CONS There aren't any grocery stores in the village so if you want to cook your own meals or buy bottled water/drinks, stop off at a supermarket on the way (Alcampo near the airport). The restaurant/hotel opposite did shut on Monday and Tuesday night (I get the feeling they close if they have no bookings) so having a car or some food in the house is good as a backup plan. There's also a really swish restaurant at the top of the village if needed.
PROS Had a fantastic week at Rectoria, a beautiful old stone house in the stunning Tramuntana mountain range. I loved the location, nestled in a tiny Majorcan village, tucked down a side street, at the top of which is a restaurant (which served fantastic ice cream to cool you down in the afternoon or freshly squeezed orange juice and cake). It was very peaceful and completely silent at night. I found the beds comfy and enjoyed the minimalist style of the house, with multiple bathrooms (really powerful showers) and a well equipped kitchen (lots of pots, pans, sharp knives nice hob, oven, fridge, freezer etc). We cooked quite a few of our own meals here. The yoga and pilates were brilliant. We took classes out on the decking in the garden, to the sound of bird song. Salva is a fantastic instructor, very patient, encouraging and warm, with such attention to detail. I'd been taking classes and been on 3 yoga retreats previously and had never realised my alignment was wrong on some of the main asanas and the subtle correction made a lot of sense and definitely felt like I had become more flexible by the end of the week. I enjoyed the Ashtanga style and Salva was great at adapting it, to suit our pace. The hiking was definitely a highlight for me, especially the hike up the mountain to Castell d'Alharo. We had stunning views and enjoyed lunch in a lovely mountain cafe. Very rustic, with bread, ham, olives and wine. Or without the bread if you're gluten intolerant like me (I brought along some gluten free oat biscuits and snacks just to substitute the carbs)! I left feeling refreshed. It was a very positive experience. Salva and his wife are lovely people. So warm, friendly and helpful as we had many questions about traveling around the island. They don't live on site, but gave us their mobile numbers so we could text or call if needed. The breakfast supplies were lovely too :) Lots of fresh fruit, eggs and tasty snacks. Overall a fantastic experience and a refreshing change from the more resorty yoga retreats out there. This one really is off the beaten track (hire a car to go and explore or get to a local grocery store [a few in the nearby town of Alaro]).
"The entire trip was an amazing experience from start, as the organising family arranged for a convenient pick up and drop off to the beautiful retreat worthy of staying at in the winter just as well. The warm welcome and amazing spirit of my trainer and point of communication was a complete delight.. with great support and guidance through everything and the amazing atmosphere this was the ultimate break from the city and a fast pace lifestyle. I would recommend this trip any day as everyone needs a good break at some point while maintaining a healthy routine that includes indoor and outdoor adventures. "
