Develop your human potential and build your character with an integrated yoga and Kalaripayattu training conducted by Rishikul Yogshala in the God’s own country of coastal Kerala. In this course, along with an in-depth exploration into Hatha and Ashtanga principles, you will also have the opportunity to cultivate unique skills in Kalaripayattu, the foundational martial art form of the world.
Live in the harmonious rhythm of nature decked in enriching beauty and elegance. The accommodation facility is a conscious design of earthen beauty, solace, and ecology. Dwell in the bamboo huts in the midst of fresh verdure and palm trees to experience a village-like purist lifestyle with all the basic contemporary facilities at disposal. The dwellings bring in balance, harmony, and healing energies to all those who come to live here. The eco-mud abode has spacious and well-lit rooms with private washrooms, and open, front-facing seating areas. Enclosed in pristine beauty and built according to the Vasthu Shastra, the foundation of traditional Indian science and architecture, the venue is crafted to perfection with touches of innovation and natural magnificence.
Kalaripayattu is a dynamic art of combat, a well selected discipline to be learnt and practiced in complementation to your yoga training. Prompt and particular reflex actions in Kalaripayattu shares the same core idea and driving force that of yoga, a heightened state of awareness. The best of traditional masters in the birth land of this art will train you to perfection, touching upon unarmed combat, weapon usage, and development of presence of mind in combat.
By undertaking training in Kalaripayattu, achieve great skills of defense against odds that block your way to the ultimate spiritual goal. This ancient martial art form originated in India in the golden age of Vedic wisdom. This art is attributed to the legendary Agastya Muni, the sage who symbolized the ethic of good over evil on earth.
Keeping in tune with the other Vedic discipline of ancient India, the most illustrious of which is yoga, Kalaripayattu is a holistic approach. Going beyond mere physical discipline, Kalari addresses the whole of the body-mind-soul complex. Understanding the energy system is one of the primary aspects of Kalari. Through meticulous exploration into the potentials of your body, you are likely to discover sources of energy in yourself you never knew existed.
Inspired by the animal world, the ancient Kalaripayattu teachers codified eight types of vadivus of defensive combat postures. These wild attitudes will bring alive unparalleled primal instincts in you at your own behest, Varah, the wild boar, Gaja, the elephant, Simham, the lion, Sarpam, the snake, Kukkuda the cock, Mayura, the peacock, and Haya, the horse.
In this discipline, a greatly detailed and codified set of body toning exercises are followed. To master a great degree of agility and for cultivating a sharpened reflex, these exercises are essential. The trainers will present lucidly choreographed exercise sequences to guide the practitioners in seamless application of the body as a tool of self-defense. The major aspects of the toning exercise are acrobatic stances, using the body to block attacks, dodging postures, and breath control.
Learn how to get the upper hand in face to face combat just by strategic movement. The human body can be the greatest weapon.
This is introduced at an advanced stage of the training. In combat with weaponry, a greater level of coordination and understanding of the body mechanics is needed. The instructors will emphasize on intensified learning in which the weapon has to be understood as an extension of the body. Kalari armaments include an array of tools, from simple spear to shield, machete, and lasso.
Training in armed combat at the Gurukul also involves a moral-ethical education. The core ethic of yoga and Kalari is to fight for the good against the evil. Misuse of power is considered sin. Fighting with the trademark Kalaripayattu article, the six feet long sword, or the urumi, is the highlight of this segment.
According to Ayurveda and Kalari, there are many vital nodal points in the body known as Marmas. Hitting on the Marma is the key to successful unarmed combat. The ancient masters of this art of combat had a thorough understanding of the human body, the centers of its strength and weaknesses. Only by touching upon certain centers with the special Kalari technique, it is possible to stimulate one’s body and being from the core.
Meanwhile, Chikitsha refers to healing. According to Kalari, harnessing and properly channelizing prana or vital force in the body brings about healing. Experience these miraculous techniques with Kalari Chikitsha or treatment and Kalari massage. Aspects to understand are the tricks to bring down your opponent with just a slight turn of the hand, how to relieve yourself of sprains and accidental injuries, how to improve mental awareness, and Kalari medication, with oils, creams, and gels of Ayurvedic origin.
Kalari is related at the roots with performance forms like the Indian dance kootiyattam. Also, the language and culture of the Keralite people are replete with Kalari jargon. Learning Kalari involves knowing about the folklore of Kerala which is woven around legendary Kalari warriors.
A lesson in Kalari is packed with multiple benefits for the body and mind. Develop strong awareness and a body which ready to face any given challenge.
Some of the prime benefits in a nutshell are enhancing flexibility, developing mindfulness, sharpening reflexes, building strategizing power, and developing readiness for challenges
With an introduction to yoga of the Hatha and Ashtanga style, this course will strengthen you physically. In addition to primary asanas, there will be guided classes on pranayama or breathing exercise, mantra chanting and meditation techniques, and yoga philosophy.
By improving your focus and flexibility with yogic exercise under the guidance of traditional Indian teachers, in complementation to intensive Kalaripayattu training, this course can effectively prepare you for a distinguished career in yoga teaching as well.
Yoga and Kalari lessons are offered in combination at Rishikul Yogshala to deepen the understanding of the Vedic idea of wholeness. Just as yoga addresses the entire body-mind-soul complex in order to improve one’s life and living, Kalari emphasizes on unrelenting presence of mind and quick body reflexes. In yogic discipline, meditation is centered on rhythmic mantra chanting, while Kalaripayattu enhances mind’s awareness by rhythmically oriented combative movements.
Additionally, in the same fashion that yogasana explores un-channelized energies of the body, Kalari movements too brings out the body’s unexplored potentials. Yoga asks you to look inside for freedom, Kalari movements too are oriented selfwards. Through the act of active defense against the opposition, Kalari is a constant strife to discover the self in its true glory in the face of challenges.
