Kriya yoga and its importance

Kriya yoga is a meditation technique based on pranic energy (life force) and chakras (energy centers in the central nervous system), beginning with the breath. This is a technique of self-realization. Kriya yoga is one of the most powerful methods of meditation and the awakening of spiritual consciousness in man. This is to know the life force that controls your physical, subtle, and causal bodies. This is to have mastery over your mind.

In addition to these, it develops concentration, sharpens the intellect, increases discriminating ability, increases work potential leading to success in business and job, and hence increases material prosperity. This also brings harmony in the family and social life, removes ill effects of planets on your life, reduces worries and stress, removes psychosomatic ailments, and increases life span.

Everyone tries to live a happy life with peace and bliss, and for that, with all your efforts to achieve prosperity, development, happiness, and peace, you end up in misery and are ever unsatisfied. You are unhappy either due to poverty, physical illness, or mental stress and are forced to look into society with negative characteristics. Even in societies where exists material saturation, the members of the societies are not satisfied.

Even with all the perfections in science and technology and with the exaltations in philosophical knowledge, you fail to satisfy your inner need because you do not have mastery of your life. You need to have mastery over your mind. You need to sublimate your ego by the practice of meditation with proper devotion. You need to overcome your cravings and aversions.

In the present-day world, you all have become slaves to your mind. Whatever you do, you do simply because of being swayed away by your emotions, influenced by your thoughts and desires, or being attracted by allurements. You do not follow your discriminating intellect. But this should not be like this. You have to be the master of your mind.

If you go according to the wrong ideas of your mind, you will commit mistakes. Since all your activities are first done in the mind and then are expressed as speech or actions, you have to clear your mind so that you are not cheated. You can do this by practicing Kriya yoga and meditation.

The Sanskrit word “yoga” comes from the root “yuj” which means "union" and "samadhi." This is the union of the individual self with the cosmic self (God). Kriya yoga is the practice part of the yoga. This is a method to attain the union with the self in each inhalation and exhalation. Since the practice is based on breath, everybody can practice this.

In this technique, one concentrates at chakras or energy centers in the brain and in the spinal cord. Your mind is in constant motion, and this is reflected by your breath. When you are angry, afraid, and greedy or have a sexual urge, your breath is agitated. When the breath is calm, the mind is also calm.

You learn to calm your breath to calm your mind through Kriya yoga. In this way, after a long and uninterrupted practice, you gain control over your mind and attain the state of samadhi.

Kriya yoga is a union of wise combinations of bandhas, mudras, pranayama, asanas, and awareness. The teaching and learning of Kriya yoga are done gradually. A beginner starts with the first Kriya. Then she or he proceeds into the second Kriya, and so on. In the first Kriya, she or he learns the techniques, namely, Nabhi Kriya, Khechari Mudra, Guru Pranam, Om technique, Hamsa Sadhana, Mahamudra, Kriya-1, Paravastha, Jyoti Mudra, Sambhavi Mudra, and more.

The teachings of Kriya yoga are found in Vedas, Upanishads, yoga sutras, and Bhagavad-Gita. In the course of time, the practical aspect of this ancient knowledge was forgotten. In the 19th century, this was again made popular by Yogiraj Shri Shyamacharana Lahiri when he learned it from a Himalayan yogi known as Mahavatara Babaji. Lahiri Mahasaya obtained the highest knowledge by the practice of this Kriya yoga.

One of his best disciples was a great yogi, Swami Shriyukteswara Giri Maharaj, whose world-famous disciple and author of the book, Autobiography of a yogi, Paramahamsa Yogananda, had an important role in spreading Kriya yoga in the Western countries at the beginning of the 20th century.

The transmission of this teaching has been continuing in India. Pujya Swami Nityananda Giri Maharaj is a Kriya yoga master who has learned these techniques from his master Swami Shankarananda Giri Maharaj who in turn had learned it from Prabhujee Swami Narayana Giri. Prabhujee was a disciple of Swami Shriyukteswara Giri Maharaj.

You can take share rickshaws (vehicle brand name Vikram) towards Lakshman Jhula for 15 INR from Rishikesh station.
