Adi Carter

Adi is founder and co-teacher for Redefining Yoga. She has been a lifelong student of practicing yoga off the mat in all shapes and forms, especially when it involves being outdoors. Her passion for movement and the environment has taken her on countless adventures around the world and she currently travels and teaches as part of the YogaSlackers and co-ordinates the Redefining Balance retreats to share the modalities of shifting perspective through yoga, slacklining, AcroYoga, climbing, surfing, mountain biking, and just about anything else you can think to do on the earth’s terrain.

Traveling and teaching, often times with her car as a home base, you can find her somewhere in the vicinity of an ocean, climb site, mountain, or legit climbing tree as she works with students on and off the mat to discover a new sense of balance, strength, and focus in whatever their form of practice might be.

Adi’s adventures and environmental awareness endeavors have been featured in The New York Times, Yoga Journal, Outdoor Japan, New York Magazine, National Geographic, L.A. Yoga, Yoga + Joyful Living, Urban Climber, elephant journal, Current TV, and TIME for CNN.

Heidi Wirtz

Heidi is a teacher at Redefining Yoga, a North Face athlete, a nature lover, inspirational speaker, philanthropist, and adventure guide. She's a climber, yogi, and philanthropist at heart, and holds a deep love of connecting with nature, sharing her passions, and inspiring others to follow their dreams.

She is one of the country’s few prominent female adventure climbers. She has been climbing for over twenty years, letting her passion for adventure and exploration lead her to exotic and remote places around the world. Heidi has pioneered new routes up unclimbed big walls and mountains, and pushed the limits of female exploration. She is known in the United States as Heidi Almighty for her bold and technical climbing as well as speed ascents in Yosemite Valley.

Also known for her philanthropic work and her passion for giving back, Heidi is co-founder of Girls Education International, an organization that provides educational opportunities to undeserved girls in remote and undeveloped regions of the world. She also co-founded Earth Play Retreats, through which she is dedicated to offering her clients a transformational experience that will carry over into her students’ everyday lives.

Heidi has studied yoga for 20 over years, has completed two teacher-training courses (one with David Swenson and the other with Jeanie Manchester), and has had the privilege of studying with many amazing teachers including Tim Miller, Pattabi Jois, Douglas Brookes, and Noah Maze. Heidi applies her knowledge of yoga and connection to nature to create classes that are uplifting, energetic and focused on aligning the body for maximum fluidity in all of life.

"I believe people find Redefining Balance for a reason. Redefining Balance came into my life at a time of inner crisis. I had been living my life in accordance with the expectations of others, but where I really wanted to be was strapped to the side of a rock overlooking the sunset, or hands gliding through the water paddling to match the harmony of an approaching wave. It was the first time I had ever stepped out of my comfort zone, and it is at that point where we truly test ourselves, at our edge. Already having a meditation practice I could find peace in a silent room but can we find peace at the edge of our comfort zone? Redefining Balance builds the tools to find inner balance, when we are internally balanced nothing can shake us up. If we can find peace at the top of a rock face, riding a wave, balancing on a slackline, or upside-down we can certainly find it right side up. Adi Carter and Kadri Kurgan are the most genuine teachers I have experienced in all my travels, they are real. They care about spreading their teachings and are consistent with these teachings on and off the mat. In the form of silent revolution people like Adi and Kadri are changing the world. Redefining balance is more than just a community, it is universal and unconditional love for all beings and this planet."

  • Review by Anna Lei from Boston, Massachusetts

"Going on the 2014 Redefining Balance retreat was the one of the best and most spontaneous trips of my life. I was an office nurse, working the nine-to-five job in Boston, and needed something refreshing in my life. Ive never surfed, climbed, slack-lined, or even heard of Acroyoga. I was essentially the novice of the group and I was probably one of the few people ever who googled yoga retreat and ended up on this trip. To make matters even more uncertain for myself before the trip, my friend cancelled on me last minute, but I was eager and took the leap anyway and I couldnt be more grateful. Any hesitancy I had quickly turned around because every single person on this trip was so welcoming and cool. Everything about this trip was challenging for me personally, but in the most positive and eye-opening way. I came home with a deeper meaning for yoga, balance, and movement. I find myself 100 times more ambitious and confident in my body, constantly looking for ways to explore my limits (or lack of) in the physical world. As a person who wanted to be more active and didnt know where to start, Im raving about this experience to everyone, and trying to get all of my best friends into yoga and Acroyoga and climbing! Inspirational is the word to describe this trip. A million thanks Adi and Kadri!"

  • Review by Fouad Kiamilev Ph.D from Delaware

"I am a professor of computer engineering at the University of Delaware and I also play leadership part in two high-tech startup businesses: one to improve electric vehicles and another to make civilian and military airplanes safer to fly. I absolutely loved being part of the redefining balance 2013 retreat because it allowed me to learn new things and to meet and play with interesting people. I came to the retreat because of Acro yoga but discovered other sports like surfing, slack, lining and outdoor climbing. I have been to three yoga-centered retreats before and what makes this one different is the variety of sports that they practice. Also what makes Redefining Balance different is the social dynamic created by Adi, Kadri and other participants. I felt that there was much more play, love, and communication shared between participants as compared to other retreats I have been on. Kadri and Adi are amazing individuals and leaders. I will never forget sharing conversation and company with Kadri on a three hour drive to San Juan that redefined my outlook on life. That conversation alone was worth the trip!"

  • Review by Kathleen Mumma from New Jersey

"My first visit to Puerto Rico was in 2012 for the Redefining Balance retreat. It was my first exposure to climbing, slacklining, and Acro yoga, and also my first glimpse into a collective of people so tightly woven together by their love of yoga, surfing, climbing and reverence for Mother Nature. I met many wonderful friends and left la Isla del Encanto feeling renewed and inspired. So inspired, that at the end of 2012 I moved to Rincon to pursue a life redefined by these passions! It has been a privilege to continue participating in these amazing, life altering retreats!"

  • Review by Per Jonsson from Sweden

"This retreat is the perfect balance between stillness and movement, yin and yang, being and doing. Adi and Kadri hold a safe space where every individual feels welcome and is able to open up, play, and discover with the supportive energy of their peers. It is truly a remarkable experience and you will see me there again next year for sure."
