This retreat is an extraordinary opportunity to experience a place that is endearing in its innocence and pristine beauty. Even the most experienced traveler will be touched by the 15th century churches, quaint villages, lava rock walls, the geo-thermal activity, the verdant fields, the colorful hydrangeas and azaleas, and a community of people who are truly happy to share their lovely islands and culture.
Accommodation is based on single or double occupancy.
Your journey to the Azores will include many unique experiences and opportunities to connect with the people and the culture of these islands. Each day of the retreat will begin with a yoga, Pilates or core strengthening session to energize you for the adventures ahead. The rest of your day will be filled with active exploration like hiking, biking, and rappelling, all designed to give you full access to the unforgettable vistas on the islands.
Each day will also include “downtime” for personal reflection, relaxation by the pool, or a rejuvenating massage.
This retreat will include a tour though a UNESCO Heritage site, biking to vineyards, a private lunch and wine tasting.
The first stop will be Pico, the Mountain island. Pico is dominated by it’s dormant volcano, Mount Pico. At 7,713 ft above sea level, Mount Pico is the highest point in Portugal. While a climb to the top isn’t part of this retreat, a day hike can be arranged for those seeking a challenging climb and the rewards of a spectacular view at the summit.
Pico island is a sublime mixture of lava rock and exotic vegetation. The shores are criss-crossed by vineyards planted in black lava fields, a unique vineyard culture that has UNESCO World Heritage status. The feeling on Pico is one of peace, serenity and calm–a step back to a simpler time.
Our active adventures on Pico will include private, guided hiking treks, a rappelling experience, and a guided biking trek through the UNESCO protected vineyards.
Your second day trip from Pico will be to the lovely island of Faial, noted for its picturesque harbor adorned with white washed houses. We will enjoy lunch overlooking the colorful yachts that make Faial their port of call when crossing the Atlantic. You will spend the day hiking through lush green fields and paths lined with luxurious flowers like hydrangeas, azaleas and ginger lilies. Our hike will include a visit to see the deep crater of Capelinos Volcano, which last erupted in 1957.
The spectacular caldeira is surrounded by cedars, junipers, beeches, fern and moss, which are significant specimens of the primitive vegetation of this Azorean island.
Escape to a destination that you might have to look up in an atlas: The Azores, Portugal. This group of nine islands, all volcanic in origin, is located 4.5 hours from the east coast of the United States, in the middle of the wide-open Atlantic.
