth creates a sense of mental and emotional stillness. In this workshop we will focus on our root lock or the Mula Bandha where we can find grounding. Anatomy and specifics on how to engage and incorporate it into our asana practice will be covered as well as its deep connection to the Muladhara/root chakra. An opportunity to explore turning our worlds upside down through the use of inversions, demystifying upside down poses and playing with how fun it is to reverse our foundations will also be available in this workshop. In addition emphasis will be placed on grounding through our foundations (hands, feet, sit bones or head) throughout the yoga classes of the day. An increased awareness of the state and position of our foundations impacts on our stability and ease in every pose.
The conductor of all elements. The binder. Soothing yet inspiring. Fluid and adaptable. In this workshop we will focus on binding in our asanas and discover our abilities to hold on and let go. Props will be used to aid each person with their bind (baddha). In addition an emphasis on softness particularly into our joints will be incorporated throughout the day’s yoga. The yoga on this day will take on a dance like quality with music to help us flow and float through our practice. As Bruce Lee said today we will “be like water”.
Discipline and dedication. Heat and energy. Our focus. This element allows us to see what is important and burn the rest away. This workshop will fire up our bandhas. Our core helps us to connect with the fire in our belly helping us to keep it alive. We will cover bandha anatomy and the sacral plexus chakra and how the home to our self-esteem and personal power relates to fire and its ability to alter the state of all other matters. The yoga of the day will be dynamic practices, creating heat from our core. We will use kapala bhati (Breath of Fire) throughout the morning class.
Prana. Life force energy. Rhythm, lightness and grace. Our guide through asanas. The most purifying and detoxifying element. This workshop will focus on pranayama and using the breath to create, move and contain pranic energy. It will cover anatomy of our respiratory system and our subtle body. The bandhas will be re-visited as a means of controlling prana. An opportunity to learn how to ‘fly’ with arm balances will be available for those wishing to play with the beauty of air. A deeper awareness of the breath will be emphasized during the day’s yoga. You will learn how to breathe into expansion, contraction or tension to experience sensations of lightness, openness and release.
The container of everything. The mysterious and most subtle. Pure possibility and potential. Stillness and awareness. The mother of all elements. This workshop will be an introduction to achieving stillness or space of the mind (navadha). Using Patanjali’s classical yoga path to free ourselves of the chitta vritti (mind chatter). We will deepen our understanding of meditation. During the classes of the day emphasis will be placed on creating multi-directional space within each posture.
This retreat will leave you feeling balanced and rejuvenated, at ease and in touch with nature and ultimately connected to the universe around you.
Times will vary slightly on each retreat. There is one workshop a day, it may be in the morning or afternoon. There is also the option to visit local markets on Wednesday and Sunday.
My name is Anna, I am a certified Vinyasa Flow Yoga teacher and a neuro-physiotherapist. Like many others before me I discovered yoga in a gym but unlike any other gym class this stretched far beyond a physical workout; it was a magical discovery of yumminess! I left my first class in a delicious bubble of contentment, contemplating what yoga really was and how it had made me feel that way after just 90 minutes! Since then I have travelled the world, sometimes for yoga and other times to immerse myself in the wilderness. Yoga and nature in harmony have awoken me and as cheesy as it might soun
