Inspired by Natalie Goldberg’s legendary True Secret retreats, you’ll be guided through a series of meditation and writing workshops, releasing any old barriers to living or writing, fully. There is no need to have ever written anything beforehand; the focus here is on the practice of moving the hand across the page, not the creation of a story or poem, although that may be what comes out.
The yoga and meditation shala is set in two acres of luscious garden with a river running through. Meditation spaces are dotted throughout the land with the highlight feature being the handmade bamboo chill-out area which is perfect for quiet reflection next to bamboo trees and a lush tropical pond.
Throughout the gardens, there are hammocks, swinging chairs, poolside tables, and plenty of shady trees. You’ll find the magic of Riverheart hard to resist. Furthermore, there are three wooden cabanas, a bell tent, and a geodesic dome. Riverheart Retreats is an outdoor nature lover's paradise and as such, they have bugs, trees, and a few mosquitoes too. They also have a wonderful dog named Magic, a rescue cat, and 5 kittens.
Cabana 1 is a cozy wooden cabana in the Riverheart gardens with ensuite shower room and toilet in which all hand-painted with mandala designs and a river stone floor in the shower. Mosquito screen, fan, and plenty of blankets for the cooler months are available.
Cabana 2 is a gorgeous wooden cabana with a terrace, overlooking the Riverheart gardens. There are an ensuite shower room and toilet creatively decorated with paint and jewelry. A small bookcase with a good range of novels and non-fiction as well as a fan and plenty of blankets for the cooler months are available.
Cabana 3 is a gorgeous wooden cabana with two single beds in, looking out onto a mosaic piazza area. The shower room and toilet are a short walk up the garden or enjoy the outdoor shower and bathtub.
Glamp in style in this beautiful bell tent with space for four people in two single mattresses and a double bed. Fairy lights and a fan is available. It is also a short walk from the shower room and toilet.
A handmade wooden structure for two people, lined with a hand-stitched kaleidoscope of colorful material. The closest accommodation to the river, and a short walk from the shower room and toilet.
This experimental and beautiful retreat uses ideas drawn from the rivers surrounding you on your retreat to help you discover your origin, path, and expression to the world around you. To aid this process of discovery, you’ll work with periods of silence to store your creative energy and learn how to nurture your inner voice.
The writer’s studio is set in two acres of luscious garden, with a river running through. Meditation spaces are dotted through the garden and with hammocks, swinging chairs, poolside tables, and plenty of shady trees you’ll take the craft of writing back out into the wild.
Your writing tutor is a published author, editor, and experienced mentor with a passion for supporting other writers to develop their confidence and practice. Over this retreat, she’ll help you break through old blockages, taking home a wealth of new ideas and practices to work with. Regarding the writing session, the focus is not on the creation of a story or poem although that may be what comes out.
You are welcome to arrive from 14:00 onwards on day 1 and make use of the swimming pool and luscious gardens before you first come together as a group for your evening sessions which are a welcome circle, group meditation, and a sumptuous dinner. The retreat finishes after your morning session and breakfast on day 7, allowing you plenty of time to travel back home feeling refreshed, smiling, and with a new love of writing.
On some retreats, Riverheart has Karma Yoga places available for guests wanting to offer a few hours of their time each day in return for a reduced fee. Roles typically include social media and blog writing, but please inquire for full details of what’s available.
You can enjoy two excursions, one to the nearby forest for a beautiful sensory walk in nature and one to a local whitewashed village where you can find plenty of writing inspiration.
Samm Short is one of Riverheart's creators and owners and also a fellow painter and long-time student of Ian's. Fearless love and courageous expression are the two guiding principles that she tries to work from each day and that Riverheart has been founded on. For her, the practices of writing, painting, yoga, and meditation all seek to discover and express the same truth that love and joy are at the root of all things.
Mike Helmle is the resident meditation instructor at Riverheart Retreats, sharing his passion and knowledge about the practice of meditation by leading our nine-day Vipassana retreats. Together with his wife, Samm Helmle, Mike co-founded the Riverheart Retreats center in 2017 in order to create a space for people to come and develop their spiritual practice; a space where people could find the peace needed to ground themselves and listen to their inner voice. A previous graphic designer, Mike spent seven years studying and practicing meditation in Thailand and Peru before moving to Spain.
