"A fantastic cultural experience"

This was a hiking trip in the Himalayan foothills, with a yoga class each morning and meditation each evening. Our instructor and guide was Vikas, and he did a really wonderful job. Sadly, I injured my hip two days before the trekking began. Vikas rearranged the trip so that it was still in the same region, but more oriented around cultural activities. We were still able to do some trekking, just not as much as intended. Similarly, we adapted the yoga to what I was able to do. The hiking we did was great. We walked up through flowering rhododendrons to Deoriatal, a mountain lake, and camped in permanent tents at the top. The food up there was basic, as you would expect in the mountains, but nice. There are plenty of excellent camping sites in the area. The night before, we stayed at a beautiful home stay in Sari (called “Himalayan Homestay”), where the family cooked for us. We stayed there again later in the trip, and their children showed us around the village, which was delightful. On other days we visited some very significant spiritual sites. A highlight for me was a very small and intimate Ganga Aarti ceremony in Rudraprayag, right at the junction of two holy rivers that lead into the Ganges. It was an amazing moment as we sang and moved with the fires, and our ringing bells echoed along the valley. We meditated there after the Ganga Aarti. As lightning flashed and thunder roared I felt very in touch with nature.
